Lady Vol recovering from brain surgery
By TERRY KINNEY Associated Press Writer
*** begin quote ***
CINCINNATI(AP)—Amber Gray walks with a limp. Her left eyelid
droops almost shut, the lingering effect of a stroke. Her left arm is
in a sling.
*** and ***
It wasn’t until after the 6-foot-1 forward had shoulder surgery
in July that doctors found a brain aneurysm, later repaired in a 12
1/2-hour procedure that may have saved her life.
“I think I took life, in general, for granted,” said Gray,
19. “You don’t know what it (a life-threatening situation)
is like until you go through it. I’m a lot stronger mentally,
which is where I struggled last year.”
*** and ***
Goddard said Gray had successful rotator cuff surgery on July 2 in
Knoxville, and the aneurysm was unrelated. But within hours of that
surgery, Gray’s lungs filled with fluid and doctors performed
more tests as her mother prayed.
“We went from celebrating to not knowing if my daughter would ever wake up again,” said her mother, Tonya Carter.
It was days before the broken blood vessel that caused the stroke
showed up. Meanwhile, Gray had been transferred to University Hospital
in Cincinnati for neurosurgery, and then to the rehabilitation center
on July 23.
Goddard called Gray’s progress “meteoric,” and said it’s been inspirational to other patients.
*** end quote ***
[JR: Nineteen years old with a stroke. That’s for us old folks to
deal with. I’d have probably said a few bad words. Never mind
being inspirational. I read this and thought not every positive has to
come from a Jasper. We have to recognize that other schools
occasionally have heros and heroines. We too should remember Amber in
our prayers. And be always aware of the fragile thread of life that
binds us together. And, give thanks for all the talented people who
will make this turn out OK.]

JEmail: Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957) reacts to “railroad cars”
Dear John,
I just finished reading your closing remarks on the “culture of
death” embedded in Obamacare. And your closing statement
“When do we stand up for our beliefs? When they are loading us up
into the railroad cars?”
Don’t bother wondering what is happening in this country. The
left has squelched prayer in school but promotes all kind of “sex
education’ of our children (____ has two Mommys), distribution of
condoms, etc. We are abandoning the teaching of the Bible and the
churches. Look at the Evangelical Lutheran Church and their acceptance
into the clergy of openly gay (I remember when gay meant happy)
monogamous same sex relationship clergy. Is God going to rain His
judgment on us as in Sodam and Gomorrah?
http://www.onenewsnow.com/Printer.aspx?id=654508
Let’s pray the Rosay and ask Mary for her help and intervention.
Regards and God Bless,
Carmine Vaccarino, BEE ‘57

[JR: One does what one can to "fix" the problem. If Obamacare passes, I
hope that the Church's leadership closes the Catholic Hospitals. Shuts
them down tight. Don't sell the buildings. Just put a sign out front:
"Closed due to Obama's Health Care. We have to obey God's Law". They
should have closed the Catholic schools when the Government stuck its
nose in education. It should have been litigated without end on
"freedom of religion" grounds. Here we have a classic example of
"government option" driving out the competing private service. Time to
put a stake in the ground. What "hill" will we die on? Because they are
killing us. I can't speak for the Lutherans. It's just another step
towards who know what. As a little L libertarian, they are free to make
the rules for their social circle. I wish we were accorded the same
liberty. There's no conscience exception in Obamacare.]

the "heavy lifting" and will for some time to come. I guess the big
question is will AN be a Chem E or Mech E. Double major maybe? With
genes like that, I can see the Admissions Office penciling it in now.
Class of 2031! Hope I'm here to report it. Hope some one is doing
Jottings for me. I probably won't be able to hit the keyboard. That's

JEmail: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) disagrees
Dear Jasper John
Your comments on the pending health care legislation are based on widely spread misinformation.
I also note that the US Catholics Bishops are strongly behind heath
reform of the kind proposed by President Obama. from below: The
cardinal affirmed that the conference views health care “as a
basic right belonging to all human beings, from conception to natural
death” and therefore supports “universal health care
reform.”
There are no “death panels” proposed under the bill nor is
there any mention of rationing. It is the intention of the writers of
the bill to make it “abortion neutral” People on both sides
of the issue agree that it should be neutral regarding abortion and the
exact wording is being negotiated.
Sincerely
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961
[JR: Dear Jasper Stebbins: With all due respect, once again we have to
agree to disagree agreeable. The esteemed cardinal is wrong there is no
basic "right" to health care. A "right" implies that some one is
OBLIGATED to provide it. And subsequently, when provided, I am
OBLIGATED to pay for it. I may choose to contribute to the health care
of the indigent as with Catholic Charities, or other such VOLUNTARY
contributions. But I have no OBLIGATION! As far as "death panels", the
UK and Oregon have demonstrated that effectively that this is what
results when "boards" decide what they will and will not pay for. The
bills are definitely NOT NEUTRAL with respect to abortion -- check out
Oregon, Massachusetts, Canada, and the UK. Sorry, but I don't make
deals with the devil. AND these "details" are morally offensive. You
may choose to accept these folks at face value believing what they say
is so, but I do not. Politicians' lips! My injineering classes always
stressed measurement. And these don't measure up!]

The Center for Professional Advancement, 90 Minute Accredited Online Training
September 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)
Description
Clean coal technology is being developed to reduce the environmental
impact of utilizing coal in energy generation. Approximately 25% of the
electricity generated worldwide is coal based. The required
technologies include removing impurities from coal, followed by
gasification, flue gas clean-up and carbon capture. There are
technical, economic, social and political issues regarding the
application of these technologies. This 90- minute accredited online
training will address these issues and provide the attendees with a
scientific, process and economic understanding of the current and
potential utilization of clean coal technology.
Gennaro J. (Jerry) Maffia, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering Manager, Petrochemicals Industry
After twenty years as a principal process engineer and manager in the
petrochemicals industry, mostly with Atlantic Richfield, Inc., Jerry
Maffia joined Widener University in the fall of 1992 as Chairman of the

This weeks Bio is on a crafty leftie that hails from Merrick, N.Y..
Justin Otto is a great guy who truly lives the “Lax or Die
Lifestyle” Check out Topside Lacrosse. A few weeks back he was
sidelined with a dislocated elbow; now with that being said a lot of
players would pack it in and just let the summer go by and enjoy it.
Otto on the other hand is not that kind of person. He worked back to
getting on the floor and sniping goals with the best of them.
Otto played his high school lacrosse at Chaminade and then moved on the DI ranks of Manhattan College,
where he was one of the leading goal-scorers for all four years. While
beasting it on the lax field Otto majored in Civil Engineering and also
minored in Mathematics. One really great thing I like about Otto is he
is really pushing to get indoor lacrosse in the New York scene.
Don’t be surprised to find a league or two pop up, then you will
know who to thank. Until next time boys and girls, Cheers.

Dear John,
It is hard to believe that another year has gone by, and
it is time for the Annual Retreat in Riverdale! I know that you are
usually committed on weekends, but if that should change we would be
delighted to have you join with us on the Weekend. The attached email
is being sent to all men alumni in the tri-state area. This promises to
be not only a great time for spiritual renewal, but also a good
networking opportunity. It would be helpful if you could include the
notice in the next edition of Jasper Jottings.
Thanks for all you help as usual.

For the past 18 years, a group of dedicated Manhattan College alumni
have sponsored a men’s retreat at the Passionist Center in the
Bronx. Our goal has been to provide a retreat sanctuary for Catholic
Christian men of faith to help reflect and prepare for the work and
mission God has in store for each of us. This year’s retreat
theme is Dignity. The present challenges in our society make this a
timely topic. We have arranged a compelling slate of speakers who will
share their thoughts and wisdom on dignity. Attendees can expect to
hear and learn many wonderful lessons on how dignity can help navigate
the difficult challenges of life. You will come away refreshed,
inspired, and with a clarity of purpose for your role as a Christian
man. This retreat will provide you with a wonderful 36 hours sacred
reflection. At the same time, you will meet many other fabulous men
looking for special motivation in preparation for “Monday
morning” and the challenges of life. We provide private rooms for
each retreatant, delicious meals (we can accommodate special dietary
requirements), and the placid environment on the beautiful grounds
overlooking the Hudson River that lends itself to discussion and
personal renewal.
We invite you to come and experience this wonderful retreat. Contact the following retreat team members for more information:

Cheshire Soccer Players Near End Of College Careers
August 20, 2009 by Greg Lederer
*** begin quote ***
The class of 2006 made a lasting impact on the Cheshire High School
girls’ soccer program. Cheshire had never won a Housatonic
Division, Southern Connecticut Conference, or Class LL championship
until the deep group of 12 players came into their own as sophomores.
They earned multiple all-star selections en route to becoming the first
class to graduate with two state titles.
“That was awesome,” said mid-fielder Tracey Colantonio, a
2005 captain with Lauren Olsen and Jackie Fede. “Our class had
that friendship on and off the field. It was amazing to change the
program as a group.”
Their chemistry was evident when five classmates came back together this summer. Colantonio (Manhattan College-Riverdale,
New York), along with Fede (University of Rhode Island-Kingston), Olsen
(Trinity College), Erin Conrod (Southern Connecticut State University),
and Kelly Murnane (Western New England-Springfield, Mass.) rejoined
2007 graduate Lauren Nowakowski (Fordham University-Bronx, New York) on
the South Central Premier League U-23 team.

John,
It’s about time that the Catholic Church and it hierarchy start reading the words of Christ.
No abortion, no euthansia and no ‘death with dignity”.
We fought a war to stop the Nazis from doing the exact same thing. When
and where did we stop seeing the teachings of Christ and start to
belive in the beliefs of Hitler?
We, as Catholics, have to stand up before we are loaded on the trains.

Hi John,
You said it all in your response to the dissenting Jasper on
healthcare. As for the cardinal, if he wants to play in the political
arena like the rest of us, then maybe he should give up his tax free
status like the rest of us. He seems to be fairly liberal on how the
government should spend my (not the Church’s) tax money. Finally,
leaving the language loose and ambiguous leaves the pols loopholes big
enough to drive trucks through to interpret the law in the worst way
possible. I always follow the principal of law that voids something
that is vague, because the real intent of the lawmakers cannot be
clearly understood or interpreted. Thank goodness that you and I were
awake in our Jasper theology classes where we were taught to think
about moral issues instead of just following the party line like they
taught the kids in the local parochial elementary schools.

Now, Jasper Lou63, I have been accused of many things in my life, but
being awake in Father Ritter’s Theology class is CERTAINLY not
one of them. I do remember that the answer to all his test questions
was “Danny Lou and ‘God and the ways of
loving’”; never knew the question, just that one answer.
And I have solid set of D’s to prove I was a “barbarian on
the hill”. :-) fjohn68

Jasper John,
Sorry if I inferred you stayed awake in theology, but I distinctly
remember that my Jasper theology classes relied on reasoning more than
dogma. I was one of the few in my class who came from a public high
school so I was not intimidated by people wearing black coats like the
rest of the class, and thus I often raised some questions in class that
my classmates thought were impudent and for which I might risk having
my knuckles rapped with a ruler. Actually the reverse was true and the
teachers tried to encourage questioning and reasoning to the answers,
as opposed to a Baltimore Catechism memorized answer. I remember once
the late Brother Luke asked a question which one of my parochial school
comrades answered with the standard dogmatic answer. Brother Luke told
him “I’ll bet the nuns told you that in high school. Well
they don’t know what the Hell they are talking about. In this
class we will use reason not dogma to develop our answers.” I
really liked the reason and logic used in my theology classes, because
it seemed to be a logical way to look at the world for an injuneer like
me.

ENDNOTE: Conflict of interest in “medical care”

‘Death Panels’ in Oregon?
Ethel C. Fenig
*** begin quote ***
But a 1998 study from Georgetown University’s Center for Clinical
Bioethics found a strong link between cost-cutting pressures on
physicians and their willingness to prescribe lethal drugs to patients
— were it legal to do so.
The study warns that there must be “a sobering degree of caution
in legalizing [assisted death] in a medical care environment that is
characterized by increasing pressure on physicians to control the cost
of care.”
Cancer drugs can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000 a month. The cost
of lethal medication, on the other hand, is about $35 to $50.

trying to call it this week is a full scale reengineering of 20% of the

We are going to have to pay abortions and euthanasia. And, pay through
