Do Hearts Store Memories? Heart Transplant Recipient Develops Cravings of Donor
*** begin quote ***
A heart transplant patient is craving the food his donor used to eat,
prompting questions over whether the organ has a ‘memory’
of its own.
David Waters cannot stop eating an Australian-made snack food called
Burger Rings, and he has now found out that the teenager whose heart he
received was always eating the same snack.

Vincent C. Sullivan
Vincent C. Sullivan, 84
PORTLAND — Vincent C. Sullivan, 84, beloved husband of Patricia
Moore for 56 years, and loving father of Marypat McGrath, John
Sullivan, and Molly Sullivan, died early Thursday morning, the 14th of
January, 2010, in the loving and tender care of the doctors, nurses,
and staff of the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
He will be sorely missed by his dear wife and children; his
daughter-in-law Krista; his grandchildren, Emma, Tom and Ryan; his
sister Therese Crouteau, his brother Kenneth, his brother and
sister-in-law, Daniel and Carolyn; many nieces and nephews; and his
best friends, Fiona, John, Billy, Frank and Pete.
Vincent was born and raised in Newport, R.I., the eldest son of Daniel
and Margaret (Shea) Sullivan. He graduated from DeLaSalle Academy,
Newport, R.I., and Manhattan College
School of Engineering, Riverdale, N.Y., with a degree in Electrical
Engineering. One of the ‘Greatest Generation’, Vincent
proudly served his country during World War II as a United States
Marine, both in the Pacific Theater, and after the war, in China.
Vincent’s professional career commenced in Boston in the late
1940s and continued for a period of over 40 years. In the early 1950s
he joined the firm of Alonzo B. Reed Architects, Engineers, and
Planners as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Thus began a remarkable
career. Energetic, enthusiastic, and with a massive respect for his
employees and clients, he ultimately assumed the position of Chairman
and Treasurer.
Upon retirement, he and Patricia enjoyed the ‘Best of
Times’…restoring the Church of Ireland School House in
Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland. Today, the School House is
designated as an artistic and historic site of Connemara. It was a
great run! And yes, ’tis true, on a clear day, you can see
Connemara from Casco Bay!
Twelve years ago, Vincent had a severe stroke, which left him with a
right side paralysis. A challenge, but never a deterrent to a
remarkable life. He fought bravely, with dignity, a grand legacy for
his family, his friends, and his care givers. Even with the limitations
due to his stroke, Vincent became a computer giant. In the tradition of
the United States Marine Corp., ‘Never Give Up!’ He will
always and forever be with us.
‘Dear Vincent…may the road rise to meet you, and until we
meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.’
Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at
the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland, with
prayers recited at 12:15 p.m. A 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will
follow at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St.,
Portland. The committal service will follow in the Wilde Chapel,
Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. Online condolences may be expressed at

James Patterson Inc.

Published: January 20, 2010

Like most authors, James Patterson started out with one book, released
in 1976, that he struggled to get published. It sold about 10,000
copies, a modest, if respectable, showing for a first novel. Last year,
an estimated 14 million copies of his books in 38 different languages
found their way onto beach blankets, airplanes and nightstands around
the world. Patterson may lack the name recognition of a Stephen King, a
John Grisham or a Dan Brown, but he outsells them all. Really,
it’s not even close.

Dear John,
Sunday's NY Times magazine this week has a rather lengthy
article about James Patterson, '69. In it, reference is made to how
Michael Ledwidge, '92 got to become a co-author with James. It reports
that Michael had wanted to be a NYC Police Officer but the City was not
hiring so he became a doorman and began to write on his time off. When
he had completed his first book he contacted his fellow alum,
Patterson, who helped him get published. He went on to write a few more
books after which Patterson asked him to become one of his co-authors.
The rest is history.
Another story of Jaspers doing well!

Spotlight on Senior Mobility
by Michael F. Trentacoste
*** begin quote ***
According to the 2000 census, Americans aged 65 and older make up 12.4
percent of the U.S. population. By the year 2030, one in five Americans
will be over 65. To address the increasing mobility challenges
confronted by seniors—both motorists and pedestrians—the
transportation community is looking at safety improvements in the
design of highways and vehicles.
Seniors practice many safe driving behaviors. They are more likely to
wear seatbelts and obey the speed limit. They are less likely to engage
in some of the risky behaviors more common among younger drivers, such
as talking on a cell phone or drinking and driving. Once they become
aware of changes in their physical abilities, older drivers often begin
to self-regulate by limiting their driving at night, in unfamiliar
areas, on roads with heavy traffic, or in inclement weather.
According to Dennis Utter, director of the Office of Traffic Records
and Analysis, National Center for Statistics and Analysis, “The
average annual driver involvement rate in police-reported motor vehicle
crashes in the United States is 55 per 1,000 licensed drivers, while
the corresponding rate for drivers aged 65 and older is only 28 per
1,000.”
*** and ***
Michael F. Trentacoste is FHWA’s associate administrator for
Research, Development, and Technology and director of the
Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. Previously, he was director of
FHWA’s Office of Safety, Research, and Development and director
of FHWA’s Office of Highway Safety. Prior to that position, he
was with the Office of Motor Carriers and directed research,
rulemaking, field operations, and policy and planning functions. He has
a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and an M.S. in transportation from the Transportation Center at Northwestern University.
