*** begin quote ***
This past week we implemented a policy that has been the most difficult
decision of my life. The choice could have been made to do nothing and
allow a lesbian couple to enroll their child in our Kindergarten. But
that choice would have been against Archdiocesan policy; and when a
priest is ordained he promises obedience to his bishop; and I cannot
violate that vow; and I will not.
*** and ***
Our school is a Catholic school. The issue is not about our not
accepting “sinners.” It is not about punishing the child
for the sins of his or her parents. It is simply that the lesbian
couple is saying that their relationship is a good one that should be
accepted by everyone; and the Church cannot agree to that. People who
are divorced do not say divorce is good. There are no pro-divorce
parades. Divorce is a tragedy for everybody. So there’s no
comparing other issues to the issue of gay marriage. Actually, by this
decision we really want to protect the child and his or her parents
from the necessary conflict that their relationship would bring to a
clear-seeing and committed Catholic community.
The policy of the Catholic school system is also to protect the
teachers from being forced – in our own schools – to face
huge conflicts within the classroom, so they can teach clearly, and
also support the family life of the children they are teaching.
According to our Archbishop this policy is good for the lesbian
parents, for their child and also for our teachers and our school. If
people are living other conflicts with our faith and publicly defend
that conflict (for example someone publicly encouraging divorce) we
would have the same problem.

[JR: Dear Father B: I understand, as a blogger, how much trash you must
be wading through. You have my sympathy. Luckily, I don't have the
responsibility you have a guiding a flock through the minefield. May I
suggest a better example of the issue you were saying you would also
have a problem with? For "divorce" substitute "CINO politician". I
would suggest that you use "Catholic In Name Only" politicians as an
example worthy of condemnation. They publicly proclaim to be "Catholic"
and yet advocate for abortion. Some Like House Speaker Pelosi, even
after being privately admonished by her Bishop and later publicly when
she misquoted him, still advocate for (probably imho) a cause that is
even worse than unrepentant homosexuality. Bad enough to sin, but worse
to lead others astray. Us sinners may be making mistakes, but we don't
drag others along with us. CINO Politicians drag us along into sin,
even though they may not "do" it personally. Keep up the good fight.
And know there's one blogger who is supportive. I plan to point out
your post to my fellow Jaspers. Dona Nobis Pacem.]
[JR: Hopefully, my fellow alums can understand that we have to stand
for principles while we love our neighbor. I don't claim to be the
arbiter of saints and sinners. I have enough trouble with my own
(small) challenges. Small to you; huge to me. But, I do think the good
Father can use understanding comments on his blog.]

Why a picture of Jim Valvano you ask?
Simple, we have too much in common. Which gives me the right to feign some expertise on the upcoming NCAA Playoffs.
How so?
Jimmy V. was raised in Seaford, Long Island. I was raised 1 zip code away in North Massapequa, Long Island.
Jimmy V. learned his basketball in the schoolyards and parks of the
South Shore of Long Island. I learned my basketball in those same
schoolyards and parks.
Jimmy V. was a point guard at Rutgers University in 1967. I was a loudmouthed lout at Manhattan College
in 1976 who was thrown out of the Rutgers gymnasium for questioning
Rutgers All-American Phil Seller’s lineage while my beloved
Jaspers were trying to prematurely end Rutgers 31 game winning streak.
(They failed).
Jimmy V’s greatest claim to fame was winning the NCAA Tournament
in Albuquerque in 1983. My greatest claim to fame was winning a
Blackjack Tournament in Albuquerque in 2007.

On This Day in History: March 15
Old-Time Tough-Guy from Brooklyn
by Vernon Parker03-15-2010
*** begin quote ***
From the New York Post in January 1973: “DILLINGER” STAR IS
STABBED. In a street row outside a bar on Ninth Avenue near the
second-rate hotel where he had a room, the actor Lawrence Tierney
required surgery for a ‘serious stab wound’ in the
abdomen.” The following June there was this stark news report:
“Former movie actor Lawrence Tierney was questioned and then
released by police in connection with the apparent suicide leap of a
24-year-old woman from the fourth floor window of a midtown
apartment.” Tierney told police that he had come to visit the
woman, Bonnie Jones, and “had just gotten there, and she just
went out the window.”
Publicity stunts? Far from it. Escapades of Lawrence Tierney such as
these were constantly in the newspapers and tabloids during his days as
a Hollywood actor, beginning with his starring role in Dillinger
(1945). He was often good copy for newspapers on a light news day.
Lawrence Tierney Jr., was born in Brooklyn on March 15, 1919. His
father was chief of New York’s aqueduct police force. (After he
retired from that office he decided to go into show business himself,
making his theatrical debut in the road company of A Streetcar Named
Desire.) Tierney Sr. passed away on Feb. 13, 1964, four years after his
wife Maria’s death.
At first it seemed Lawrence was headed for a career in mathematics
when, after graduation from Brooklyn Boys High School, he won a
scholarship in that subject from Manhattan College. In sports he was a runner for Boys High, winning a lot of awards.

Good Evening All,
Mike Brady,’05 has shared some tragic news with us this evening.
Tom McNeil’s (’04) Sister was killed last night when a taxi
hit she and her brother sometime after the Parade. Tom’s Sister
was a junior at Manhattan College
and very proud to be a Jasper. Tom’s older Brother is in hospital
in critical condition. St. Patrick’s Day has always been an
important day to Tom’s family. They marched in the parade each
year and organized an after the Parade party for the New York Court
Officers. This is a terrible thing to mark what was always a joyous day
in their lives. Please keep Tom, His Sister and Brother, and their
family in your prayers. We pray for the repose of the soul of
Tom’s Sister and for the full and quick recovery of Tom’s
Brother.
Thank you. God Bless.

Wednesday, he struck three pedestrians crossing the intersection of
Central Avenue.
Kate McNeil was transported to South Nassau Hospital where she was pronounced dead by staff, said police.
Bryan McNeil, 25, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
Samantha Koch, 20, suffered head, neck and back injuries and was listed in stable condition.

[JR: From the initial reports, it just sounds like a terrible traffic
accident. As some one who HAS accidentally hit some one that wasn't
hurt, I feel terrible for all involved including the driver. Truly
worth a "prayer request" to all Jaspers.]

JEmail: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) remembers Fess Parker
To one and all: Like many of you of a certain age (“Baby
Boomers” born in the generation after World War II) I know all
the words to the “Ballad of Davy Crockett” and I wanted a
coonskin cap for Christmas. (I never got the coonskin cap, but I did
buy myself one at Disney World after I grew up.)
Fess Parker, who so eloquently acted the part of that authentic American hero, died yesterday at age 85.
My favorite story about Fess Parker was an obscure news item from about
40 years ago, in the dark days of the Vietnam War. An American G.I.,
whose tour of duty in Vietnam was up, told the story. The soldier was
waiting to board a helicopter for the first leg of his journey back
home to America. Before he could get on board, he had to wait for the
arriving passengers to disembark, most of them G.I.s just arriving for
their tour of duty in the combat zone. Among them was a tall man in a
coonskin cap and fringed buckskin jacket and pants – Fess Parker,
in his full Davy Crockett outfit. A surreal moment. But it showed what
kind of a man Fess Parker was. There was no press coverage. Nobody else
ever would have known about it if that soldier hadn’t told the
story. Most of the soldiers in that war were “Davy
Crockett” fans when they were little boys. Fess Parker just
wanted those boys in the combat zone to know that he cared about them.
A nice man.

I wish Manhattan had an Alumni Chapter in the Greater Charlotte NC
area. It’s not convenient or practical to go 600+ miles to NYC
for an event such as this. Perhaps a video web meeting could be
arranged inexpensively so those of us “in far away lands”
could check in, resister and view / chat. Best Wishes for the Alumni

ENDNOTE: Protestants can fire their bishops
http://www.lewrockwell.com/manion/manion94.1.html
Don’t Blame the Pope!
by Christopher Manion
… … is a columnist for The Wanderer, America’s oldest independent Catholic newspaper, founded in 1868.
*** begin quote ***
“When our bishops misbehave, we can fire them,” a
Protestant friend wryly observes. He has in mind, of course, the
concerted effort by U.S. Catholic bishops to nationalize health care.
Yes, Catholic bishops serve for life. The people in the pews
can’t fire them, and it’s a good thing. After all, the
Church is not a democracy.
But the Catholic Church isn’t a theocracy, either. So when our
bishops beat the drum for socialized medicine – and they have,
for years – they unnecessarily alienate many people, and not only
Catholics. After all, the church has always taught that the laity, not
the clergy, should take lead in practical political matters. So why do
our bishops ignore Catholic experts, as well as common sense? Why do
they give aid and comfort to Speaker Pelosi and her disastrous bill,
demanding only that it be “abortion neutral”?
When bishops play politics, they enter a hog wallow for which they are
ill-equipped. But there they are, and the damage that their
“reform” would cause demands a candid appraisal. After all,
if the bishops insist on playing politics, they invite political
analysis. As a Catholic layman, in the Christian spirit of charity and
truth, I offer this brief survey of some key aspects of the
bishops’ political involvement that are often overlooked.
*** and ***
And last, just in case, there’s Congress. Specifically, Catholic
Senator Patrick Leahy, sent a shot across the bow of any bishop who
might be thinking of barring Leahy from receiving the Eucharist (as
Canon Law requires). The mere prospect of a subpoena from the Chairman
of the Judiciary Committee is enough to chill the spine of any bishop
who still has one.
ObamaCare would be dead as a doornail if the bishops stopped supporting
it. But they persist, heatedly rejecting (but not addressing)
complaints detailing their leftist bias. All believers should pray for
our spiritual leaders, to be sure. And, in this season of Lent, we are
often reminded that this world is indeed the Vale of Tears.
Nonetheless, the sad truth remains: if our Catholic bishops are
successful in their campaign for national health care, there will be a
lot more tears.
*** end quote ***
[JR: Any long-time reader of my stuff will know that I think that Big
Gooferment “neutered” the American Church with the sex
scandal. For their part of this supposed (or suspected) Devil’s
Bargain, the Bishops can NOT turn against the “King”.
Hence, their muted response to Abortion, Healthcare, and CINO
politicians. And we are all worse off for it. The “Social
Justice” mantra, that the Liberal / Progressive / Socialist /
Marxists have “popularized”, has been picked up by the
American Church. To it’s own detriment. The American Catholic
Church is a shadow of its former self and has failed to fight for the
Oppressed. The Catholic Schools, the Catholic Hospitals, the Catholic
Charities, and most sadly the once great Catholic Universities are
GONE. Fallen to the “King”! Sorry, until The American
Church stands for it’s core beliefs, it’s never going to be
taken seriously. Once “Roman Catholic” was a brand; today
it’s a joke. Sorry, but we need a new Martin Luther to restore
the Church’s ethical basis. Until then, the attendance and
collections will be off. Why support a charade? Maybe the Protestants
have the right organizational model!]
