The ABC News story:

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/GoodMorningAmerica/GMA020905Blind_climber.html

Fewer than 100 people in the world have ever reached the highest peaks of the seven highest mountains. Erik Weihenmayer just joined that elite group. And, incidentally, he’s blind.

And, we complain about the small challenges of life. I'm going to try to do more with this example in mind. Hope we all can do the same.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Screenwriter and producer Liam O'Brien received an Oscar nomination for the story of Frank Capra's Here Comes the Groom (1951). He penned or co-penned most of his movie scripts during the '50s through the early '60s and became a television producer afterwards. The brother of actor Edmond O'Brien and a native of New York, O'Brien held several creative jobs following studies at Fordham University and Manhattan College. He was a poet, a cartoonist, a union organizer, and had also been with the army signal Corps during WWII but it was as a playwright that O'Brien first made a name for himself. His first hit was the Broadway-produced comedy The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker. The show's great success led O'Brien to Hollywood and to the Capra film. After its success, O'Brien wrote screenplays for some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Bing Crosby, Elizabeth Taylor, Burt Lancaster, and Tony Curtis. Film credits include Chain Lightning (1950) and The Devil at 4 0'Clock (1961). As a producer, O'Brien was behind such television series as Gibbsville, Police Story, Miami Vice, and miniseries such as The Awakening Land, starring Elizabeth Montgomery. O'Brien died of heart failure on March 24, 1996.

MEN’S SOCCER TEAM SHUTOUTS JAMES MADISON

HARRISONBURG, VA (SEPTEMBER 22, 2002) – The Manhattan College men's soccer team snapped a two game losing streak when they defeated James Madison 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Jaspers (2-5) took the lead at 19:57 when Nino Silvestro (Ossining, NY) placed a 17-yard shot in the upper right corner.

Manhattan's defense prevented the high powering Dukes (4-4) offense from scoring. Whenever James Madison was able to get a solid scoring chance, they were turned away by the solid play of Antonio Treglia (Brookville, NY). Treglia made five saves for his first shutout of the season.

The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, September 25, when they take on Maryland at 7:00 pm.

The Lady Jaspers have earned their second championship crown this season.

The Lady J's have won their last 13 matches for a remarkable 13-1 overall record to mark the programs most consecutive wins in the school history.

In the early morning match against the Phoenix, senior co-captain Amy O'Dorisio (San Diego, CA) led the team in digs with 21 and had 11 kills, while GoedeleLuka' Van Cauteren (Oetingen, Belgium) recorded her sixth triple-double of the season with 16 kills, 16 assists and 11 digs. Elon was led by Maria LaBrutto, who totaled 12 kills and 15 digs. The game results were 30-26, 27-30, 30-24 and 30-27.

WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS SHORT AGAINST FORDHAM

BRONX, NY (SEPTEMBER 21, 2002) – The Manhattan College women's soccer team lost 3-0 against Fordham on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Jaspers (0-5-1) gave up three second half goals to lose its fifth straight game. Manhattan hung tough in the first half and kept the game scoreless at half time.

However, the Rams offense was too much for the Lady Jasper's in the second half. Kirstin Gellatly scored at 48:51 when she roofed a shot in the left corner to give Forham all the scoring they would need. Caitlin Gansfuss scored at 84:35 and Gellatly scored her second goal of the game at 87:57.

Jeanne Marie Gilbert (E. Northport, NY) made numerous solid saves to keep the game close. Gilbert made a lunging save against Gellatly in 20th minute of the first half to keep the game knotted at zero. For the game Gilbert made nine saves and Meghan McDonald made three saves for the Rams.

The Lady Jaspers return to action on Tuesday, September 24 when they take on Wagner at 3:30 pm.

John (Ferdinand),

Thinking of putting together a group to work on our 40th (2004)from the Prep. Can you believe this?

Main thing is getting a large working group/committee.  I'm thinking of having a 50 man committee with no "chair".   I can come up with a listing of about 50% of the class from the 99 Manhattan College alumni book.  Also, somewhere in my house is a listing from our 20th.

Two questions: interested in giving me a hand in getting this going; and secondly, do you happen to have your list sorted by Prep?

I travel a fair amount on business (not fun) but when I'm around, you can catch me at <privacy invoked>.

Hope this note finds you well.

Mike Daly

[JR: Hi Mike. No I can't believe it. I'm too young. I could offer you some support. I know there are a few prepsters on the list but I don't have them segregated or marked. I can start such a list if you want me too. (It's easy enough.) Some have identified themselves. I can send any messages you need sent and keep the list like I do for jottings. Will this help?]

I found an article at National Review Online that I thought you'd like to see:

http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-dans090902.asp

Dear John:

I sent this article to your "bigfoot" email address.  I didn't know if you received it.  So, I decided to send it to the email address on this week's Jasper Jottings.  Possibly, you received it and didn't think my article in September 9th's National Review Online on "Re-envisioning Lower Manhattan" was not appropriate to reference.  I realized after someone told me that the attachment is only the NRO website and one has to scroll down to articles and then go to Monday September 9th's issue and click on my article.  I hope this works.  If you get it, let me know one way or the other.  Enjoy reading it anyway.

Peter Dans '57

[JR: Got it but respectfully disagree. We have to build it back almost the way it was, maybe a little taller. Sort of like when a bully challenges you, you have to put it back bigger and better. I think we have to demonstrate that just demolishing it won't cow us into changing. But this is just one pig-headed blunt-speaking engineer's point of view.]

Subject:  The Bill Of Rights Modernized

The Bill Of Rights Modernized

The following has apparently been attributed to State Representative Mitchell Kaye from GA. This guy should have run for President:

"We, the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other liberal, bed-wetters.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of No Rights".

ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you!  You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful, do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII: You don't have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.

ARTICLE IX: You don't have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

ARTICLE X: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness -- which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights,"

ARTICLE X1: This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back, for good, to the shit-hole you came from.

If you agree, share this with a friend. No, you don't have to, and nothing tragic will befall you if you don't. I just think it is about time common sense is allowed to flourish - call it the age of reason revisited.

[JR: Interesting, Bob. A little harsh. But, I can't say I disagree.]

<A message snip from Bill Bautz>

On a different note, a Manhattan alum, Peter McDermott, EVP of LG industries, will be quoted extensively in a Fortune article about biometric security devices, specifically iris scanning.  He mentioned his Manhattan connection to the interviewer but it will not appear in the article.  If you could get your hands on the article it might make for a good piece to include in your Jottings.

Bill

A Final Thought

"To be prepared for war, is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace." --George Washington

I notice that George (the original) as opposed to George the Father or George the Son didn’t say that “going to war’ was the way to preserve the peace. Grudgingly, at least they are focusing on one of the few duties of the government that is in its Constitutional mandate. Since they apparently messed up a little by not being organized and listening to the front line agents, it would be nice if they stopped all the extraneous tasks that they have taken on and focused on one of their few they should be doing. Here are a few suggestions for the chopping block: the Department of Homeland Security (we have a Department of Defense already). The absurd “war’” on drugs was lost when God created man with free will and the ingenuity to use it. The Department of Agriculture paying rich people not farm with taxes extracted from poor people. The Post Office, Amtrack, and all of the other absurd programs that subsidize what people wouldn’t pay for.

Both the Republicrats and the Democrans are guilty of “fighting this new war” with old the Pork that they can stick in the budget. A plague on both of them. Write in “none of the above”. Jaspers in Taxachusetts would do well to consider the Libertarian tax limitation on this November’s ballot.

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
