The CIC pinched the number 6 nerve in his neck this week. Which Side? Right of course being right handed. Right! Hence this issue may not be as well done as you usually expect. Sorry but typing in pain impairs quality. Sorry.

Being hurt has really made me sensitive to what it must mean to have a physical disability. When I see someone with such a challenge, I'll just have to try harder to be more sensitive to their needs. That and when I am better, I need to find out why my ViaVoice setup did work. Arghh!

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

THE FLEA THEATER’S ACCLAIMED PRODUCTION OF THE GUYS COMES TO MANHATTAN COLLEGE FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

RIVERDALE, N.Y.  --  Manhattan College will present The Flea Theater’s acclaimed production of The Guys, by Anne Nelson, on Friday, February 7 at 8pm in Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.  Admission is free.

The Guys tells the story of a fire captain who has lost most of his men in the September 11th attack and the editor who helps him write their eulogies.  The Guys, partially autobiographical, grew out of Ms. Nelson’s own experience when she was asked to lend her writing talents to help a fire captain honor the lives of his men.  Originally developed at the Flea Theater in response to the events of September 11, Ms. Nelson wrote the play in just nine days.

In TheNew York Times Peter Marks wrote, "The Guys not only memorializes the men and women who died, but also the almost palpable sense of connection that New Yorkers of all stripes felt immediately after the attacks.”

After a sold-out off-Broadway run at the Flea Theater for 13 months, the film version of The Guys starring Sigourney Weaver and Anthony LaPaglia will open in Manhattan on February 14.

Seating for The Guys will be available on a first-come first-serve basis with the doors opening at 7pm.

The Flea Theater’s production of The Guys is part of Manhattan College’s sesquicentennial celebration. Throughout the 2002-2003 academic year, Manhattan College is bringing to its Riverdale, New York, campus an impressive array of special guest speakers and events in such fields as religious studies, education, engineering and the arts.   To learn more about Manhattan College’s sesquicentennial celebration, visit the Web site: http://www.manhattan.edu/sesqui.

MANHATTAN COLLEGE DEDICATES INDOOR TRACK IN GYMNASIUM TO THE LATE JOSEPH KEARNEY '67

On December 7, 2002, Manhattan College dedicated the indoor track in Draddy Gymnasium to the late Joseph Kearney ’67 and later that day inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame.

What best captures Kearney’s athletic spirit and his place in the Manhattan College scholar-athlete tradition is probably not that he was a three-time All-American, held nine Manhattan track records, captained three teams or that he bested Jim Ryun, a former world record holder, in the half-mile in a qualifying heat of the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in 1977. Rather, what distinguished Kearney’s track career was his ability to deliver consistently extraordinary performances, beyond expectations, when his team needed it to win.

From the beginning to the end of his career on the track, the Manhattan team looked to Kearney for that consistently strong anchor leg on its premier relays. After college, Kearney did not compete in track and field. But his running and the Manhattan track experience remained a central part of him. After working in the Executive office of the White House in the science and technology arena under Presidents Ford and Carter, he went into the energy business. In 1989, he was the founding CEO of the US Generating Company, an independent power product which by 1998 had $6 billion in assets and over 1,000 employees. Throughout his business career, Joe emphasized the critical importance of team building and continued to demonstrate that extraordinary individual effort necessary to pull the team to its goal.

Running also remained central to Kearney. He ran regularly, supported the younger generation of Kearneys in their track pursuits and closely followed the exploits for the Manhattan track teams. The experience defined his character to a large extent. It as for this reason most fitting that in 1998 when his time came to move on again, his last moment was during a run through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC on a late Saturday afternoon in October.

DATELINE: NEWTOWN SQUARE

It was the type of business trip he was trying to reduce in his life.

Before the sun rose Wednesday, Michael Otto Sullivan left his Newtown Square luxury home and two young children for the familiar routine of connecting flights, which would have brought him to a South Carolina meeting later that day.

Later that morning, and moments after its 8:53 a.m. takeoff, the 19-seat plane Mr. Sullivan shared with 18 passengers and two crew members veered back toward Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C.

Traveling full throttle, US Airways Express Flight 5481 slammed into a hangar and crashed in flames. None of the passengers, many of them business trippers like Mr. Sullivan, survived what was to have been an 80-mile flight to Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C. Mr. Sullivan, 44, moved from Texas about two years ago and was setting up a Philadelphia satellite office for his Houston-based industrial software company, Cape Software.

"It was supposed to stop him from doing all that flying, so he could spend more time with his family," said Jackie Hatala, Mr. Sullivan's sister-in-law, from the Sullivan home yesterday.

A co-owner handling his company's sales, Mr. Sullivan would fly a couple of times a month to business meetings all over the country and Canada, Hatala said. For Wednesday's trip, he had planned to fly back home last night.

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Mr. Sullivan attended Manhattan College before taking a chemical-engineering fellowship at the University of Houston. After his graduate work, he started the roughly decade-old international company, which creates simulation software for businesses, out of his home with a friend.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Donna; a daughter, Eleni Rose, 3; and a son, Sam Otto, 1. He is also survived by his brother, Steven Sullivan, of Austin, Texas, and parents John and Barbara Sullivan of Lady Lake, Fla.

Funeral services were still being scheduled yesterday. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Anastasia's Church in Newtown. Arrangements are being handled by D'Anjolell Memorial Home in Broomall.

Donations may be sent to the building fund of St. Anastasia's School, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, Pa., 19073.

Describing her brother-in-law as the "smartest person I've ever met," Hatala said Mr. Sullivan's interests ranged from opera to the Houston Rockets to the management texts he devoured. She said Mr. Sullivan scheduled his busy life so that every free minute would be spent with his children.

Before having his own children, Hatala said, Mr. Sullivan would fly from Houston to Philadelphia or Wilkes-Barre about once a year to pick up her 11-year-old son for visits to Mr. Sullivan's Houston home.

In the space of a day, Mr. Sullivan would fly into the area, pick up his nephew at the airport, and get right back on a plane to accompany his nephew back to Houston.

"He didn't want him to fly alone," Hatala said.

Dear John,

I received a message that there was an obituary in Monday's (1/13/03) Journal News, The Westchester Paper, for Frank M. Ippolito, '55. He was a Cardinal Hayes Graduate and I believe worked for the NYC Board of Ed.

I was unable to get a copy of the paper and thought that you might be able to chase it down.

                        Best,
                       Mike McEneney Esq, '53 BBA

[JR: Good heads up. I was able to find it on the web. I wouldn't have been able to without your alert. Thanks. ]

JASPERS HOLD OFF RIDER, 76-66, FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

Manhattan Wins At Rider For First Time Since 1994-95

Lawrenceville, NJ (January 16, 2003) - Junior Luis Flores (New York, NY) scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Manhattan Jaspers to a 76-66 victory over MAAC rival Rider Thursday evening at Alumni Gym. The win was Manhattan's seventh in a row and lifts the Jaspers to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC. Rider falls to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in the MAAC.

Manhattan also recorded its first victory at Rider's Alumni Gym since the 1994-95 season.

Manhattan played a steady first half, shooting 50% from the field, and took a 38-31 lead at halftime. Flores and senior Jared Johnson (Bronx, NY) combined for 24 of Manhattan's 38 first-half points.

Rider's Jerry Johnson, who hit only two field goals in the first half, single-handedly pulled the Broncs back in the game, scoring eight points during a 12-2 run which tied the game up at 43-43. After a Jasper timeout, Manhattan scored 13 unanswered points to open up a 56-43 lead with 11:44 remaining. Five different Jaspers contributed baskets during the run. Rider made a push and scored seven straight points to close within six, but junior Dave Holmes (Washington, DC) hit a jumper and the third of his three treys to put the Jaspers back up by 11, and the Broncs would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Flores paced the Jaspers with 23 points and four assists, while Johnson finished with 16 points and seven boards. Holmes came off the bench to score 15 points with seven rebounds, and sophomore Charus Moore (Boston, MA) tallied a season-high nine points, all in the first half.

For the game, Manhattan picked up 21 assists on 26 baskets and forced 18 Rider turnovers.

Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, January 18, at Saint Peter's. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 PM.

Hi Bill:

You are correct. I don't put people's email addresses in the Jottings. When I solicited everyone I promised them my absolute best effort at privacy. Since I post Jottings on the Web, spammers have automatic tools that "harvest" email addresses. Additionally, even if I was just emailing, Jotting people want to be in control. People were initially afraid I was a shill for the fund-raisers at the College and would turn their info over to the dreaded telemarketing fund raisers. Hopefully I have demonstrated that isn't the case.

You have suggested what I do to link up people. Linking old friends, and new ones, is one of the reasons I do this craziness. The process is described in the "boilerplate" included with every issue. A BCC copy of this message is on its way to George. Hopefully he'll contact you. If he doesn't want to, then hopefully he'll tell me. If neither of us hears anything, I'll call him or use whatever means I have available to get to him because email is unreliable. My objective is to make links. I have even linked with some old classmates doing this. It's a hoot, sad, joyous, and interesting all at the same time.

I took the time to write this to encourage our fellow alums to recruit others to our electronic community, inform them about what goes on under the covers week to week, and encourage them to share with us what they are doing.

Hope this works,
John

John,

This is quite an effort you have undertaken.  I admire it.  How long have you been doing it?

There is another fellow like you, who undertook an effort to keep friends advised of deals.  My son told me about it, and I have become a regular user of this guy's site.  www.hot-deals.org.  Seems  like a touch of the old days, where everything on the net was free, before the overt commercialism took hold.

Now, I get three porn ads a week in my email, along with 2 DVD copy and 3 or 4 mortgage ads every day.  Totally nuts.  A while ago I used to try to follow some of the news groups and even they got clogged with porn ads.

I had an interesting experience yesterday.  A visit from friends who lived next door to me in my first apartment 39 years ago.  We kept in touch with Christmas cards, etc., but I hadn't seen them in over 25 years.  And the odd thing about it, was that conversation flowed like we had been in regular contact.  Reassuring in a way.

Hi Bill:

In it's current form, I've been producing a weekly ezine since late in 1999. It's had two or three face lifts, I have taken a few weeks off when my work and travel schedule made it impossible to devote the ~20 hours per week. I have it beaten into shape where if I spend an hour or two a night on it, then Sundays are about "shipping" as opposed to "doing the whole thing".

Yeah, spam, porn, and gambling can kinda take the fun out of it.

It's amazing how you can pick up where you left off. It seems so easy to "lose" people and so hard to make new friends, that I try to treasure every opportunity.

Enjoy,
John

Thanks for all the hard work you put in for all of us. Brother Joseph (Basil) Dzikas was a good friend of my grandfather, Bud Walsh (himself a graduate of La Salle Institute,1935).  Brother Basil was my driver education teacher.  Brother Basil was one of the kindest men I think I have ever met.  I appreciate your making our large community, in a word, small.  I might add, the way we all intend it to remain.

A Final Thought

The nerve pinch has really wiped me out. I don't have anything prepared in advance so let's just quickly kvetch somethings for you to think about.

Is Bush really taking us to war or just playing poker? I still haven't figured that out.

Is Bloomberg really going to clean up the NYC Education System? He really seems to be at least trying something different.

Congrats to the ex-IL guv for effectively eliminating the death penalty. How long will it take everyone to wake up to the fact that the government shouldn't kill its citizens?

Curmudgeon

And that’s the last word.
