The folly of man. We think we know more than we do.

In this case, we’ll never know. But one can easily see in our collective mind’s eye: a relatively quick ride to the hospital, an MRI, possibly a burr hole in the skull, maybe surgery, some drugs, and few days later she walks out to the rest of her life.

Maybe, maybe not.

After Sonny Bono’s skiing accident, you’d have thought helmets would be a “fashion item”. I’m sure celebrities don’t want to be pictured with “helmet head”.

I hope all my fellow Jaspers wear helmets all the time.

It’ll help when the read my babblings and want to beat their heads against the wall.

Or if they go skiiing, bicycle riding, or drive anywhere today. Lot of nuts out there; not all wearing tin foil hats like me!

Hope this unnecessary death leads to common sense wisdom on the ski slopes.

Hope this doesn’t lead to more dumb laws. People have to be free to make mistakes. Even fatal ones.

Right to Life? Only if you value it. And, protect it. Starting with your own.

Nearly 100 members of the Georgetown community gathered in Copley Formal Lounge for the April 22 event — sponsored by the Lecture Fund, the Office of the Senior Vice President, Center for the Environment, EcoAction and The Corp.

Fahey and Georgetown President John J. DeGioia both recalled their introductions to Earth Day. Fahey was a student at Manhattan College while DeGioia was in junior high school.

Sen. Marchi’s death marks end of an era for Staten Island

Former GOP state Sen. John Marchi, 87, the “Father of Secession” and one of the longest-serving lawmakers in United States history, died on Saturday while vacationing with his family in Lucca, Italy.

Sen. Marchi died of complications of pneumonia, according to his daughter Aline Balbas.

Sen. Marchi was traveling with his wife, Maria Luisa, and their daughter Joan Migliori. The Marchis frequently visited Lucca, Mrs. Marchi’s hometown and home to other relatives of Sen. Marchi.

“New Yorkers have lost one of the true giants of our public life,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “John never backed away from a cause he thought was right. He always represented, not just the interests of the people of Staten Island, but also their courage, and their patriotism.”

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but Ms. Balbas said her father’s body would be returned to Staten Island this week for burial.

“To his extended family and friends, he will be remembered first as a man of faith, a loving husband and father, and a devoted friend,” the Marchi family said in a statement. “We, the family of Senator Marchi, are especially proud of the fact that his actions and deeds — both as a public servant and as a private citizen — were always principled, ethical and tempered.”

First elected in 1956, Sen. Marchi, one of the most revered figures, political or otherwise, in Island history, was the longest-serving lawmaker in New York history when he announced his retirement in 2006.

A Ward Hill resident at the time of his death, Sen. Marchi was born in Brighton Heights on May 20, 1921, and also lived in New Brighton and Silver Lake.

Sen. Marchi attended the former PS 43 in Brighton Heights, and Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Tompkinsville.

He was a graduate of St. Peter’s Boys High School, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Manhattan College, the Bronx; a law degree from St. John’s University School of Law in Queens, and a doctorate in juridical science from Brooklyn Law School.

Sen. Marchi belonged to the U.S. Coast Guard and saw combat duty in the Atlantic, Pacific and Asiatic theaters during World War II.

He was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church.

The Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, is handling the arrangements.

It is with great sadness that we report the news that Mike Rush ‘83 (beloved brother of Diane Rush-Roberts ‘79 and dear brother in law of Matt Roberts ‘80) passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 10, 2009, after a three year battle with a rare form of cancer-liposarcoma.

Please keep his wife Amy, his children Meaghan (13) and Michael (9), as well as the whole Rush family in your thoughts and prayers.

Donations can be made in Mike’s name to Saint Anne’s Parish, 35 Dartmouth Street, Garden City, N.Y. 11530 or to the Michael Rush Family Trust, 1035 Del Mar Ave., Franklin Square, N.Y. 11010. The Trust was set up in September of 08 and donations are still accepted. The original link is as follows:

Dear Family & Friends,

What can we do? What do they need? These are the questions posed from our St. Anne’s community, as well as friends, colleagues, and relatives. In response to this amazing outpouring of love and concern, we are asking you to join us in supporting Michael Rush and his family on this intense journey. Many of you know Mike, whether through school, CYO swimming, lifeguarding at Robert Moses, growing up in Flushing or through his loving wife Amy and children Meaghan and Michael.

Mike has been battling a rare form of cancer, liposarcoma, for about two years. He has impressed the doctors, as well as his family and friends, with his ability to tolerate treatments and multiple surgical procedures. Mike has always taken the good with the bad; even the news of his cancer spreading didn’t get him down. Through the power of prayer and faith in his doctors, he continues to fight this terrible disease.

After his first surgery to remove a tumor in his leg and part of his leg muscle, Mike continued to go about his life, being a great father to his children, coaching CYO swimming, and lifeguarding at Robert Moses. He has recently undergone spinal surgery to remove multiple tumors that were pressing on his nerves and causing him tremendous pain. He now has a titanium rod in his back to replace his affected spine. Although the surgery was a success, Mike still has multiple tumors throughout his body that are not responding well to treatment.

A benefit has been scheduled to help Mike and his family in this unbelievable battle. We are asking you to support this effort in any and all ways possible… attending, purchasing chances, donation of raffles…and most importantly, with your prayers.

Brother Foley was born on September 7, 1939 and passed away on Monday, April 27, 2009.

Brother Foley was last known to be living in Lincroft, New Jersey.

He was a graduate of Manhattan College, New York City and received a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Detroit in 1961.

A viewing will be held at De La Salle Hall, Lincroft on Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. A viewing and Mass of Christian Burial will be held in New York City followed by interment at the Christian Brothers section at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to De La Salle Nursing Development, 810 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738 would be appreciated.

Busy past weekend at Farandaville

Very busy.

Between attending a breakfast honoring a friend of mine, Ed Riely - doing lots of little league baseball both days with Tim, and going to a Communion Breakfast honoring St. Augustine’s pastor Msgr Hillary Franco, we were running around.

And my mother is having her troubles. She has some sort of respiratory infection and Brigid and I (mostly Brigid) are seeing her three times a day to do some inhalation therapy. My mother hits 83 on Wednesday.

Anyway Brigid and I made a presentation to Ed at the Northern Westchester and Putnam Center of Life Breakfast, honoring his 42 years (!) of prolife efforts - going back to his senior year at Manhattan College. I read a bit of a tribute to Ed and Brigid then read the emails his four children had sent - all of them are out of the area, with his oldest boy Beau, in Afghanistan.

So naturally, I follow the link to view all the creative customized creations by artist Lauren Luna and I must say “I was blown away!” Without further ado; Ladies and Gentleman I present Lauren Luna!

Lauren Luna is a nationally known professional artist, born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Lauren’s latest ventures include, Custom Kicks, a business that allows customers to custom-design their own footwear. While working for Custom Kicks, Lauren established a large and diverse fan base that embraced her gift of art and fashion.

Lauren’s artwork consist of a blend of urban realism, abstract expression, and social commentary which has established her as one of the most-talented artist of our generation. Her artwork was featured in major galleries including: the Cinque Gallery in New York, New York, Ball State University School of Art Gallery, Munice, Indiana and the Morpho Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.

Lauren received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a focus on painting from Kent State University. She was awarded her Masters degree in Special Education from Manhattan College and is currently working on her Masters of Fine Arts in non -figurative studies at the Academy of Art University. Time to get my run on

Just got back from my 6 mile run. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to run. Who knew?!? Back in the day, my uncle Tyrone Pannell (they called him Rony) was a college track star and I think some of it rubbed off on me. SWEET!!

Logan later got to watch his friend at Manhattan College, Tyrone Pannell, a superb hurdler and high jumper. After graduation, Pannell joined the Marines and Logan joined the Army and both went to Vietnam, but only Logan came back alive.

“Tyrone never fell,” Logan said, recalling the old days of the wooden track. “The ham-and-eggers fell but not Tyrone.” - The NY Times

BLOOMSBURG, PA. (04/29/2009; 1546)(readMedia)– Bloomsburg, Pa. native and Iraq War veteran Brig. Gen. Paul Genereux successfully completes more than three years command of the New York Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division this Sunday in a change of command ceremony at Camp Smith, near Peekskill, N.Y.

Genereux transfers command on Sunday, May 3 of the Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division, based in Troy, N.Y. with Soldiers across New York State and associated units across five states.

Genereux led the division during its reorganization following the unit’s return from Iraq in 2006, provided leadership, guidance and resources to the division’s training with the U.S. Army Central Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt in 2007 and the mobilization and deployment of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and 50th Brigade Combat Team divisional elements for combat actions overseas in 2008.

Brigadier General Genereux will become the Deputy Commander of the New York Army National Guard. He will be responsible for the training, mobilization readiness and domestic preparedness of more than 10,500 Army National Guard Citizen Soldiers across New York State.

Genereux resides in Bloomsburg, Penn. with his wife Rosalie and is the Director of Construction for Torcon Incorporated, Redbank, N.J.

Brig Gen. Paul Genereux:

Genereux has led Army National Guard Soldiers at the company, battalion, brigade and division during his command positions with the New York Army National Guard. He mobilized for federal service in May 2004 with the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters for Operation Iraqi Freedom as the deputy commander for maneuver with the Multinational Division North Central Iraq and Task Force Liberty. During his deployment to Iraq, Genereux was responsible for the tactical operations of more than 22,000 Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard Soldiers.

He served as the Deputy Commanding General of the 42nd Infantry Division before taking command of the division in April, 2006.

Genereux graduated from Manhattan College in 1972 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and entered military service in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in October of that year. After five years enlisted service, he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Army Reserve in February 1978. Genereux was first assigned as the Operations Officer for the 300th Civil Affairs Group in Riverdale, Maryland.

Genereux has held a variety of command and staff positions, culminating in his command of the 42nd Infantry Division. He mobilized for federal service in May 2004 with the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters for Operation Iraqi Freedom as the deputy commander for maneuver with the Multinational Division North Central Iraq and Task Force Liberty. Prior to this, Genereux served as deputy commander for the 53rd Troop Command and deputy commander of Joint Task Force-42 during the National Guard’s response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. He also commanded the 3rd Armored Brigade, 42nd Infantry Division and the 1st Battalion, 101st Cavalry.

Genereux is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, the Armor Officer Basic Course, and the Command and General Staff College. He is a graduate of the Army War College in 2001 and awarded a Master of Strategic Studies degree.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with two stars, and National Defense Service Ribbon.

Genereux resides in Bloomsburg, Penn. with his wife Rosalie and is the Director of Construction for Torcon Incorporated, Redbank, N.J.

The 42nd Infantry Division:

The New York Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division, one of only eight combat divisions in the entire Army National Guard, provides leadership, training and resource oversight for the combat readiness and mobilization of eight Army National Guard brigades, including the 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in Massachusetts, the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade in New York, the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in New Jersey, 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain) in Vermont, 197th Fires Brigade in New Hampshire and the 369th Sustainment Brigade, also in New York.

The 42nd Division headquarters deployed to Iraq in 2005 for Operation Iraqi Freedom and served in Cairo, Egypt in November, 2007 partnered with elements of the Egyptian army as the senior Army Forces headquarters during the joint, multinational Bright Star exercise in support of U.S. Army Central.

The Rainbow Division, as it is known in the Army for its unique shoulder sleeve insignia, is scheduled to deploy its headquarters element to Japan in December of this year for the Pacific Command’s joint, multinational training exercise Yama Sakura alongside the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

Mark, I just would like to add that Dr. Jack Famularo was the most influential teacher in my entire education. As you said, he was warm and friendly, but most importantly a phenomenal, gifted professor who taught me how to problem solve– a gift that provided me with enormous advantages in medical school and even now as a pediatric cardiologist. I will always be indebted to Dr. Jack Famularo. God bless him and his family–his daughters Lisa and Gina were close colleagues of mine at Manhattan College, and they both shared their father’s attributes.
