Simply put, Bennington is looking to plant a Boeing 727 on a fixed bearing 15 feet above the ground, allowing the plane to rotate 360-degrees into the direction of the wind. The 1,200-square feet of interior space would be decorated with any luxurious furnishings according to the taste of the owner.

[JR: Now I realize that "recycling Boeings" isn't a big problem. Nor, does it "solve world hunger". They are risking their own money and not asking for a tax handout. And, who knows, it might be "fun". I think the essence of staying young -- think child like; not teenager -- is to take oneself too seriously. Part of that life long learner thing is to deliberately move outside one's "comfort zone". Move before you're forced to. I'm too comfortable now! Have to move. Can't move. The quicksand is pulling me in. I'm entombed in old paradigms and memes. Run for your life.]

Overland Park, Kan. – Four MAAC men’s and women’s soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were tabbed as candidates today for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the two soccer divisions.

Tennant McVea from Loyola University Maryland and Assaf Sheleg from Saint Peter’s College both earned a spot on the men’s team, while Theresa Ferraina from Loyola and Courtney McMahon from Manhattan College secured a place on the women’s team.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition.

*** and ***

ABOUT THE AWARD

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School™, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards that a senior season can bring. Sportscaster Dick Enberg, Honorary Chairman of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, first conceived the idea of an award for seniors in 2001 in response to the growing trend of men’s basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. The award program has expanded the past two years to include a total of nine NCAA® Division I sports – football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, baseball and softball in addition to men’s and women’s basketball. The award is sponsored by Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA®, and managed by Premier Sports Management. For more information, visit www.seniorclassaward.com.

JEmail: Toner, Mike (MC1972) disagrees with Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957)

Dear F. John,

Re: JEmail: Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957) opines

I believe that Mr. Vaccarino really meant to say “more conservative drivel”. And it certainly was that!

His and other posts in this week’s JJ reminded me of a MAD magazine song parody from the late 50’s (1958, I think). It was titled something like “The Ballad of the John Birch Society” and it began with the lines, “Mine eyes have seen the horror of the coming of the Reds; They are hiding in our closets and beneath our beds…”

I tried a few quick Google searches and couldn’t find the whole lyric.

In any event red baiting was a scare tactic back then and this whole “the government is taking over everything” and “death panels” are its modern day successors.

[JR: None are so blind as those that can't see. The gooferment is, by any measure, larger each administration. And, if it does take a larger role in "health care" or "health care insurance", then it will be in the rationing decision which will kill people. As a rapidly aging Jasper, I'd like the gooferment to work on the VA, Indian, and Medicare. When it gets that right, it can do the rest. But it does make for an interesting weekly newsletter.]

Teresa Mary O’Connell Ennis

September 3, 2009 Teresa Mary O’Connell Ennis passed away peacefully on September 3, 2009, at the Nottingham Residential Health Care Facility in Jamesville, NY.

Terry was born October 21, 1913, in the Bronx, NY. She attended St. Barnabas High School and Hunter College, where she loved to play basketball. She later worked as a junior accountant for J.C. Penney in New York City, where she was a proud member of the bowling team, winning the New York City championship twice. During World War II, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and became one of the first women to graduate from Officers Training School in Des Moines, Iowa. She often spoke proudly of some of her assignments, including a stint working on the Manhattan Project. It was during her army career that Lieutenant Teresa O’Connell met and married Lieutenant Joseph L. Ennis Jr. They resided for 56 years in Riverdale, NY, where Teresa was a communicant of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post. She worked in the library at Manhattan College for 40 years before retiring at age 90. In 2006 Joe and Terry moved from their beloved New York City to reside in the Nottingham Residence for Seniors in Jamesville, NY.

They became members of Holy Cross Catholic Church. They so appreciated the effort that Holy Cross and All Saints made to bring Mass to the residents of the Nottingham. Terry is survived by her daughters, Terry Ann (Jack) Hickey of Skaneateles and Joan Condon of San Diego, CA; her granddaughter, Jennifer O’Connell of San Diego, CA; her grandson, Timothy (Beth) Hickey of Charlottesville, VA; her great-grandson, Brendan Collins of San Diego, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Joe, her husband of 63 years, and by her granddaughter, Laurie Beth Hickey.

The family asks that you offer up a prayer of thanksgiving for the lives of Terry and Joe, who were such an inspiration to so many. There will be no calling hours. A graveside farewell will be held at the convenience of the family. Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

JHQ: “Slave Hunter” Aaron Cohen Wed 9/23 7PM Smith

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/090809_1.shtml

September 8, 2009

Manhattan College Hosts Reading And Discussion With Slave Hunter Author Aaron Cohen

Freedom Week raises awareness of modern-day slavery.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Aaron Cohen, the author of Slave Hunter, will read from his acclaimed book at Manhattan College on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, which is part of Freedom Week, is free and open to the public.

Slave Hunter recounts Cohen’s firsthand experiences as a rocker who became an anti-slavery activist working to free victims from bondage around the world. The incredible odyssey follows him from his California rock-star life in the company of legendary musicians all the way to the war zones, refugee camps and brothels of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In these places, he takes on treacherous rescue missions in search of modern-day slaves and lays bare the secrets behind trafficking networks.

In March 2009, Manhattan was one of many institutions to screen the documentary Call+Response, a film and music collaboration about human trafficking. This semester, the College participates in Freedom Week (Sept. 20-27), an eclectic week of awareness-raising events that delve deep into the issue of modern-day slavery.

Freedom Week is a coalition of abolitionists working to raise awareness about the 27 million people currently enslaved and/or trafficked in the United States and abroad. Its goal is to fight modern-day slavery by inspiring action and providing opportunities for advocacy. For more information, visit www.freedomweeknyc.com.

For more information about this event, please contact campus ministry and social Action at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail scicuto.student@manhattan.edu.

There was one kid who stood out among all the others. The one a coach is always hoping he’ll see: the kid who went after ground balls with a kind of liquid grace, whose hands were sure, who listened. Ernies Alemais was the coach doing the talking. First he talked to the kid and found out he had played four years of Little League but now, at 11, had no team to call his own and said he didn’t have the time to look for one. And then, when the fielding, throwing and hitting drills were done and a six-on-six Whiffle Ball game was, too, Ernies talked to the kid’s grandmother about a better tomorrow.

*** and ***

Next to the field is the oldest public golf course in the country; and next to that are the riding stables. Below both are public pools, a cross-country track, tennis and basketball courts and more baseball fields. A couple of blocks away, tucked off 240th Street, is Gaelic Park, a treasure shared by Manhattan College and the Gaelic Athletic Association.

In the summer, off-the-boat Irish boys, strong, pink necked and pale legged, play terrific games of such primordial Viking sports as Gaelic football and hurling (think of field hockey, lacrosse, and baseball mashed together). Young women play football too, and then pound beers over by the picnic table. The field comes equipped with a bar. When I visited, a few hundred people sat in the bleachers. Across the field in the small press box, an old-timer fixed himself a cup of Barry’s tea and spread butter on a thick slice of Irish Soda Bread. “They ran out of scones today,” he said. A thin man in front of him packed up his laptop, having just finished an article on the women’s football match, and changed into shorts and spikes as he prepared to referee the hurling match.

“We multi-task,” he said.

Former Suffolk legislator John Foley dead at 90
September 8, 2009
By RICK BRAND

*** begin quote ***

John Foley, a pioneer Democrat who served 18 years as a Suffolk legislator – longer than anyone else in his party – battling for labor, education and health causes, has died. He was 90.

Foley died at his Blue Point home surrounded by family at about 11:45 a.m. on Labor Day after ailing in recent months.

Officials in both Democratic and Republican circles say Foley worked to have government play a role in providing services for people in need, such as building a new county nursing home that now bears his name.

“John Foley was a public service legend the likes of which we will never see again,” said Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, “He was a super-imposing figure . . . and had even a bigger heart to go along with it.”

“He always tried to be the teacher, educating us on his point of view,” said Legis. Edward Romaine (R-Center Moriches). “He always thought about the working man and woman and the struggles they face. He tried to make government work for them.”

{Extraneous Deleted}

Foley fought to protect workers’ rights, expand funding for county health centers, preschoolers with learning disabilities and improved mental health services. He favored saving open space and shutting the Shoreham nuclear plant. Foley was an advocate of education, serving 12 years on the Bayport-Blue Point school board, including a stint as president. He was a 25-year member of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES board of education, and a trustee of Suffolk Community College.

Born in Manhattan, Foley, one of three children, graduated from LaSalle High School and Manhattan College with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1940. He graduated from Columbia College in 1943 with a masters in history and education. After college, he served stateside in the Army medical corps during World War II.

Other survivors include his other sons, Dennis, of Sayville; Michael, of Connecticut; daughters Mary Ann Hughes, of Lynbrook, and Patricia Kuhn, of Sayville, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A wake will be held at Robertaccio Funeral Home in Patchogue Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at Our Lady of the Snow Parish on Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Blue Point Cemetery. IBC Advanced Alloys Appoints Exelon Generation Vice President James Malone to its Nuclear Fuels Advisory Board
By: Marketwire .
Sep. 9, 2009 09:30 AM

*** begin quote ***

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — (Marketwire) — 09/09/09 — September 9, 2009 – IBC Advanced Alloys Corp. (TSX VENTURE: IB) (”IBC” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that it has appointed James P. Malone, formerly Vice President, Nuclear Fuels for Exelon Generation (VP, NF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Exelon Corp., to the IBC nuclear fuels advisory board. The advisory board’s role is to assist the Company with its strategic plan to develop and commercialize the nuclear fuel technology currently being undertaken by Purdue and Texas A&M Universities in partnership with IBC.

Mr. Malone has more than 40 years of experience in the nuclear power industry, focused on the technical, economic and planning aspects of nuclear fuels. At Exelon the VP, NF is responsible for their nuclear fuel cycle activities, including procurement, safeguards, economics, and fuel cycle cost. Exelon operates the largest nuclear reactor fleet in the nation and the third largest fleet in the world. Exelon’s ten stations, with 17 reactors, represent approximately 20 percent of the U.S. nuclear industry’s power capacity.

In addition, the VP, NF is involved with core design, safety analysis and plant technical support including fuel reliability, component procurement strategy, high-level waste and spent fuel management. The VP, NF also guides the interactions of the nuclear fuels staff in the regulatory, political and public acceptance areas.

Prior to Exelon, he was a vice president at NAC International where he participated in fuel cycle consulting including fuel reliability via NAC’s Stoller Nuclear Fuel Division. Mr. Malone spent several years at SWUCO, Inc. as a SWU broker. Prior to SWUCO he was manager of economic analysis at Yankee Atomic. Mr. Malone began his career as an engineer in the utility reactor core analysis section of the nuclear engineering department of United Nuclear Corporation.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering (nuclear) from Manhattan College in the Bronx, New York, and received an MBA from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, with a Graduate School of Business Award for Academic Excellence.

“I am very excited to be a part of IBC’s nuclear fuels initiative,” said Mr. Malone. “I know from long experience that reactor safety and fuel performance are two of the most important issues facing the nuclear industry today affecting consumers, fabricators and regulators alike. IBC’s advanced UO2 – BeO high conductivity fuel,” continued Malone, “has significant positive implications for the nuclear power industry and I am look forward to being a part of this important industry initiative.”

“We are very pleased to have Jim as a member of IBC’s advisory board,” said Anthony Dutton, President and CEO of IBC. “IBC has identified a significant commercial opportunity to make a positive contribution to a more efficient, economically sound and safer nuclear power industry. We look forward to working with Mr. Malone,” continued Dutton, “with his deep industry experience as we advance this initiative for both IBC and the nuclear fuels industry.”

IBC signed a collaborative research agreement with Purdue University in August 2008 to advance the university’s existing nuclear fuels research program and to develop a new type of beryllium oxide enhanced nuclear fuel that has higher thermal conductivity and is therefore potentially longer lasting, more efficient and safer than current uranium-based nuclear fuels. The objective of the research is to commercially develop a nuclear fuel for optimal use in both current and future nuclear reactors.

IBC will grant incentive stock options to Mr. Malone, for the purchase of 100,000 common shares of the Company, at an exercise price of $0.15. The options have a five-year term and vest in accordance with the policies of the TSX Venture Exchange. The options are being granted pursuant to the terms of the Company’s 2008 stock option plan and are subject to TSX Venture Exchange policies and approval.

About IBC Advanced Alloys Corp.

JEmail: Helm, Robert (MC1951) opines on “Swine Flu”

Ladies and Gentlemen:

   1. No POLITICS !!!!!!!!

2. Just your health…The “Swine Flu” epidemic is not life threstening and the vacine is untested and possibly dangerous and may even be Life Threatening. Big “PHARMA” is behind WHO and CDC and their “The Sky is Falling” pronouncements !!!!!!!

   3. I will not have this vacine…and I will be 82 next month and I have been in ill-health these past 2 years (caused by cavalier Rxs and incompetent personnel). I may not even have a plain “flu vacine”…as no one has foretold my demise from a cold as yet !

Gravely and sincerely,
Bob Helm

[JR: I am glad to hear from Bob. And, some what understand his frustration with the "witch doctors" of our time.]

[Disclaimer: Jasper Jottings is not where you should be getting your medical advice. Not the FDA either, but Bob said "no politics". Seems though "medicine" is very "political".]

JEmail: Moore, Kevin (MC1980) re: funeral Mass Br. Luke Salm

Dear CIC,

My wife Susan and I were able to attend both the wake and funeral Mass for my uncle, Br. Luke Salm on 9/04/09 and 9/05/09, respectively. Both the wake and funeral were well attended with many of Br. Luke’s confreres, students, and family able to attend. The Mass was particularly moving, with a very cordial welcome from Dr. Brennan O’Donnell, the new president of the college. The celebrant was Bishop Paul Bootkoski, class of 1975, and the readings were read by Br. Thomas Scanlan and Br. Luke sister, Cecilia. The homilist was Br. William Mann, the President of St. Mary’s College who gave a beautiful reflection on Br. Luke’s achievements and place in the history of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. It was very nice once again to be on campus, which changed considerably since the late 1970s.

Sincerely,
Kevin Moore

[JR: Thanks for sharing. Tough day for you, the family, and MC.]

JFound: Lyons, Michael J. [MC1993 RIP] remember amoung those lost on 9/11/01

9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Michael J. Lyons. At 32, Mr. Lyons had grown up to be a firefighter himself with Squad 41 in the Bronx, and before that, with Engine Company 44 on the Upper East Side. But Mr. Lyons was good not only at putting out fires. A graduate of Manhattan College, he worked as an engineer on the side to make extra money. His other jobs included fixing roofs, driving a hot-dog truck and taking counter orders at the Yonkers deli where he met his future wife, Elaine (she was a waitress there). “He was always working,” she said. “There would be spans of two days when I wouldn’t see him.”Mr. Lyons had started slowing down, though, after his daughter Caitlyn was born 17 months ago on his birthday. He never had the chance to meet his second daughter, Mary, who was born last month and named after his late mother. Mrs. Lyons gave the baby the middle name Michael.

[JR: Nice to see some one remember. All the Jaspers lost that day are forever in my heart. And, on the listed on the site. If the terrorists had chosen 9/10, I might have been among the lost. I still think we should have IMMEDIATELY rebuilt the WTC one story higher. I like the middle finger design. Some how, we, as a country, have lost our way. Venial corrupt politicians, somnambulate citizens, and an union dominated education system have led us down the path to failure. And, our failures, in so many dimensions, embolden our enemies. 9/11/01 was the turning point. The pivot point. Enemies struck us; we dithered. We have a lot to be sad about. Not the least of which is a lot of good people whose lives were taken and families ruined. Dona Nobis Pacem.]

Guest Blog: After Lehman and Stanford, Dealing With a Tainted Resume

By WSJ Staff
Regina Itliong was an executive assistant at Stanford Financial Group before being laid off in March 2009. Previously, Ms. Itliong, 29, worked as client administrator for Neuberger Berman LLC and spent almost four years at HSBC Bank. She graduated from Manhattan College with an undergraduate degree in psychology in 2000. Ms. Itliong lives in West New York, New Jersey.

*** begin quote ***

After losing my position at Neuberger Berman which was under the Lehman Brothers umbrella, I was hired at a small investment bank in October 2008. I was grateful that my Series 7 license was taken on and that my months of study would not go to waste. I accepted an executive assistant role for the investment-banking technology team — relieved like the rest of my newly hired colleagues to find a place to ride out the recession. The feeling was short-lived. The boutique investment bank I joined was Stanford Financial, now splashed with scandal as its owner was accused of running a Ponzi scheme.

As time passes, interviews are becoming easier. Because of the financial meltdown, the majority of interviewers are no longer as judgmental. I never wanted to lose my former position, but the situation is beyond one’s control. Like the rest of us support candidates out there, I’m just looking for a job — and the objective of every interview is to get an offer.

ENDNOTE: Franz Jägerstätter

http://www.lifenews.com/state4338.html

*** begin quote ***

“As a Roman Catholic institution, Belmont Abbey College is not able to and will not offer nor subsidize medical services that contradict the clear teaching of the Catholic Church,” Belmont Abbey president William Thierfelder said at the time. “There was no other course of action possible if we were to operate in fidelity to our mission and to our identity as a Catholic college.”

*** end quote ***

Catholics better get ready; Obama’s “health whatever” seeks to expand abortion “rights”. No conscience execption. No exceptions for Catholic institutions or people.

What is more objectionable is that we will be forced to pay for, through our taxes, something that we find morally objectionable in part for all. Will this be the straw that breaks our backs? Will Catholics finally stand up and “just say no”. Will we go to jail rather than submit to an immoral law. Remember Pastor Martin Niemîller! Remember Franz Jägerstätter! Remember the death camps!

Follow your conscience.

It’s going to be hard. May all my challenges be small; may all yours be too.
