Maltese, Serphin R.

Born in Corona, New York on December 7, 1932, Senator Maltese graduated from P.S. 63, JHS 64 and Stuyvesant High School. He went to Manhattan College on a Regents scholarship, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was awarded a War Service Scholarship and received his LL.B. and J.D. degrees from Fordham University Law School. Senator Maltese was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1963 and admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Senator Maltese is an Infantry Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, Korean War Veteran’s Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Vietnam Veterans of America. His active role in veterans affairs prompted his appointment during his first term as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Veterans. He is currently a member of the American Legion’s National Legislative Council.

Article I wrote for Manhattan College Quadrangle (Hartford mention)

Please find an article that I just wrote for the most recent edition of my school’s (for the next weeks that is) newspaper the Manhattan College Quadrangle. This article was in response to one written claiming the MTA is one most corrupt organizations out there whose service is despicable.

The reason I put it in here is because I throw in a reference at the end to public transportation in Hartford. I have been been proven wrong though by a recent blog post though that discusses how it is in fact possible to live car free in Hartford. And I have come to agree, BUT it should be so much more easier. There needs to be much better bus service and tons of new routes. This is something I must save for after I graduate in 2 weeks, when I will have plenty of time to discuss. Please read though! I have bolded the Hartford part.

I received this sad news today from a mutual friend:

Tommy McCormick, formerly of Payson Avenue, GSS 1956, Manhattan Prep 1960 and Manhattan College 1964.

After a long illness, Tom McCormick died yesterday at a hospice in Bethlehem, Pa. A memorial service will be held some time in the Spring. In the meantime, messages of condolence can be sent to: Mrs. Barbara McCormick,1898 Gregory Place, Hellertown Pa., 18055-3410. In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to Tom’s favorite charity i.e. Dream Come True, PO box 21167, Lehigh Valley, PA. 18002 or directly to their web site at DreamComeTrue.org. This charity helps sick kids get their wishes fulfilled.

Dr Campbell is the Roy J. Carver Biomedical Research Chair in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Head of the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, and Director of the Senator Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center at The University of Iowa. Dr Campbell also holds joint appointments as a professor in the Departments of Neurology and Internal Medicine. In 1989, he was appointed an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and in 2004 he received his fourth five-year renewal with HHMI.

Dr Campbell is internationally recognized for his fundamental contributions to muscular dystrophy research. For the past 15 years, Dr Campbell and his colleagues have actively investigated the molecular pathogenesis of muscular dystrophy. Dr Campbell’s research is funded by a variety of organizations, and the scientific accomplishments of his laboratory have resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to receiving many awards for his outstanding research, Dr Campbell is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr Campbell earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Manhattan College, his master’s degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and his PhD in Biophysics from the Department of Radiation Biology and Biophysics at the University of Rochester. He completed his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr David MacLennan at the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, University of Toronto, before moving to Iowa in 1981.

David C. Momrow, School of Public Health Distinguished Public Service Award. Morrow, the senior vice president of Cancer Control for the American Cancer Society, is responsible for Prevention & Detection, Patient & Family Service initiatives, and Advocacy & Government Relations for the states of New York and New Jersey. Prior to joining the Cancer Society in 1999, he worked for the NYS Department of Health for more than 30 years and contributed in the development of the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Adult Health and served as its first director. The Division was created to address prevention and control of the leading causes of death and disability for all New Yorkers.

Momrow was one of the founders of the Association of State and Territorial Chronic Disease Program Directors and later served as its president. More recently he served as chair, Advisory Committee to CDC on the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

Momrow received his Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Manhattan College. He and his wife, Estelle, have three children and five (soon to be eight) grandchildren.

Scatterbomb http://www.myspace.com/scatterbomb needs a coach for the Spring Semester.

I am unable to continue coaching Manhattan College’s improv troupe Scatterbomb and am helping them find a replacement coach for Spring 2007.

This is a bit of a situation, so here are the details…

   * You’d really have to be available once a week, every week, from about 7:30-10:30. They probably won’t know which day they’ll have rehearsal until the semester starts. You can’t really miss rehearsals, seriously, but if you do you’d either have to find a sub (and pay him out of your own pocket – see below) or hope they can make up a different week.

   * Manhattan College is on 242nd Street, the final stop on the 1 (it’s a pretty safe area). It takes me about 1.5 hours to get home in the LES. So the commute is a bit of a pain and can be difficult if you live in Queens.

   * You’ll be working with a mix of veterans and people who’ve only been doing it for one semester, so it’s also a fun teaching challenge.

   * Because of these factors, the pay is more than the standard coaching rate. You’ll probably be paid monthly, and will have to fill out tax forms, as you’ll receive a check from the school.

You’ve really gotta be reliable and committed to this gig through the entire semester. These are a great group of people, and I want them to have the best coach possible.

Thomas R. McCormick

Thomas R. McCormick, 67, of Gregory Place, Hellertown, Pennsylvania, died January 3, 2010 at the VNA Hospice House of St. Lukes. He was the loving husband of Barbara (McQuillan) McCormick for over 40 years. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Raymond and Muriel (Walsh) McCormick. He attended the Good Shepherd School, Manhattan Prep, and Manhattan College, where he made friendships that lasted his lifetime.

He was a parole officer for the State of New York for over 30 years before retiring, having been cited for meritorious service. He formerly resided in New Fairfield, Connecticut, where he raised his family and served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts. Family and friends were most important to Tom. He loved to read, travel, hike, and play cards. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors: Tom will be lovingly remembered by his caring wife; son, Thomas, and his wife Allison, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, son, Brian of Brooklyn, New York; grandchildren, Tommy, Millie, and Teddy; brother, Raymond, and his wife, Margaret, of Melbourne, Florida; and cousin, Jeanne of New Canaan, Connecticut.

Joseph J. Seebode M.D.

Joseph J. Seebode, M.D., 80, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2010, in Cedar Grove, N.J., surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at 9 a.m. from Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. A Funeral Mass is at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 339 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Caldwell. Visitation will be on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Dr. Seebode was born in Yonkers, N.Y. He attended Manhattan College on a full athletic scholarship for track and field. Upon graduation, he attended Georgetown University School of Medicine, receiving both his M.D. and a master’s degree in physiology. Dr. Seebode served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, where he was assigned as a physician aboard a military transport ship in the North Atlantic. After completing his military service and medical training in urology, he became an assistant professor in Surgery at Seton Hall School of Medicine. Soon after, Dr. Seebode was appointed to chief, section of urology at UMDNJ-NJMS, and director of the urology residency program. He became a full professor in surgery, training over 75 residents in urology. Dr. Seebode received the Humanities Fellowship Award, and the Harris L. Willits Chair in Urology, which was the first chair ever received at UMDNJ.

In addition to medicine and teaching, Dr. Seebode was an accomplished fisherman, best known for his love of the waters of Block Island, R.I. He was a self-taught painter, an avid gardener, and a competitive tennis player. He was a religious man, and an active member of his church, where he was a Eucharistic minister, a Pre-Cana instructor, and a member of the Cornerstone group.

Dr. Seebode was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Vera Seebode, and his sister, Joan Sheehy, and her son, Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Anna M. Seebode (Dunne); children, Joseph and wife, Joanne (Lystash), Dr. Elizabeth Seebode-Zazzali and husband, Dr. Peter Zazzali, Christopher and wife, Tracey (Bergwall), David Seebode, and Mary Seebode, R.N.; six grandchildren, Joseph and John Paul Seebode, Peter and Jonathan Zazzali, and Julia and Christopher Seebode. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Hill, and six nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Dr. Seebode’s honor to the National Kidney Foundation , 30 E. 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10016, and to Nyumbani, a children AIDS hospital in Kenya, 3050 K Street NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20007-5108.

I was fourteen, riding the IRT subway in New York City. It was mid-day. I was returning home from spending the night with a girlfriend and was carrying my little blue overnight case. I found myself sitting across from where a handsome young man stood. I felt myself blushing as he stared at me for a half hour or longer, trying to catch my eye.

As luck would have it, we got off on the same stop. I would have to take a bus home from the train station. The young man stopped me and asked me my name and whether I wanted a ride.

I can’t remember his name. He was about 6 feet tall and blonde. I remember his age; he was 21 years old, definitely an “older man.” I also clearly recall that he was going to Manhattan College. Most importantly – he had the first motorcycle …scooter actually…that I ever rode on: a small blue Honda.

He took my suitcase and held it as I climbed on behind him. With one arm around his waist and the other clutching my small overnight bag, we took off.

The five minute ride to my house was terrifying, exhilarating and addictive.

We only went out a couple of times. I lied about my age telling him I was 17. When he figured out (it only took one kiss) that I was terribly young and naïve, our budding romance ended quickly. He was a gentleman.

Romona Angela Pezzella, 45, of Montclair, died on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at her home.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m., in The Woman’s Club of Upper Montclair, 200 Cooper Ave.

Mrs. Pezzella was born in London, England, to Zilma Pezzella and the late Francis Pezzella. The family moved to the United States in 1966.

She grew up in South Ozone Park, N.Y., and graduated magna cum laude from Manhattan College in 1986 with a degree in chemical engineering. She earned her master’s degree the following year. Upon graduation, she started work at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in New York City.

During her 20-year career at USEPA, she managed many high-priority environmental cleanup projects, including the Montclair, Glen Ridge, and West Orange Superfund site where she was the project manager responsible for remediating over 100 homes and returning residents to properties free of contamination.

Mrs. Pezzella moved to Montclair in 1992.

She was a member of Friends of Acadia National Park, the Glen Ridge Country Club, avid perennial-shade gardener, and was an active parent at Edgemont Montessori Elementary School.

Mrs. Pezzella was predeceased by a brother, Bernard Pezzella. She is survived by her husband, Marc Mizrahi; son, Owen Mizrahi; daughter, Maia Mizrahi; mother, Zilma Pezzella; sisters, Marlene Matulac and her husband Derrick Matulac, Monica Rodriguez, and Gloria McBride; brothers, Ronald Pezzella, and Frank Pezzella.

NYPD inspector helped foil ‘Mad Bomber’

   STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — John T. O’Brien of Prince’s Bay, a decorated World War II veteran, retired police inspector and lawyer, died yesterday in St. Albans Veterans Hospital in Queens. His age was 85.

   Born is the Bronx, he was brought to Grant City at age 5. He attended St. Christopher’s School graduated from St. Peter’s Boys High School, New Brighton. He later continued his education, embracing a variety of interests and rising to the top of more than one profession.

   “John was very, very professional; he loved academia, wrote several books that were published, and was very fun-loving,” said Lucille O’Brien, his wife of 60 years.

   An avid athlete, Mr. O’Brien played on the New Dorp Queens football team before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943, at the height of World War II. As a 19-year-old private with the Second Marine Division, he was severely wounded in his left arm during the Battle of Tarawa on Betio Island in the Pacific on Thanksgiving Day. He received the Purple Heart.

   After spending two years recovering in naval hospitals, Mr. O’Brien was discharged in 1945. The following year, he decided to join the city Police Department.

   Life-threatening situations didn’t end for Mr. O’Brien following the war. His police career proved dangerous, as well.

   When “The Mad Bomber,” George Metesky, stashed a bomb inside the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue in 1956, Mr. O’Brien was lauded for removing the live explosive on Christmas Eve.

   He received the Police Department’s second-highest honor, the Exceptional Merit Decoration, from former Police Commissioner Stephen Kennedy.

   “I like to do things on holidays; this way, I can remember them,” he told the Advance.

   After a leave of absence to finish college and law school, Mr. O’Brien returned to the NYPD in 1950. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Manhattan College in the Bronx in 1948.

   He wed Lucille De Rose in 1949; it had been love at first sight when they were introduced a year earlier, she said.

   “He was gorgeous in his Marine uniform.”

   Mr. O’Brien earned his juris doctor from New York Law School, Manhattan; his master’s degree in public administration from Baruch College, Manhattan, and his doctorate in public administration from New York University.

   In 1970, Mr. O’Brien became a deputy inspector with the NYPD, from which he took a leave of absence to serve as director of the New Brunswick (N.J.) Police Department.

   He resigned from the NYPD in 1972 and, in 1975, became the director of the Northern Virginia Police Academy.

   Mr. O’Brien also spent 10 years as a professor of law and criminal justice at the New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury, L.I., and at the same time practiced law from his former residence on Grymes Hill.

   Mr. O’Brien remained faithful to the Marine Corps until his death. He was one of the founders of the Marine Corps League on Staten Island, and in 2007 the organization named its pavilion in Sunnyside for him.

   He was also the consummate family man, said his wife.

   Mr. O’Brien was a mentor to his adult grandchildren, who would quote him and seek his advice, she said.

“He was a wonderful role model. They became great achievers because of his guidance,” Mrs. O’Brien said. “What a career he had, what a fulfilled life. He’s done everything so well.”

   Mr. O’Brien was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1953 and his son, Patrick J., in 1994.

   In addition to his wife, Lucille, Mr. O’Brien is survived by two brothers, James and Joseph, and four grandchildren.

   The funeral will be Saturday from the Harmon South Shore Funeral Home, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, both Pleasant Plains.

The April session of the monthly Green Building Forum will set the stage for the May tour of the green buildings in the Bronx. Speakers representing Bronx housing & community development organizations will talk about where the Bronx was before the recent rebirth, how so much of the redevelopment of the Bronx came to embrace green building, and how the current economic environment is expected to affect the future development of the Bronx.

Reilly has worked on neighborhood and housing issues since 1975, first with the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition as a community organizer and for the last 29 years as the Executive Director of the Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation in the Bronx. The Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation was established by local tenant and neighborhood leaders from their Northwest Bronx community in 1980 to prevent housing deterioration and abandonment. Today the Housing Corporation provides management and oversight for 95 community-controlled apartment buildings with more than 2700 apartments and conducts housing renovation and new construction. Mr. Reilly is a graduate of Manhattan College and a lifetime resident of the Bronx in New York City. He resides in the Bedford Park section with his wife and has two daughters.

Gov.-elect Chris Christie Friday announced additional appointments to the staffs of the attorney general and the governor’s office, including the director of law and criminal justice and the authorities unit.

Robert Hanna will serve as director of the Division of Law in the Attorney General’s office under Paula Dow. Hanna is currently director of the Newark law-firm, Gibbons PC and previously served as an assistant U.S. Attorney for 16 years.

Hanna, 51, of Madison, joined the Gibbons firm in May 2006 after serving 16 years as an assistant U.S. attorney in Newark. In private practice, Hanna has represented clients in wide variety of complex white-collar criminal matters, civil matters and attorney ethics matters. He also has served as a court-appointed receiver.

Hanna joined the Civil Division of the U.S. attorney’s office in May 1990. There he handled a wide array of affirmative and defensive civil matters, including appeals, on behalf of the federal government. His affirmative civil matters included a civil RICO action to rid Atlantic City’s Local 54 of hotel workers union of Philadelphia La Cosa Nostra domination; anti-fraud injunction actions against direct mail and telemarketing fraud operations; a novel CERCLA environmental penalty action on behalf of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and False Claims Act affirmative actions.

Hanna’s significant defensive civil matters included defending the U.S. attorney, federal judges and other federal officials in civil rights actions; significant Freedom of Information Act litigation; opposing the town of Secaucus’s attempt to halt major federal rail transportation project; and emergent applications by losing bidders on government contracts.

In 1997 Hanna joined the Frauds Division at the U.S. attorney’s office, and later served in a variety of roles, including as chief of the Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit and Criminal Health Care Fraud Coordinator. Among his many white-collar criminal matters, Hanna was the lead prosecutor in the prosecutions of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and major pharmaceutical concern Bristol-Myers Squibb. As a federal prosecutor, Hanna also tried complex, lengthy securities and health care fraud criminal cases. Throughout his career as an assistant U.S. attorney, Hanna worked closely with representatives of a wide range of federal and state agencies.

Hanna graduated from Manhattan College in 1980 with a degree in business administration degree. And earned his law degree at Fordam University Law School.

Athletic Director John D’Argenio announced that Dennis Bates has been hired to the new position of associate athletic director of operations at Siena effective immediately. Bates served as assistant athletic director at the College from 2005 to 2008.

“I am extremely excited to return to Siena as the associate athletic director of operations,” Bates said. “My return to Siena has been received with open arms. This new position will help bolster the internal operations of the athletic department by combining fiscal and facilities management under one area.”

Has your life turned out to be all you expected? I’m interested in what you all think… Here’s the scenerio:

Picture yourself at your favorite age (for me, it was 17). Think about where you were then: your views, your attitude on life, your friends (Were you shallow? Were you quick to judge? Were you into a specific genre of music/movies/TV? Did you have a specific hobby (or boyfriend!?!) you “couldn’t live without”? Did you want to become a mother? Did you want to be a lawyer? President?

CONTEST DESCRIPTION: OK. Now imagine that you went to bed one night (at that age) and when you woke up, it was January of 2010. Tell me what you see, what you feel, what you think. Are you happy with where you are?

PRIZE: I am not giving away any broadway show tickets, I am not giving away any kitchen sets, I am not giving away any birthday parties. Actually, what I AM giving away is something much more valuable. Let’s see if we can truly get to know each other. More importantly, let’s get to know OURSELVES.

HOW TO ENTER: Simply think about the scenerio I shared, and reply with your thoughts. I’ll start below. Follow my lead.

OK, so I fell asleep one night in 1992, when I was 17 years old. A senior in high school, dating my childhood sweetheart since we were 15, planning on starting the pre-med program at Manhattan College the following September on my road to becoming a pediatrician. I wanted 2.4 children, with a house in Westchester with a white picket fence and a dog named Max. Stephen and I would live happily ever after.

When I woke up, it was 2010. My goodness! I was much heavier, had much longer hair, and where was Stephen? The man in the bed next to me was OLD, like 40! I was about to run, when I looked at the wedding photo above the bed and realized he was my husband! Confused, I continued to check out my surroundings. I walked around the apartment (seems I am still living in the same neighborhood I grew up in? What happened to the house in the suburbs with the fence and the dog and the 2.4 children?) and saw another bedroom. There was a little girl sleeping in the bed, who, ironically, looked a heck of a lot like I did when I was about 7. Was she mine? WOW! She was cute

I kept walking and came upon another bedroom with THREE (whoa!) cribs in it! I went and looked into each one, and the three little boys I saw were so adorable! Who’s kids were these and where was their mother? I watched each of them sleep for a little while, thinking how lucky the mother was, and trying to understand why I felt this bond with them, like they were mine. Were they? FOUR? FOUR KIDS?

When everyone started to wake up and I learned a bit more about myself, I realized that I was very happily married to Paul (after divorcing Stephen), and what was important to me in 1992 meant absolutely nothing to me now that I had this man and these four children in my life.

I am NOT a pediatrician (well, a mom is a pediatrician to some degree, right?), I am a family therapist on a LOOONG maternity leave, and I am currently working from home as a City Ambassador for MomsLikeMe.com (a concept that in 1992 would have made NO sense… Internet Mommy? What was that?)

I can say that God has given me much more than I ever imagined from 1992. I would still LOVE to have our own house, not necessarily in suburbia! I am happy with what I have been given, and I recognized how blessed I truly am.

State Supreme Court justice sworn in

It was equal parts decorum and levity yesterday in the Music Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden as Staten Island’s first-ever administrative judge was sworn in for a second term on the state Supreme Court bench.

The ceremony for Justice Philip G. Minardo was witnessed by a large crowd of friends, family, lawyers and dignitaries at the special session of state Supreme Court.

Some seemed intent on a good roast.

State Supreme Court justice Anthony Giacobbe, who served as emcee, welcomed everyone to Minardo’s “coronation – I mean – induction,” but also said, he admired the judge’s posession of “that quality, to really administer justice.”

Minardo, who started his career in the district attorney’s office with Giacobbe and practiced law for more than 30 years, promised he would continue to give everyone “their day in court,” and said of Richmond County, “We have, I believe, the finest bench in the state of New York.”

The event took place just two days after Minardo had sworn in Orlando (Lindy) Marrazzo as a judge in Civil Court, and Marrazzo returned the favor, reveling in what he said would likely be his only chance to “order” his more senior colleague to the other side of the Bible for an oath. Islanders Mario Mattei and Karen Wolff, two jurists newly minted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, joined the large group of judges in attendance.

The patrician-looking Minardo ran unopposed and was endorsed by all five of the Island’s major political parties this fall. He noted that his second 14-year term will see him attain “the constitutionally senile age of 70.”

The relaxed proceedings began with the approach to the Music Hall stake, which was interrupted with a hug from toddler-grandson Philip III. With his family – including 90-year-old mother Mary Minardo – looking on, Minardo thanked his parents for “doing the everyday chores in an extraordinary way.” Son, John Minardo, who made remarks as part of the ceremony, noted his father’s “gruff exterior” but also his diligence and dedication to fairness.

Jonathan Behrins, president of the Richmond County Bar Association, quoted famous court-centric movies like “My Cousin Vinny” and “A Few Good Men,” saying they typify Minardo’s contention that “Judges are just lawyers in robes.”
