POSITRACTION: Cats were their children

http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2010/01/17/her_last_gift_a_little_house_in_newton_just_for_the_cats

The Boston Globe
Her last gift: A little house in Newton, just for the cats
By Jenifer B. McKim
Globe Staff / January 17, 2010

*** begin quote ***

NEWTON – Muriel Bayne’s love for her cats was well known on Staniford Street in Auburndale. Neighborhood children called her the “Cat Lady’’ and Bayne’s pets were often seen contentedly peering from a picture window at the small ranch house where she lived for decades.

But Bayne, 77, had a weak heart. And after her husband’s death in 2001, she started worrying about what would happen to her cats when she died. So she penned a will, leaving them the home and a $300,000 trust. Weeks later, Bayne’s heart gave out.

That’s how Shadow, Dolly, Lady, and Spot became trust fund cats.

*** and ***

Khidhir, who eventually bought the house for $480,000 and moved in late last year, enjoyed hearing about its offbeat history from his real estate agent.

He still keeps a wooden plank hanging in the kitchen that lists the cats’ names – in Bayne’s handwriting – below the title, “Cat ventory.’’ She used it to track their whereabouts inside and out.

“Part of me felt sad that this old couple who lived in Newton had no children to pass on their assets,’’ Khidhir said. “At the same time, I think their cats were their children.’’

*** end quote ***

[JR: Sad, pathetic, tragic, epic. If we were a "smarter" people, and not letting government run our lives, we would have had a way to match these people with the numerous children needing care. Even in later life. OK, maybe God, she screwed up. But "we" should have been organized to "fix" it with a composite family. At least, her estate went to charity. So sad! Can us Jaspers do better?]

[JR: Great. You can "self-serve" your jottings subscription unless you need help? As usual, I'm going to give you my "lecture" about why you should have an "eternal" email address. Not related to your Internet Service Provider.]

<begin lecture>

http://reinkefaceslife.com/2009/03/02/service-one-example-of-why-you-should-not-use-your-isps-email-address/

SERVICE: One example of why you SHOULD NOT use your ISP’s email address

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,21951743
[E-mail] Someone else closed my email accounts
from Comcast HSI forum – dslreports.com community

I’m sure that there are other ISP horor stories.

Why put yourself in that position in the first place?

My Service Provider  —  http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 — for example, I could really care less if you use them, if you do I think I get fifty cents — wonder if I’ve ever got a commission ever? — offers for 12 $/year to provide you with email, a domain name, and bunch of other stuff.

So why would you EVER put your email, and web site, at risk?

You can guess why the ISP “gives” you anything for “free”. It’s too lock you in and make it difficult if not impossible to move.

Now, at the very least, you should have “just — another — email — address” registered at Gmail and use it externally. You can forward “just — another — email — address” to “my — supposedly — freeeee — isp — email — address”. You can use IMAP or POP to do the forward. And, GMAIL will filter spam better than anyone.

Do it my way and people, who have your email address, never lose you. Especially, the people, who got it from someone else and you don’t know. Do it yours and you’ve disappeared!

<end lecture>

[JR: Running Jasper Jottings all these years, it's amazing how many people "get lost". Argh! It'll be better when MC pushes out @alum.manhattan.edu email addresses again. It's gmail in disguise and has all the features of gmail. Wonder how many people will be confused by it?]

Esposito’s Woodworking offers cabinets, custom designs
Milton business is keen on green
By Kevin Spence

*** begin quote ***

Attracted by the growth of the area, Anthony Esposito moved from New Jersey to apply his talents as a master craftsman for Cape Region homes. Esposito, 28, moved to Milton into his family’s Creek Falls Farm home – the site known as the old Hudson farm – where out back, he turned a former farm building into a woodworking studio.

In 2004, Esposito graduated from Manhattan College with an engineering degree complementing his woodworking skills, but, while in college, he also picked up the carpentry trade. He specializes in cabinet installation and finishing, which makes good use of his engineering skills.

“Finish carpentry and cabinets go hand-in-hand,” he said. “But kitchens and built-in cabinets – that’s my niche.”

He also makes custom-made furniture, including tiled desks, engraved wine tables and tack trunks.

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) and the canary

John: Here are a few more cartoons, produced in collaboration with my friend Lonnie Mussell, of Stockbridge, Georgia. I like the “canary” cartoon the best. Interestingly, both Lonnie and my other recent collaborator, Fred Rodriguez, are independent businessman from Georgia, and both in the construction business. Small businesses, as you well know, are the main source of new jobs in the American economy, and small businessmen seem to be the group who are most frightened by Obama’s economic policies. (Lonnie also is very actively involved with supporting a mission for orphans in Kenya, so he’s someone with a good heart as well as a businessman.) I’ll be back in touch by next week. I should have a few more cartoons by then. Thanks, Jerry Breen Jasper ‘71

JHQ: Traditional Ethiopian Folk Art

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/020410_1.shtml

February 4, 2010

Exhibition Of Early 20th-Century Traditional Ethiopian Folk Art At Manhattan College

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Thirteen pieces of traditional Ethiopian folk art by the artist W.F. Mamo are on display from now until June in the Lobby of Manhattan College’s O’Malley Library. This exhibition, which is open all day, is open to the public and is possible thanks to the generous gift of Arbab Ghatak, who donated nineteen pieces of early twentieth-century traditional Ethiopian folk art to Manhattan College.

Ethiopia has been a Christian country since the fourth century, thus Ethiopian culture is closely tied to Christianity and has a rich and varied tradition of religious art. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, however, European travelers to Ethiopia created an interest in nonreligious art.

The paintings displayed at Manhattan College, which are on cotton duck canvas, depict such scenes and people as Ethiopian royal celebration, the meeting of Queen Makeda of Sheba with King Soloman, simple village life, St. Tekle Haimanot, St. George slaying the dragon, and pilgrims going in reed boats to visit the Ark of the Covenant.

Manhattan College Junior, Abraham Asfaw, provided translation of the Amharic in each of these paintings. His translations supply viewers with the stories contained within the paintings.

A selection of photographs and memorabilia from the Christian Brothers’ mission in Ethiopia will also be on display.

For more information on this event, please contact sandra.emmerson@manhattan.edu or call (718)862-7329.

Gerard “Jerry” Bierfeldt

EAST FISHKILL – Gerard “Jerry” Bierfeldt of East Fishkill, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City, surrounded by his loving family. He was 59. Jerry was born in the Bronx, NY on October 28, 1950 and was one of four children born to Jack and Joan Bierfeldt.

His love, care, and generous spirit served as an example to everyone he came across. On June 24, 1979 he married Janet Milani and together had three wonderful children. Jerry was an avid golfer who enjoyed sports, reading, and spending time with his family. His favorite athlete was Arnold Palmer. He was described by his brother Jimmy as a man who “had what he wanted and wanted what he had.” Jerry Bierfeldt was content with what the Lord had provided him, a loving family who looked up to him and to whom he could devote his time. His wife recalls he would have been happy with a steak or a hot dog, just so long as his children had enough to eat. He had a long career in the Social Security Administration, first in the Bronx, New York from 74-82, then at the Appeals Council in Arlington, Virginia until 1988 and then in White Plains, New York until 2010. Jerry was a dedicated and hard-worker in every task he undertook, whether in the office or at home.

His wife and children will affectionately remember him for his caring spirit, his positive attitude, and his collection of quirks. The stories used to describe Jerry Bierfeldt’s life would span a number of pages. Growing up as a supermarket cashier, he once received a counterfeit bill and was told by his supervisor to give it back to someone as change. Feeling unable to give the bill to an unsuspecting customer, he eventually reached into his own pocket and paid to make up the discrepancy in the cash drawer.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet Bierfeldt; his three children Steven, Kristen, and Kevin; his mother, Joan Bierfeldt; his sister, Peggy Bierfeldt; his brother, James Bierfeldt; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John Bierfeldt on April 4, 2009. I

n lieu of flowers, it was Jerry’s wish to have donations made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50. Memphis, TN 38101. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Jct. at 10am on Wednesday, February 3. To send condolences or relate the impact Jerry Bierfeldt had on your life, please visit the family’s online guestbook at www.MemorialWebsites. Legacy.com/GerardBierfeldt.

JEmail: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) at Brother Robert’s game

Dear John,

Both the Women and the Men won their games handily tonight. The turnout by the students was very good. I can see where the TV shots might show a number of empty seats, but the ends under the baskets were full. The halftime tribute to Brother Robert was very touching and heartfelt. Fans were give fan like devices that had Brother Roberts face on them. A great idea. The reception was not that well attended but was very nice. We should have more of them.

   Best,
    Mike

McEneney, Mike (MC1953)

[JR: Thanks, Mike. Much appreciated for the report. Perhaps due to the short trigger -- the event was last minute from my POV -- it might have been better attended by alums. Although that's making excuses a little. Like the weather. Like the short notice. Like the stars didn't align. Hard to explain the attendance at times.]

The program intends to provide students with an experience akin to studying abroad at a more affordable price. Ronald Herzman, English professor and co-director of the Edgar Fellows program, helped initiate the opportunity and said he is passionate about what it will entail for participants.

“It’s kind of odd that nobody had thought of this before,” he said. “This program will give us the opportunity to explore New York City intensively. New York City is a great place to have an adventure.”

Students who live in the metropolitan New York City area will be able to commute from home if they choose; others will have the opportunity to live in the dormitories of Manhattan College, a residential campus which connects to the city by train.

Herzman graduated from Manhattan College and said he is friends with the current dean of the college. “It is the perfect suburban campus, located right near Manhattan,” he said.

By Mel

I’ve known Betty for 7 years, we were close, in fact she was my only confidant. I knew Betty as a high schooler at Plainfield High, her and I became close there and since then she had been an extremely important person in my life. I often visited her in New York and Rhode Island, she came to my college graduation, and sent me flowers and cards every birthday without fail. I’ve been trying to reach her as the last time we spoke was in October, I just found out the news when I tried calling her again and her phone was disconnected. I cannot tell you how much she will be missed in my life, and I am hoping to find out here where she is buried. Please, if anyone has any information please email me at melissa . camacho  @  ymail . com or leave a post here.

Pope: priests should blog, tweet the gospel too
By Jacqui Cheng | Last updated January 25, 2010 1:28 PM

*** begin quote ***

Priests blogging! Cardinals on Facebook! Dogs and cats living together! No, it’s not the mass hysteria out of an 80s sci-fi movie: Pope Benedict XVI urged priests over the weekend to use as many tools as possible to communicate with people, which includes the Internet and—yes—blogging. The Pope, who has been a bit of an Internet cudmudgeon, acknowledged that “the larger digital world represents a great resource for humanity” and said priests should take advantage of the tool before they become outdated.

[JR: Bishop Fulton J. Sheen must be rolling over. The Church has failed to use the media to inspire the faithful and not so faithful. Worse they ceded the "playing field" to the Secular Progressives. Sigh, when will everyone take the new technologies seriously.]
