POSITRACTION: Steinbrenner was equally reserved in matters of charity

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner remembered as intense figure with charitable heart
HOWIE RUMBERG AP Sports Writer
12:39 AM PDT, July 14, 2010
*** begin quote ***
A media hound when it came to baseball matters, Steinbrenner was
equally reserved in matters of charity. And he gave plenty —
especially in his adopted hometown of Tampa.
Steinbrenner had no connection to Virginia Tech, but after a gunman
killed 32 students on the campus in 2007 he donated $1 million to the
“Hokies Spirit Memorial Fund” and sent the Yankees to
Blacksburg, Va., for an exhibition game.
“To respond to a need as he did and put it into action tells me
everything about what kind of a human being he was,” Virginia
Tech baseball coach Pete Hughes said. “It was an immediate
response, too, by him — ‘How can we help them?’
— and within 24 hours, the logistics of that game was being
talked about.”
A graduate of Williams College, Steinbrenner, nonetheless, funded the
Ohio State marching band for years — his name is on a campus
building.
“Mr. Steinbrenner and his wife were the driving force behind the
new marching band facility in Ohio Stadium,” said Jon Waters,
assistant band director. “We will always remember George
Steinbrenner’s love of music and his love of the Ohio State
University marching band.”
*** end quote ***
It was interesting.
In the past, some folks had nothing good to say about him. Now they
praise him. I know the rule is to say nothing ill of the dead, but I
don’t understand that. Pray for the sou, but be honest and true
to your own beliefs. If I’m a Swell Old Boy when I’m alive,
then why lie and say I was a saint after I’m dead?
And, one thing I did like about the fellow, other than his focus on
“winning”, was his charity. Never “rub your nose in
it”. But it was interesting how Yankee Stadium was always
available for a good cause. I ave no idea if that was by accident or on
orders form the top, but it just seemed to happen. I remember reading
through the years more than one terminally ill kid getting special
treatment at Yankee stadium. Could be selective memory or it could have
been orders from “the Boss”.
And, of course, we all were educated in the powers of a limited partner
by George. “There’s nothing more limited than a limited
partner in the Yankees.” — the late sports executive John
McMullen,
But the lesson of The Boss George was, imho, charity.
Quietly done as you see the need with a minimum of fuss.
That’s eternal.
p.s., I think Steinbrenner signed first black head coach of a US pro sports team: John McClendon, Cleveland Pipers

Meaghan Asselta Named Lafayette Head Softball Coach
2009 MAAC Coach of the Year Joins Leopards
July 22, 2010
From Lafayette Athletic Communications
*** begin quote ***
EASTON, Pa. – Meaghan Asselta has been named the head coach of
the Lafayette softball program Director of Athletics Bruce McCutcheon
announced Wednesday morning.
Asselta joins Lafayette after serving as head coach at Manhattan
College from 2006-09 and the 2010 season as the assistant softball
coach at the University of Rhode Island.
“We are excited to be taking on someone with the experience that
Meaghan has,” McCutcheon said. “She has been successful in
her coaching stops and we feel she is someone who fits well into the
mission for our athletic department.”
Prior to her arrival to URI, Asselta spent three years as the head
coach at Manhattan College, where she helped lead the Jaspers to the
Semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament
in 2009.
The 2009 team also recorded a school-record 11 conference wins and
earned a share of the MAAC regular-season title for the first time in
the program’s history. Asselta was named the 2009 Anaconda Sports
MAAC Coach of the Year following that run.
“I feel privileged to be associated with a prestigious
institution like Lafayette College,” said Asselta. “I am
honored to be a part of such a talented group of softball players and
I’m truly looking forward to guiding these student-athletes to
the program’s first Patriot League Championship.”
From 2005 until her arrival at Manhattan, the Ramsey, N.J., native
served as head coach of the 18U Gold Fall/Summer Pride softball team, a
club team that competed in numerous elite College Showcase Tournaments
nationwide. While at the gold level, she’s coached 14 players to
date, who have received Division I scholarships.
She began her coaching career in 2003 after graduating from Rutgers
University with a degree in Exercise Science & Sports Studies while
playing from 2001-03, serving as the team captain her junior and senior
year. Asselta was named to the NJ All-Century Softball Team-Shortstop
by the Star Ledger in 1999.
From 2003-05, Asselta served as varsity head coach of Montclair
Kimberley Academy in Montclair, N.J., where she led her squad to
back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005. She guided her team
a top five ranking in the Newark Star Ledger’s end of year
softball rankings during each of her two seasons at the helm of the
Cougars and was named the 2005 Coach of The Year. Asselta also coached
a season at Drew University from 2005-06.
The Leopards are coming off a year in which they went 15-33. The
Leopards advanced to the Patriot League Tournament in four of the
previous five seasons and return 12 letterwinners for the 2011 campaign.

ENDNOTE: And the Catholic hospitals.

Sale of Boston Catholic hospitals could end Catholic identity, director concedes
July 02, 2010
*** begin quote ***
At a public hearing on the sale of Caritas Christi, the health-care
system of the Boston archdiocese, the director of the 6-hospital system
admitted that he could not guarantee the continuation of the
institution’s Catholic identity after the transfer. James Karam
argued in favor of the sale, to the Cerberus capital firm, because he
said the only alternative would be closing the hospitals.
*** end quote ***
In last week’s ENDNOTE, I pointed out to you that
“Gooferment Skrules” kill Catholic Schools. Even in the
Gooferment’s tentative move to “Charter Schools”,
hated-by-the-Left as an adulteration and attack on the traditional
Gooferment Skrules, is or has the side effect of killing Catholic
Schools.
(Couldn’t possibly be the intention of the politicians and
bureaucrats to introduce “Charter Schools” to kill Catholic
Schools and, after the job is done, kill “Charter Schools”
forcing everyone into Gooferment Skrules. Which is what they wanted in
the first place. No, it must be just a coincidence. P.S.: I have a
bridge to sell you. Swamp land? A can’t lose investment that pays
42% annual interest? ARGH!)
This week, I’ll again point to the “War on Faith —
Hospitals’ Section”. Just a coincidence that the Catholic
Hospitals have to go out of business and be magically transformed into
Gooferment Hospitals. (Think they will be doing abortions there?)
And, you say there’s no Gooferment pogrom to destroy the Religious Right, the Catholic Church, and all its good works?
When they are marching Catholics and other religious people to the
reeducation death camps, then maybe you’ll see the assault for
what it is. Gooferment at its worst. Oppressing and killing its
citizens and people under its dominion.
But I’m the tin foil hat!
So how do you explain it?
# – # – #
A pogrom is a form of violent riot, a mob attack, either approved or
condoned by government or military authorities, directed against a
particular group, whether ethnic, religious, or other, and
characterized by killings and destruction of their homes, businesses,
and religious centers, property. The term was originally used to denote
extensive violence against Jews in the Russian Empire
