POSITRACTION: Great ideas are always great

Another of my “great ideas” spins, crashes, and burns. Argh! I thought this might be a winner. Luckily, it only cost under a hundred to try. Sigh! Farewell great idea, to the elephant’s bone yard where all my “great ideas” go to die a horrible death. Argh! But, I was trying. In the arena.

The idea was to give fathers a weekly email of a letter that they could write to their children. I was assuming that divorced dads might need a little help keeping the lines of communication open. Each week, I was going to email subscribers a letter that could be personalized and customized for their situation and mailed to their children. I lined up some child psych writers and pitched the idea to some divorced fathers groups. In group size scale, at my financial estimates, it could have meant subscriptions for 60$ a year gets 52 letters. If I could have gotten a million subscribers, it was a cool net 20M$ to me. I’d have truly reached my potential as the good Brothers in Manhattan Prep seemed convinced I had. (Boy, were they ever wrong about a lot of things.)

But, like all great ideas, no takers. Does that mean I shouldn’t have tried? My “costs” were a few hundred dollars, and some time. And, some egg on my face. And, neither should you NOT try to test your “great ideas”. Like that salad spinner centrifuge, not every idea will make you rich, but that idea can improve someone’s life. For now, I go back to the “Well of Inspiration” and buy a few lottery tickets while I await my next great idea.

I hope this convinces you that even Edison “failed”. His great quote: “I haven’t failed. I know know 10,000 way NOT to make a light bulb.” I hope you allow your ideas out and that they fare better than mine.

JHQ: MC awarded DEP Grant

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/080210_1.shtml

Manhattan College Awarded DEP Grant
Grant will create green roof for the New York Hospital to help reduce sewer overflow

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded Manhattan College with $661,000 of the $2.6 million Flushing and Gowanus Green Infrastructure Grant Initiative to support the installation of a modular green roof for the New York Hospital Queens in Flushing, N.Y. Out of five grant recipients, Manhattan College received the highest amount of grant funding to back a green project.

The DEP grant program was created in order to integrate the use of green infrastructure projects to regulate and capture stormwater runoff during wet weather. The project’s goal is to decrease the amount of stormwater and wastewater being diverted into New York City’s adjacent waterways. DEP currently manages New York City’s water supply and supplies nine million residents with one billion gallons of water each day.

Scott Lowe, Ph.D., associate professor in Manhattan College’s school of engineering and lead investigator for the project, is partnering with HDR Engineering, an architectural, engineering and consulting firm with locations throughout North America, to design and install 20,000 square feet of modular green roof. Manhattan College engineering students will be involved at every stage of the project. Once the roof is installed, students will gather and analyze data over a four-year period to determine how much water is being captured.

“The school of engineering is honored to be chosen as one of five grant recipients,” said Tim J. Ward, Ph.D., P.E., dean of the school of engineering. “Manhattan College engineers are trained and committed to integrating green practices throughout New York City and the grant project will allow our faculty and students to not only assist in improving the City’s water stewardship, but design, install and monitor the entire process for four years.”

For more information about the Flushing and Gowanus Green Infrastructure Grant Initiative, please visit DEP’s announcement at:

CARTOON: Ever wonder why … …

John: I haven’t sent you any political cartoons in a while, but here’s a new one. I’ve done a number of caricatures over the years depicting politicians as animals. I’ve made Richard Nixon into a cocker spaniel, Fred Thompson into an elephant and Gerald Ford into a gorilla (King Kong). Now it’s Obama’s turn. This kind of sums up the state of Obama’s presidency, in my view. I was afraid that Obama (with his skimpy resume and naive views on world affairs) might be the “Second Coming” of Jimmy Carter. It looks like that’s exactly what he’s turning out to be. At least he hasn’t given a “National Malaise” speech yet. (In case you’ve forgotten, it was the nadir of Carter’s presidency, and the most embarrassing speech ever given by an American President.) But there’s still time. And I’m sure his fan Chris Matthews (who wrote the original speech for Carter) will gladly write a new one for him. – Jerry Breen ’71

Judge Is Still Missing, but Novel Tracks Him Down

One day last week, the novelist Peter Quinn (“I’m actually a lapsed historian”) was walking west on 45th Street, beyond Eighth Avenue, when he stopped outside the old home of a vanished Broadway restaurant called Billy Haas’s Chophouse.

“This is it,” he said, nodding at the graceless apartment building that had, in the local manner, risen to take its place. “He comes out here” — Mr. Quinn pointed at the curb — “and a tan cab is heading west. He’s wearing a double-breasted coat. He’s just had dinner with William Klein, a lawyer for the Shubert brothers, and a showgirl named Sally Ritz. He tips his hat, climbs in the cab — and that’s it.”

Now MC again gave out “lifetime” email addresses. And, I know the good folks who did it. BUTT (there’s always a big but) you should ALWAYS own your own email address. You might trust MC, but they might be sold out to SUNY by the Gooferment. (Yeah, I know my tin foil hat is on too tight.)

Note this is different than buying email service from say Yahoo. At Yahoo, you become FriendOfBrotherJasper @ yahoo dot com, that’s the same problem as FriendOfBrotherJasper @ Your ISP dot com.

You need to OWN the part after the @!

And, I don’t particularly care what you call yourself. Or who handles your mail. Go buy FriendOfBrotherJasper dot whatever. Then use Google to handle the mail or the Service Provider. http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 but there are many other domain registrars. Mine is just the one I recommend.

(Disclaimer: If you use that link and sign up, I probably get a dime of your something a lot less than 20 bucks. This monumental inducement has not prejudiced my recommendation. But there some new FTC rule about blog payola so there I’ve disclosed this tremendous conflict of interest. Argh! Gooferment diktats!)

That name FriendOfBrotherJasper dot whatever is yours for as long as you pay the annual ten buck registration fee.

And it will never change.

He remembered being treated by a physician assistant for injuries he sustained as a soccer player at Methodist University during his first two years of school, and soon realized that pursuing a career as a PA would be rewarding while allowing him a full life outside of the one he lived in his scrubs. Lightbody graduated from the Yale School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program in 2007. “I never want to regret not living life to the fullest and I thought that if I were to go to med school then I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things in my life that I wanted to do,” he says. “I’m still certain I made the right decision.”

JOBIT: Bohan, Daniel P. [MC1962 RIP]

http://www.tributes.com/show/Daniel-Bohan-89094180

Daniel P. Bohan
    * BORN: August 13, 1940
    * DIED: August 5, 2010
    * LOCATION: McLean, VA

Daniel P. Bohan was born on August 13, 1940 to Marion Lennon Bohan and Daniel Bohan in New York City. Throughout his career, Daniel has distinguised himself as an entrepreneur, visionary, serviceman, builder and businessman. He received a degree in Psychology in 1962 from Manhattan College, where he was active in both the German Club and the rifle team. Soon after graduation, he joined the Air Force and was assigned to duty. His last assignment brought him to the Washington D.C. area where he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in the late 60’s. He loved the area around Washington and delighted in the town houses on Capitol Hill. He also took great joy in walking the vast land south of Washington D.C. in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, Virginia and invested in property there. A teacher of real estate, he decided that the area would make an ideal setting for a career in real estate.

Soon after he married Gloria Spinelli, they moved to Fredericksburg where he was quickly thrust into home building when a contractor whose homes he was selling suddenly died on the job. Gloria and Dan settled in one of the homes and both began their life’s work together in the area. The year was 1972. Dan was building homes and Gloria started a travel business. They shared an old English stone house as an office. They eventually decided the area was too far away from the “action”, so today a different office of theirs stands on the busy road known as Plank Road or Route 3, in front of the Spotsylvania Mall. Mr. Bohan established Omega Real Estate and Omega Organization, Builders and Developers while Gloria started Omega World Travel. During the 70’s, Mr. Bohan built some 400 homes and developed Battle Park Lakes in Spotsylvania, Virginia. When interest rates rose to over 18% in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Dan shifted his attention to the travel business that Gloria was operating. The travel business was also undergoing change in that it was being deregulated and new opportunities were emerging. Dan took great delight in helping Gloria to expand by searching for prime locations for travel offices around the greater Washington area. His construction crew shifted gears by building out and renovating offices using a modern design of low white counters and decor that distinguished the business from competitors and offered a consistent look for customer identification. By 1982, Omega had expanded to eight locations in the Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland areas.

At that time, the Government Accounting Office was conducting a test program to see how well private industry could service the government for official travel. This represented a real challenge to Dan who had been involved in proposal reviews and government forms while serving in the Air Force. He spearheaded Omega’s entry into government travel and set the stage for a unique and pioneering role in furthering the growth of travel agents in serving government travelers.

Always looking to do something “exciting”, Mr. Bohan saw the advantage in the early 80’s of buying and selling airline coupons that some carriers were offering to travelers as incentives to fly on their airline. This was legal at the time and it helped Omega establish a loyal customer base that appreciated the chance to save money. His loyal and trusted building crew once again shifted gears and helped further the effort by buying coupons from travelers at airports. This effort gained Omega nationwide attention for innovation. Dan continued to work closely with Gloria and the two formed a close partnership with Dan focused on sales and marketing, along with special projects. He quickly became well known in the travel business as an expert and visionary. Through the years, industry executives have credited him for his insight, creativity and ability to foresee future trends. His talent and energy has helped to spark the growth of Omega World Travel into the fifth largest travel agency in the U.S. and more recently, Cruise.com, which has become the largest seller of cruises on the Internet.

As a former cobol programmer, Daniel was intrigued with the Internet and encouraged Gloria to go along with the development of a travel technology company which is known as TravTech. Dan grew up on Long Island where his father developed and built homes in Bellport, Bluepoint, Amityville and Westhampton Beach. Bohan senior was an early developer of beachfront property along Dune Road in the late 40’s and sold homes along the ocean for $5, 000 and bayside for $4200. He was also considered a great visionary at that time for taking what was considered a risk in buying along the ocean. He and his wife, Marion, built and ran the Ocean Bay Apartments in the early 50’s which Dan and Gloria today still operate in the village of Westhampton Beach. Daniel learned the building and real estate business from his father who also owned a real estate agency in Westhampton. He inherited his mother’s outgoing personality and loved sales and meeting people. He was very proud of his mother’s efforts as a Gray Lady during the war. Like her, he has always been energized by the challenges of new experiences and “Meet People” is a slogan he has promoted in business.

Dan loved the water as he grew up along the sandy dunes of Long Island. He learned to sail at an early age and always wanted to live near the water, whether it was the ocean or rivers. His mother and father loved to take him and his cousins in their Ford “tin lizzy” to Miami during the cold winters up north. Dan has continued to love winters down south. Gloria and Dan even had their wedding reception and honeymoon on a cruise ship. Love of water and cruising was not only the spark that ignited the idea for Omega, but also, for Cruise.com. While Dan has never tired of finding new things to challenge him in life, whether work or play, perhaps the thing that he values most is the respect and love that he has earned from his employees.

Dan has struggled for 6 years to overcome a brain injury sustained after heart surgery in 2004. His dramatic fight has inspired the medical community and his effort has helped those with traumatic brain injuries. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Gloria Spinelli Bohan; his cousins George Atwater, Susan and Joseph Sciareno; Doris and Jean Wells; Lucille and Jack O’Dwyer; niece and nephew, Christine and John O’Dwyer and many devoted friends.

Parachuting donkey shocks Russian beachgoers
AFP – Wednesday, July 21

*** begin quote ***

MOSCOW (AFP) – – Russian beachgoers got a shock when they saw a donkey soaring in the blue skies over the balmy beaches on the Sea of Azov in southern Russia last week, police said on Tuesday. Attached to a parachute, the animal screamed in fear as it circled over heads of holidaymakers sunbathing on a beach in the Cossack village of Golubitskaya in the Krasnodar region. A regional police spokeswoman said the donkey ended up in the skies as a result of an impromptu advertising campaign by several Russian entrepreneurs to attract beachgoers to their private beach.

“The donkey screamed and children cried,” regional police spokeswoman Larisa Tuchkova told AFP. “No-one had the brains to call police.”

[JR: I'd suggest that someone drop the "entrepreneurs" out of a plane upside down dangling form a chute. It would serve them right to have an international and national boycott of their project. Like that shopping center "where Santa died" after helicopter arrival of Jolly Old went bad in front of all the children. Would serve them right to go broke and go screaming as their bank balance drop to zero.]
