POSITRACTION: Event on the banks of the “River of the Holy Spirit” on 03 Oct

http://goo.gl/c7hp

*** begin quote ***

Today marks exactly 40 days before Election Day. Organized prayer campaigns have sprouted up across the country using the biblical 40 days as a time to fast and pray – to pray that God will guide the conscience and hearts of voters this November.

*** and ***

P.S. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe was built in La Crosse, WI, which sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. Little known to most Americans, the mighty Mississippi was originally called Río del Espíritu Santo (“River of the Holy Spirit”), and later explored by Fr. Jacques Marquette who proposed calling it the River of the Immaculate Conception. How fitting then that this beautiful Shrine dedicated to the Patroness of all the Americas would be located so close to this mighty river.

*** end quote ***

[JR: We certainly need voters with a consciences. And, I didn’t know the original name of the Mississippi. Given it’s size, it certainly would have been an appropriate name. I’m sure “The King” Gooferment wants dumb voters and would like to wipe religion and conscience from its serfs. Maybe a Wisconsin Jasper can represent us on the banks of the “River of the Holy Spirit”?]

JEMAIL: Baker, Dick (MC1952) reports a “best in memory” retreat

September 26, 2010

Mega kudos to Ed McEneney, his brother, Mike and the committee who organized and planned the retreat that concluded today.

The attendees who have come to these retreats regularly agreed that this was the best one in their memory. The speakers were outstanding.

My son, Steve (’88-Business School) and I attended.

We both agreed that it was a very successful and inspiring weekend.

Good going, Guys.

Dick Baker (’52 Business School)

[JR: No wonder the research desk in virtual jasper jottings newsroom was empty. (As well as all the all the others, except for the CIC which is almost always "on the air".) I'm truly glad that the cohort attending had a "best in memory", but the readership may wonder about those memories. Perhaps we'll need objective evidence. What would that metric be? Number of prayers per hour. Laughs per minute (a laugh is a form of prayer). Or as one Theologian, who taught injineers, said the number of minutes to empty the room at the end of class. lim f(x)|t→0 =1/∞ and ∂f/∂t=∞ L'Hôpital's rule is in there somewhere, but my memory is fading too. Thanks for the report. Content is always "thin" here at the newsroom.]

JFOUND: Barone, Sam [MC1965] “Dawn Of Empire”

http://ebooksonly.blogspot.com/2010/09/dawn-of-empire-sam-barone.html

Dawn Of Empire – Sam Barone
Posted by CoolLion at 10:06 AM

*** begin quote ***

Sam Barone is an American historical novelist with novels centered on early Antiquity. He attended Manhattan College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965, with a major in Psychology and a minor in History.

Dawn of Empire. The first novel in the Eskkar Saga, this book describes the struggle to build mankind’s first walled city, and the fight to defend it. Action packed, the love story of Eskkar and the slave girl Trella is set against the background of a barbarian invasion.

Former software designer Barone sets his entertaining debut novel in Mesopotamia at the dawn of civilization. The nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes, who in 2500 B.C.E. still dominate the fertile valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, are agitated at encroaching gentrification. Barbarian chieftain Thutmose-sin announces that Orak, the agricultural “great village” of 2,000 people nestled along the banks of the Tigris, “defies our way of life” and must be destroyed. Instead of fleeing the fearsome barbarian warriors who have never been defeated by “dirt eaters,” the citizens of Orak stay and fight. They’re led by a former barbarian, Eskkar, and his young slave mistress, Trella, who is wise beyond her years and station. The apocalyptic battle that ensues will determine which culture—that of the nomad or the villager—will prevail. Barone’s characters are engaging enough, if not fully realized, and the action is fast-paced, if sometimes predictable. The combat scenes, gritty and bloody, are especially vivid. Equal parts history lesson, love story and war saga, Barone’s first historical will have readers turning pages.

JHQ: Connolly, John P. [MC1973] National Academy of Engineering

Former Manhattan College Professor and Alumnus Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Former Manhattan College environmental engineering professor and alumnus, John P. Connolly ’73 and ’75, Ph.D., and senior technical advisor at Anchor QEA, LLC, in Montvale, N.J., was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) earlier this year. Connolly served as a faculty member at Manhattan for 14 years, and holds a B.S. and M.S. in civil and environmental engineering from the College, and a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Texas, Austin.

Since NAE election is among the highest professional distinctions an engineer can receive, the school of engineering displays plaques in the William J. Scala Academy room to pay tribute to Manhattan engineers elected to NAE, and Connolly is among 15 other distinguished engineering alumni elected to the NAE. In order to honor Connolly’s election, the College’s school of engineering held a plaque unveiling ceremony this summer. Connolly also presented his research at the ceremony that NAE cited in his election, which was for his development of integrated water-quality models used for remediation and management planning for large, contaminated water bodies.

“Dr. Connolly continues a long line of Manhattan College graduates who have gone on to distinguish themselves in engineering. His work on Hudson River contamination is internationally known and grows out of his education as an environmental engineer at the college,” said Tim J. Ward, Ph.D., P.E., dean of the school of engineering. “The school of engineering and Manhattan College are proud of Dr. Connolly’s election to the National Academy of Engineering, once again demonstrating the potential of a Jasper engineer.”

In addition to his work at Anchor QEA, LLC, an environmental consulting firm, Connolly has conducted research and consulted in the areas of contaminant fate and transport and bioaccumulation. Connolly worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the late 1970’s while pursuing his Ph.D., was a partner at HydroQual, Inc. for five years, and president of Quantitative Environmental Analysis, LLC from 1998 to 2009.

As an environmental engineer, he assisted in the development of the mathematical model used by the United States and Canada as a basis for nutrient control policies in the Lake Erie watershed. Connolly’s successful career has also included: testifying before Congress on contaminated sediment issues, and serving as a Diplomate for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the Environmental Engineering Committee of the USEPA Science Advisory Board and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Manhattan’s L.O.V.E. to Sponsor Book Sale

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College’s office of campus ministry and social action will be sponsoring a book sale on Saturday, Oct. 9, located in Smith Auditorium from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L.O.V.E.) trips scheduled for this upcoming year. The books were donated by a member of the campus community and nearly 1,000 books will be on sale including: recent and class novels, non-fiction books, textbooks and much more.

L.O.V.E. is a service program within the Manhattan College community that strives to provide students with the opportunity to participate in community service and explore what it means to work towards social justice around the world. As a part of the Lasallian tradition, L.O.V.E encourages students to develop relationships with not only their peers but also their surrounding communities whose culture and lifestyles differ from their own. L.O.V.E. seeks to offer students an experience that develops their spiritual and cultural growth through reflection and discussion, and further shape their commitment to social justice in the future.

“The Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience operates primarily on donations from family and friends of participants, local businesses and fundraisers, such as this book sale. All fund raising efforts help subsidize the out of pocket cost for the student participants,” said Jennifer Edwards, Manhattan College coordinator for social action service trips. “This book sale is a great way to advertise the L.O.V.E. program and the students’ commitment to the Lasallian tradition in the local community.”

ENDNOTE: O’Connell, Bill (MC1976) creates a litany of misdeeds

http://libertyslifeline.com/2010/09/21/coons-vs-o%E2%80%99donnell-are-you-kidding-me/

Coons vs O’Donnell. Are You Kidding Me?
21 September 2010
O’Connell, Bill (MC1976)

*** begin quote ***

In the desperate attempt to throw anything and everything they can find at Christine O’Donnell to try to derail her roaring comeback, her critics have gone all the way back to probe who her friends were in high school. High school. If that is a criteria for being unfit for government office, how about these gems:

    * President Barack Obama admitted using marijuana and cocaine in high school, but he is fit to be the chief law enforcement officer of the United States
    * Vice President Joe Biden committed plagiarism and had to drop out of the 1988 Presidential race, but he is fit to be the “experienced statesman” to balance the Obama-Biden team
    * President Bill Clinton lied under oath to a federal judge to prevent a woman with a legitimate case of sexual harassment from having her day in court.
    * Senator Ted Kennedy left a woman in a submerged car to die rather than doing everything possible to help save her life and his Democratic colleagues called him the “Lion of the Senate”
    * Timothy Geithner oversees the IRS, but didn’t pay his own taxes
    * Charlie Rangel is under investigation for numerous ethics violations including not paying his taxes despite being the former chairman of the Congressional committee that writes the tax laws.
    * Hillary Clinton, not as a high school student but as First Lady, held a séance so she could talk to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Is that enough or should I continue? And these people and their supporters say, Christine O’Donnell is not fit for office? Maybe she should rob a bank so that her resume would be more in line with these icons of the Democrat firmament.

*** end quote ***

Don’t forget that Hilary was the mastermind / lynchpin of Whitewater where old minority retirees were cheated out of their life savings and retirement dreams. All legal, of course. And, managed to teflon it off.

Not that the R’s are paragons of virtue. But they are on the outside looking in.

Of course, should they get in, they too will immediately begin corruptly feathering their own nests, rewarding their friends, and punishing their enemies.

Like the USSR, it’s only a matter of time until the USA breaks down into pieces.

Consent of the governed? Secession anyone!

John,

I don’t know how my name became associated with the item about Christine O’Donnell in the October 3 Jasper Jottings because I did not submit it to you and I certainly do not share the views stated therein. Please publish a retraction exonerating me in the next JJ.

Bill O’Connell,

Bill,

Sorry. Brain freeze. I springboarded off the blog “Liberty’s Life Line” post of O’Connell, Bill (MC1976). Some how in marking the Class Year, I saw yours. I feel like Colonel Jessep in a few good men a few minutes after he said: “So how is your dad, Danny?” It was a blunder. And, I hope I didn’t cause you any embarrassment.
