POSITRACTION: Baird, Bob (MC1969) ” … no matter your age, everyone can …”

Humanitarian shares life lessons in book
By Bob Baird • Journal News columnist • September 19, 2010

*** begin quote ***

Dr. Martha MacGuffie says the lessons in a new book on her life have guided her since she was a young girl planning a career in medicine. But it’s only in the past four years, working with New City author Lynn Cluess Manzione, that she says they came together as a prescription for life that works for all ages.

Together, they have co-authored “A Wondrous Journey,” subtitled, “a small book with big lessons.” It was published in June and this week they begin local appearances sharing its story.

It is their story. Although the focus is the fulfilling and often painful life of a woman who is arguably Rockland’s most revered physician and a humanitarian on a global scale, the book also shows how MacGuffie’s lessons applied to the life experiences of Manzione, about half her age.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Many know broad strokes of MacGuffie’s life, including some of her many heartbreaks. She finished Cornell in three years, met a man and fell in love, soon getting pregnant. She was pregnant again, and continuing her medical education, when the marriage failed. By then, she had lost her mother, battled anorexia and her father’s depression, which ended in his suicide.

Two of her children, sons Robbie and Reid, were born with a rare form of anemia, requiring transfusions eventually resulting in their death from AIDS. After her second marriage failed, another son who was a drug addict vanished and is presumed dead.

{Extraneous Deleted}

… she thought about Africa and after trips there she founded SHARE, the Society for Resources and Hospital Exchange, in 1987.

She’s made more than 25 trips, mostly to Kenya, delivering hope, medical supplies and money, treating orphans and widows of the AIDS epidemic, famine and war.

She’s created hospitals and medical dispensaries and started varied health and education programs with help from school children, donors and health professionals who continue her work.

{Extraneous Deleted}

… … plan book signings and more school visits, spreading the message that an individual alone is responsible for how their life turns out, that self-doubt is detrimental to success, and that, no matter what your age, everyone can make a difference.

[JR: An absolutely inspiring tale. For all Jaspers, young and old.]

JEMAIL: Altomari, Gennaro [MC1978] daughter's benefit past but still needs $

From: Kathy Altomari Cardinuto
Sent: Friday, October 08, 2010 10:44 AM
Subject: Benefit for Jean Altomari

Please take 1 minute to read this! Her father was a graduate of Manhattan College.

My name is Kathy Altomari Cardinuto -

I am reaching out to you regarding my daughter, Jean Altomari, who is a Pennsylvania State Trooper. She grew up in Rockland, graduated from Nyack High School in 1997, and moved to Pennsylvania just a few years ago. On November 18, 2009, she was on vacation on a Carnival cruise with an excursion in Cozumel, Mexico, and was involved in a horrific car crash – she is paralyzed from her chest down and she will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She needs so much help – on top of medical bills – she needs to renovate her house to accommodate her wheelchair and her needs, and special equipment is needed to help her with her rehabilitation. Some of her former classmates and teammates at Nyack High School have organized a benefit to help her with some costs.

It could have been worse – thank God she is still here – is what I keep telling myself. But it is so devastating and heartbreaking as a mother to see my young, vibrant, athletic, beautiful daughter confined to a wheelchair forever. (Pls google Jean Altomari to see what an amazing person she is!)

I am reaching out to everyone help my daughter –perhaps you can make a monetary donation – or perhaps you’ll be able to attend the Benefit for Jean Altomari. I’ve enclosed a copy of the flyer for her benefit. Would you please post this in your office and mention it to anyone you can think of. (Her benefit just passed, but we still are in need of donations.)

“In Benefit to Jean Altomari” c/o Kathy Cardinuto 62 Sharp Street Haverstraw, NY 10927

Thanks! For more info {Privacy Invoked; Email CIC forcontact info.}  Thank you so very much in advance,Kathy Cardinuto

In November, Altomari, Anthony and three friends had rented a Jeep to go beach hopping on Cozumel in Mexico. It was one of the ports-of-call on their Carnival Legend cruise in the western Caribbean, Altomari’s first vacation in about 10 years. They were heading back to return the Jeep when a second Jeep came flying out of a side street and blew a stop sign, about 2:30 p.m. Nov. 18, 2009. Two of six people in the second Jeep were killed. Anthony suffered crushing elbow and foot injuries that kept her out of work. She returned April 27.

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) thinks Planned Parenthood does some good

RE: [Distribute_Jasper_Jottings] JASPER JOTTINGS Week 41 – 2010 Oct 10
RE: EMAIL Vaccarino, Carmine (MC1957) and Planned Parenthood

Dear fJohn,

I think that you and Jasper Vaccarino take much too narrow a view of Planned Parenthood – ignoring much good work that they do in sex education and awareness of STD’s etc. While they may offer abortion services, those are hardly their main works.

[JR: Well, you might be right. About the only thing that's narrow on me is my view. "One man cannot do right in one department of life whilst he is occupied in doing wrong in any other department. Life is one indivisible whole." --Gandhi The impression I have is that there is an "abortion industry" and Planned Parenthood is a leading player. It's like saying the Nazi's made the trains run on time. You can't overlook the genocide. And, that's what abortion is! I don't have a way to stop it; I don't like what Gooferment does. I'm shocked at the "Catholic Universities" continually compromising on principles. Of any of us, they should know better. No one learned the lesson of Thomas More?]

ENDNOTE: Catholic Charities meets with the King that’s killing them

Catholic Charities leaders meet with President Obama on centennial anniversary

*** end quote ***

Washington D.C., Sep 30, 2010 / 07:01 am (CNA).- Marking the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities USA, leaders from the organization met with President Obama last week, who congratulated the group and recognized their decades of service to communities across the nation.

*** and ***

According to a Catholic Charities USA press release, President Obama recognized the organization for their 100 years of service, congratulated them on their centennial anniversary and discussed with them their bipartisan legislative effort aimed at poverty relief.

[JR: "What fools these mortals be." Why would you meet with and accept the congratulations of the titular "King" who is crushing your religion? He must have laughed at their stupidity. Who thinks that the Gooferment wants to "end poverty"? And lose all those voters. And lose all those bureaucrats. And lose the ownership of all those serfs. Lose the "poverty industry"? Argh! Who defines what "poverty" is? Is it the end of an ever present bell shaped curve, or is it some comparison to an international minimum? Those folks who have to live by picking through garbage without clean water or hope. That's poor. Most of the USA's poor is rich by comparison. While I have a personal problem with organized religions, I have a bigger problem with Gooferment. The meme that enslaves and kills. I just shake my head!]
