All bishops of the world are being asked to invite the faithful to pray for the unborn during the prayerful season before Christmas during the prayerful season before Christmas. # – # – # [JR: Regardless of how "Catholic" a Catholic you are, one can "pray for the unborn during the prayerful season before Christmas". As a pro-choice pro-life anti-death penalty little L libertarian, who spent a lot of years in Catholic school, I can only wonder why we permit the various Gooferments of the world, including our own, to kill people. Men of good conscience can debate when exactly that the Right to Life, as cited in the DofI, inures to a person. It's hard to debate that the widespread use of abortion, as birth control and population control, has DRAMATICALLY changed the species. It's hard to imagine a more self-destructive meme. Morality aside, it's just stupid behavior. And, this sinner joins the bishops in their call to reflection on this self-inflicted genocide. Donna Nobis Pacem!] # # # # # |

Quite the opposite. Instead representatives from the College (Barbara Fabe, the College’s Vice President for Human Resources, and Shelley Sanders Kehl, the attorney whom the College has retained) informed us that the College intends to argue at the Labor Board that there should be no election scheduled at all, that adjunct faculty, indeed that all employees of Manhattan College are not entitled to even vote on the question of union representation. The College’s position is that its employees are exempt from the National Labor Relations Act (the federal law that guarantees most employees in the private sector the right to organize and join unions) because of its identity as a Catholic college. Legally-speaking, the College is invoking the precedent of the “Carroll College decision,” a 2007 case where the DC Circuit Court of Appeals overruled a Labor Board decision in Wisconsin. It’s too complicated to explain the entire case here — though we’re happy to go through the details with any of you who are interested in learning more or you can check out this link for a good layperson synopsis http://www.aftface.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=496&Itemid=99999999 *** and *** What do you think? Oct 18, 2010 JHQ: Sociology Major Offers New Concentrations and Minorhttp://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/101510_1.shtmlOctober 15, 2010 Manhattan College Sociology Major Offers New Concentrations and Minor RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Current or prospective sociology majors at Manhattan College now have even more course options than before with a new minor in cultural anthropology, and a concentration in immigration and global sociology. In addition, the crime, law and social justice and social services concentrations have enhanced curriculum requirements and feature fresh components and courses. “The new immigration and global sociology concentration is the first program at Manhattan to exclusively analyze immigration and allows sociology majors to gain a greater understanding of the challenges facing immigrant communities and the larger social development implications of these issues within both national and global contexts,” said Ricardo A. Dello Buono, Ph.D., chair of the sociology department and associate professor of sociology. The three sociology concentrations feature and target the following career paths: * Immigration and Global Sociology – This brand new concentration offers a variety of courses and is geared toward students with career interests in immigration policy and advocacy, local immigrant support services, and international cooperation and development agencies. * Crime, Law and Social Justice– Students focusing on a career in criminal justice, law, community activism or human rights advocacy pursue the criminal justice and sociology of law concentration, which offers new courses in Transnational Organized Crime. * Social Services – This social work concentration is for the student looking to obtain a social-service related career after graduation, and now includes the following courses: Social Service Practice, Practicing Empowerment and The Modern Metropolis (a new urban studies course). Sociology students interested in minoring in cultural anthropology are required to complete 15 credits under a departmental adviser’s supervision. In addition to three required courses, cultural anthropology course options include: Urban or Visual Anthropology; Anthropology of Drugs; Societies and Cultures of Latin America; Workers and the Workplace; Culture, Health and Illness; and much more. “The cultural anthropology minor and three expanded course concentrations launched this fall offer several new avenues for Manhattan students to explore,” Dello Buono added. She grew up in Rockland, graduated from Nyack High School in 1997, and moved to Pennsylvania just a few years ago. On November 18, 2009, she was on vacation on a Carnival cruise with an excursion in Cozumel, Mexico, and was involved in a horrific car crash – she is paralyzed from her chest down and she will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She needs so much help – on top of medical bills – she needs to renovate her house to accommodate her wheelchair and her needs, and special equipment is needed to help her with her rehabilitation. Some of her former classmates and teammates at Nyack High School have organized a benefit to help her with some costs.>> She may want to contact the Boy Scouts. To get to Eagle, boy scouts have to do a project to help the community or someone in the community. Several Eagle scouts have built ramps for access to peoples homes as their Eagle Scout project. She should contact the local Boy Scout troops and see if they would consider having a fundraiaser and making some of the modifications to the home as one or more scouts’ Eagle projects. Bill proudly served his Country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. He worked in the field of assembly, operation and maintenance of Nuclear and Conventional weapons. During a tour in Korea, he was injured in an unfortunate accident which kept him in the hospital for 3 years and left him with a medical honorable discharge. He went on to graduate from Engineering school and worked for Grinner Engineering. Linda and Bill were married in 1992 and lived in Embassy Hills, Leisure Beach, and Spring Hill. Together they have 5 children. It can easily be said that Bill “never knew a stranger” since he was never at a loss for conversation. He could talk about anything and he did love cars, especially his 1969 carousal red GTO and of course Cadillac’s. We can’t forget about the trains. Oct 22, 2010 JHQ: MC Enhances Urban Affairs Programhttp://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/101910_1.shtmlOctober 19, 2010 Manhattan College Enhances Urban Affairs Program with Single Urban Affairs Major RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College’s school of arts now offers an urban affairs major with a more concentrated focus on urban issues and no longer requires students to have a dual major. “I’m looking forward to building on the past success of urban affairs and expanding into some new areas,” said Cory Blad, director of the urban affairs program and assistant professor of sociology. “In particular, the impact of globalization on urban space and the challenge of urban decline in former manufacturing centers.” With the major comes an assortment of new courses, including: Street Art & the City; Urban Art and the History of Venice; Power and Conflict; the New York Skyscraper; Police and Society; and Social Class and Inequality. In addition, faculty members from other departments will add classes to count toward the urban affairs major. Blad is also working to further expand the structure of the urban affairs program by increasing College and community partnerships and interactive public events, and displaying outstanding student contributions. For example, urban affairs students are working with LIFT’s Bronx chapter, which is a national organization designed to help alleviate poverty through support in job searches, résumé construction, tax filing and much more. “One of the great things about an interdisciplinary program is the opportunity to really expand how you think about cities and urban life in general, and I am hopeful that we can continue to push those boundaries and grow this exciting program,” Blad explained. Current and future students will still have the option of double majoring and minoring in urban affairs. Oct 22, 2010 JHQ: Rutgers’ Psychology Professor to Speak 28OCT@1700http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/102110_1.shtmlOctober 21, 2010 Rutgers’ Psychology Professor to Speak at Manhattan RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Rochel Gelman, Ph.D., co-director of the Center for Cognitive Science at Rutgers University and professor of psychology, will visit Manhattan College as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar program. During her two-day visit, Gelman will deliver a lecture entitled Early Cognitive Development and Beyond on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall, and the event is free and open to the public. Gelman focused early in her career on finding and demonstrating how preschoolers and even infants were conceptually more competent than assumed by existing theories. As a result, she went on to publish Preschool Pathways to Science, The Child’s Understanding of Number and the article “Language and the Origin of Numerical Concepts” in Science Magazine, as well as articles on both math and science education in Early Childhood Research Quarterly. She also has developed a Science-into-ESL program and preschool exhibits at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. Prior to working at Rutgers University, Gelman taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Los Angeles. As an established expert in the study of preschoolers, Gelman has received awards from the American Psychological Association (Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award), the Association for Psychological Science (William James Fellow) and the Society for Research in Child Development (Lifetime Contribution to the Study of Child Development). In addition, she is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. “The Upsilon of New York chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is pleased to welcome Dr. Gelman to Manhattan College,” said Michael Judge, Ph.D., secretary-treasurer of Manhattan’s chapter, associate professor and acting chair of the biology department. “We are excited by her visit and look forward to stimulating conversations as we continue our tradition of a strong liberal education.” The Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program makes available each year a dozen or so distinguished scholars who will visit colleges and universities with chapters of Phi Beta Kappa. They spend two days on each campus, meeting informally with students and faculty members, taking part in classroom discussions, and giving a public lecture open to the entire academic community. The purpose of the program is to contribute to the intellectual life of the institution by making possible an exchange of ideas between the visiting scholars and the resident faculty and students. Now entering its 55th year, the Visiting Scholar Program has sent 577 scholars on 4,784 two-day visits since it was established in 1956. After graduating from Manhattan College in 2007, I helped launch healthgifts.com, an eco-friendly gift giving company. I then spent two years at a Boutique Ad Agency in Manhattan, day-dreaming about my real passions, before I co-created www.ecoeastend.com, a site dedicated to a powerful green living movement throughout the Hamptons and Long Island. I’ve also contributed to publications such as Hamptons Cottages & Gardens and Edible East End and I’ve interviewed and developed strong relationships with hundreds of like-minded businesses and individuals. Longoria J, a Mexican-American who was drafted and shipped out along with the 27th Infantry Regiment to Luzon, Philippines. He left behind his wife and four-year-old daughter. While Longoria was out in the Philippines, he was killed in action. Although he died in 1945, his remains were not returned to the United States until 1949. In his hometown of Three Rivers, Texas, the director of the only funeral town available would not let him be buried because he was Mexican. In addition to this controversy, the only cemetery of Three Rivers was segregated and Longoria had to be buried in the “Mexican” part of the cemetery, which was divided from the “white” section by barbed wire. *** end quote *** [JR: Speechless. How could Americans be so ... stupid. We need to see these lessons to avoid the same prejudices in the future. It a cemetery. Great Brother Jasper's Ghost!!!
