Of course, I have to rise to the defense.] Dear Father Dan, May I call to your attention the response of Manhattan College’s (non-Christina Brother) President Brennan O’Donnell? http://goo.gl/pkRrH In particular, one quote: “What is most disappointing and disheartening in the union’s arguments and in the NLRB’s decision is the complete lack of appreciation for what it means to be a 21st century Catholic college whose mission requires engagement with the broader culture of American society and higher education.” He’s very eloquent; I’m just a grumpy fat old white guy injineer, who’s more sinner than saint. But, I do speak up for my Alma Mater when I think she’s being treated badly. The Gooferment, The King, The Gang in DC are very clever. They rig the game and then jump on a participant when they follow their rules. MC has been “mousetrapped”. It had to survive when the rules of “financing College Education” demanded “secularization”. (Only that mid-West college, Hillsdale in Michigan, doesn’t allow its students to use Federal money?) It had to survive the wave of feminism and Title IX (i.e., it had to admit women). It had to survive when the King competed with it directly for students (i.e., SUNY gave generously to MC’s target market of students). It had to survive when even the Church itself didn’t stand up for its own “brand” (i.e., the Catholic in Name Only politicians like the Kennedys, Pelosi, and on and on). It had to survive when the child abuse scandals wracked Catholic institutions. Then, when MC does survive, everyone piles on saying “not catholic enough”. (Actually, let’s make a comparison to its peers. It doesn’t give honorary degrees to a pro-abortion President Obama like Notre Dame. It doesn’t cover up its crucifixes like Georgetown. It hasn’t been “de-listed” like Marymount Manhattan. So maybe MC has some redeeming characteristics?) Just one note in support of the argument about tough economics, I note that Catholic Grammar Schools are not doing so well financially. Maybe this fact alone will lend credence to my argument about the King trying to “kill” the Church as surely as a hive can only have one Queen Bee. MC is supposed to be a University; it has NEVER been an indoctrination camp. Like a cult. I remember attending a Theology Class or two — anathema for an injineer — and having been told that “Free Will” means having to make up your own mind. And, that if you couldn’t defend what you believe in, then you were leading an “unexamined life”. Now, maybe you’re being a lot like the NLRB, if someone doesn’t celebrate the Presentation like the SuperBowl, then they are “not Catholic enough” by your standard. Sounds a bit like “judge not” to this old injineer. In my self-imposed labor of collecting alumni news for a little alumni ezine I “write” Jasper Jottings (http://www.jasperjottings.com) — maybe not so little since I’m told I have a lot of readers; it is fun when young alums tell me they read it! — I report on the obits of my fellow alums. I consistently read them. I’m certainly no judge of “catholic-ness”, but if we exclude the religious, I read about men who are hard working, faithful to their wives, raise families, send children to Catholic schools, do impressive charitable works, and lead scandal free lives. In an age, when that’s unusual. (I say “men” because women began being admitted as undergraduates in the late 60s haven’t begun dying yet in significant numbers.) We’re told by their works, you shall know them. Based on that standard, I’d urge you to consider MC “catholic enough”. Even though imho, no one should be judgmental? Scandal is a different type of judgement. But, I don’t think you’re making that case. For the record, I’m probably “not catholic enough” either. I’d freely plead “guilty” to that. I didn’t “celebrate” the Super Bowl. MP4B (“Millionaires Playing For Billionaires”) turns me off. Nor did I know that last Wednesday was the Feast of the Presentation. (Despite having the “catholic calendar” on my computer.) So I didn’t celebrate that either. Let me point out the fallacy of your standards. I might squeak under the wire. I do know the Annunciation is 3/25. Annunciation was the first Catholic Grammar School I attended. The good Nuns beat that date into my hand literally. But, I’ve forgiven them in accordance with the diktat “as you forgive others, so too”. So maybe there is hope for me yet? I sure hope Saint Peter at that Gate is a more liberal judge than you are about MC. There is a Gate right? Otherwise this is all moot. F. He retired as the Distribution Manager for Leviton Manufacturing Co., Long Island, NY and had been a retired Major in the US Air Force Reserves after serving active duty as a veteran of the Korean War. A graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, NY, he received his BA degree from Manhattan College, NY. Mr. Purtell was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ. Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann Purtell; a son, Thomas Patrick Purtell; a daughter, Linda Carol Purtell and a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole. His sister, Mary Alice Markel had predeceased him in 1972. In the entirety of the Student Village where I life, there is one laundry room, and joy of joys, it costs 10 shekels to wash and 10 shekels to dry. That’s about $3.50! To put it in perspective, just a wash (not including drying) is the same price as a kilo of lentils, or 2.5 kilo of oranges, or a half kilo of mushrooms. My one roommate washes her clothes by hand, which makes me feel really lazy. Luckily, I was able to infiltrate the secret world of the Jeff Seidel Jewish student center. All you have to do is sign up for a time and laundry is free!! It might take about 2 hours minimum, but with a comfy lounge and wifi, it’s a great place to go study. It’s a pain if people don’t abide by the sign- up sheet, but at the student center they will also feed you, making it even more desirable than the laundry room. It might be a pain once the semester start, but for right now, I would rather do my laundry for free and spend my money on oranges. Feb 10, 2011 MEMAIL: Father Dan responds to my defense of MCDear Mr. Reinke,I wondered if I would receive a comment from someone who was specifically concerned with Manhattan College! (I should note that I have been on retreat the last several days, so I only found your e-mail this afternoon when I accessed the Internet for the first time since Sunday.) I ask you, first, to view what I wrote through the lens of what it is: a Sunday homily to my parishioners in Maryland, far from NYC. My purpose in citing the NLRB-Manhattan College investigation was to use it as a tool to help my parishioners to better understand Jesus’ words about salt and light, and to apply them introspectively to their own lives, right here and now. The spectacle of a government agency digging into a Catholic college’s claims about its religious identity and practice seemed wonderfully useful for this purpose. At the same time, however, I did read and think about both the NLRB’s document, and Manhattan College’s press release in response; and I do have some brief observations to make directly to that situation. And I have to say that I find Manhattan College’s response, however “eloquent,” to be quite a red herring; and I would urge you to think more carefully about what both sides are saying, and not just jump blindly to the defense of alma mater. Love means desiring the good of the loved one; and one thing we should desire of the loved one is that they be honest and truthful. As the NLRB summarizes in their document, they have a mandate from the government that involves overseeing and taking certain actions related to labor organizing within certain organizations/businesses. But they have a big exception: a “church-operated school” is exempt from their jurisdiction. Why? Because, as we can well imagine, and as they explain, if a school is truly governed by a church organization, is funded by it, sets goals of indoctrinating its students in belief and practice, and imposes requirements of belief and practice when hiring its employees– well, there is no way for the NLRB to do its labor-related job in such an institution without becoming entangled in religion, and so it is just supposed to stay out. So, the NLRB has concluded that Manhattan College does not qualify as a “church-operated school.” Which seems like an obviously correct conclusion to me, based upon what I read. Now, Manhattan College has responded that it is being a good Catholic college, and the NLRB just doesn’t understand what a Catholic college is, and is bringing in foreign concepts about how it should be indoctrinating etc. But that is a red herring. It is the NLRB’s mandate and definitions that are in question here. It is Manhattan College that has been claiming that it meets the NLRB’s definition of a “church-operated school.” And it seems clear that it does not meet this definition. Why then is Manhattan College trying to claim this? And why, when the truth is pointed out, is it trying to cloud the issue? (Do you notice that, in both the press release and the president’s letter, the key NLRB phrase “church-operated school” is never used once?) And why, still further, is it trying to evade the NLRB’s oversight in the first place? In trying to evade some sort of labor organizing, is it acting contrary to Catholic teaching on the just treatment of labor? I ask these questions rhetorically. Of course it doesn’t want government interference; no one does. Of course it doesn’t want to deal with a union; no one does. But it doesn’t seem to be scoring high in being truthful, as far as I can see. Have you read the NLRB document? I knew you were away from your OOO message. And, yes, I did read the NLRB “decision”. My consternation with the whole affair is that no one has expressed how the adjuncts are being mistreated. Why should there be a union in the first place? If the MC Administration is doing something terrible, then the alumni would be interested. I can understand why “liberals” would like to have a “union” on a Catholic College so as to enforce its beliefs upon the “victim”. As far as I can tell, no one has asserted that MC is not treating its “labor” fairly (i.e., in any way contrary to Church teaching). I think I’ve already hit my best points: (1) jurisdiction of the NLRB; (2) their competence in deciding what’s “catholic enough”; and (3) the First Amendment. Having been forced to fight in the Gooferment’s dojo, one can’t complain when one fights with the only weapons one has. The NLRB can’t be allowed to define the vocabulary (i.e., “church run whatever”); the First Amendment trumps the NLRB. If the Archdiocese of New York hasn’t “de-listed” MC, then I’d assert that it meets the “Catholic enough” standard. As far as the homily, I’m sure that it always hard to explain “salt” to Americans who probably never have had salt go bad. The exemplar might better be America after the War of Northern Aggression. That was the turning point of “government interference”. You say that no one wants it, but I’m not so sure that’s true. When there are more “takers” than “earners”? When there is such a thing as an “illegal alien”? And when the Government “kills” The Church with its diktats. The “salt” of the great American Experiment is tasteless.
