And in 2007, after her son Charlie lost his battle with a rare form of lymphoma at just 27, she added triathlons, raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Now, less than two months before she turns 60, Crapella has completed two Ironman triathlons of 70 miles each and is running out of challenges, at least on relatively level ground. So right now, she’s on her way to take a very long hike on a very tall mountain — Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Since she’s never even gone camping before, she admits, “This will be outside my comfort zone.” She left Saturday to join others who will be climbing to raise money for the American Cancer Society. They’ve all been touched by cancer’s devastating toll and are taking on the challenge as a vehicle to keep loved ones’ memories alive and fund efforts to find a cure for the killer disease. *** end quote *** Baird, Bob (MC1969) [JR: Some people see a challenge and run towards it. Mar 6, 2011 JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) libertarianism, an excuse not to payDear Jasper John,No, I can not prove that the GI Bill produced the best of all possible worlds- no one can prove that about anything. But you certainly can not prove that a world without government would be best. Thomas Hobbes said that life in the natural state involved . “No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” Thomas Jefferson wrote that “to secure these (unalienable rights of life and liberty) governments are instituted among men” Anarchy does not work and never has – people need rules to live by and governments are needed to enforce the rules and indeed enforce our rights- there will always be people who want to deny rights to others and take everything- without governments we would have to defend ourselves against these people and live in constant fear. Taxes are needed to support any government and are as Justice Homes said “the price we pay for civilization”. Everyone has to pay a share of the “overhead”- libertarians do not seem to understand that basic economic principle. I have always suspected that libertarianism is more an excuse not to pay a fair share and less a logically sustainable system. The “immorality” of taxing the populace to pay for the education of men and women who went to war is lost on me!! They paid much more than they received by any rational measure. It is also true that governments are not required when men decide to form armies and plunder and persecute others. The Roman Catholic Church had its own armies and used them to conduct what many consider genocide early in the 13th century when they massacred the Cathars. Later when Protestant armies were dominant the government often served to protect Catholics from being massacred by Protestants in the British Colonies in America. For a discussion of “the broken window fallacy” see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_broken_window Sincerely yours, Donald M Stebbins BS 1961 [JR: <1> So we have disposed of the assertion that the GI Bill was this great boon to everyone including MC because it can't be proved. Likewise, we can't prove that the absence of Gooferment would be "best". "Best" implies a universally agreed yardstick. <2> "Life in the natural state" was referring to an uncooperating human race. Hairless weak people running around with clubs and spears. Or, maybe he was talking about the human race with Kings and Tyrants. Gooferment merely hides the tyranny with out the face of the King for us to protest against. <3> Anarchy has been tried in certain instances: Iceland in the Middle Ages; the American Wild West; and the current day Somalia. Ugly but interesting. It may NOT be as horrendous as you think. As far as "taking everything", the current Gooferment is doing a pretty good job of that now. <4> Sorry, but my Mom and the Good Nuns told me not to steal. Taxes are theft. I didn't agree to pay for Gooferment. So how did I incur this obligation? If I order a good or service, I'll pay for it. Pay for civilization? I don't think so. I'm paying for Nancy Pelosi's trips home first class. And for people to go kill innocent people and break things. Everyone saying that I said for them to go do it. <5> "Fair share"? As figured by who. "Overhead"? Please don't make me laugh. At least, in the days of Kings and Tyrants, the elite didn't pretend to be doing it for our own good and that of the children. <6> The Church has its own sins to atone for; I just worry about mine.] [JR: I just remembered that Jefferson, whom you quoted as the authority, said I could abolish the Gooferment when it doesn't preserve rights. Correct? How do I exercise that option? Didn't work out so well for the Confederacy. Gooferment IS the meme that kills its subjects.] # # # # # posted 2011-03-06 21:23 |

Paluszek set out to examine the realms of marketing and public relations that he has learned through his many years of experience by sharing his knowledge with the Manhattan College community. He discussed the practices that Ketchum professionals, who support the company’s brands and products, provide for their clients worldwide. In particular, Paluszek’s area of expertise falls within corporate social responsibility, which he says is very important to consumers today when choosing to invest in a brand. Paluszek also pointed out that social media is transforming the consumer and brand relationship in public relations because it has created an interactive platform that connects both sides. He stressed to the audience the importance of understanding these developing media channels in order to stay current on the changes within the industry. “Mr. Paluszek emphasized the importance of integrated marketing communications and provided students with real-world examples from his considerable work experience,” said Brian Korney ’11, president of the marketing club. After advising the corporate leaders of tomorrow, Paluszek, a Manhattan alumnus, an emeritus member of the College’s board of trustees and chair of the communication department’s board of advisors, commented on his own experiences at Manhattan. “A number of us came from a modest background and gained a sense of maturity and self-confidence because of what Manhattan provided in terms of the opportunity for expression and exposure to people who were very experienced as teachers and alumni,” Paluszek said. “We benefited and it’s only fair that we would want to provide some sort of an opportunity, at least with our colleagues, who work at Manhattan.” March 7, 2011 Featured News Item # – # – # Paluszek, John [MC1955] [JR: Who's the patron saint of Marketing? Mar 9, 2011 JHQ: MC partnership with CollegeBound Initiativehttp://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/030111_1.shtmlMarch 1, 2011 MANHATTAN COLLEGE FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH COLLEGEBOUND INITIATIVE RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College is proud to announce its newly formed partnership with CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) launching in fall 2011. CBI is a school-based college guidance program that helps students in inner-city public schools reach their potential and attend college. The partnership further represents the College’s commitment to educating first-generation college students rooted in Manhattan’s Lasallian Catholic traditions. “Manhattan College is excited to collaborate with the CollegeBound Initiative considering our common goals of providing first-generation college bound students with opportunities to extend their academic talents beyond the high school classroom,” said William J. Bisset, Jr., vice president for enrollment management at Manhattan. “Since the College’s founding in 1853, Manhattan’s mission has focused on providing a student-centered undergraduate experience and is very consistent with what the CollegeBound Initiative looks for in its partner institutions.” The CollegeBound Initiative collaborates with public high schools by placing full-time college counselors in the schools to interact with students and make them more aware of the various college options available including financial aid assistance and scholarships. In the next school year, CBI will serve nearly 800 seniors in 13 schools in New York City and Philadelphia. Since 2001, CBI has operated in coed and single-sex public schools and has a demonstrated track record of success with 95 percent of CBI graduating seniors being accepted to college (over 4,000 students). In addition, CBI has generated more than $48 million in financial aid and scholarships to make higher education affordable. CBI is a program of the Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN). In fact, YWLN also supports The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS), a network of all-girls public high schools, including TYWLS of East Harlem, the program’s flagship school. From the June 2010 graduates of TYWLS of East Harlem, 100 percent were accepted to college. As a university partner with CBI, Manhattan will gain assistance in further diversifying the College’s student body, allowing students to receive a first-rate education that they may not have had access to without the program’s resources. “CBI is thrilled to partner with Manhattan College in an effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students having post-secondary success,” said Jon Roure, director of CBI. “We have already seen our students reap the benefits of the support and resources offered at this fine institution by way of the undergraduate and graduate degrees that our alumni have earned, and we look forward to developing outreach initiatives and on-campus supports with the college to ensure more students are on the right path to securing their dream of a college degree.” # # # # # posted 2011-03-09 08:27 |

Mar 9, 2011 MFOUND: MC appoints Dr. Mehnaz M. Afrididi to the Holocaust Study Centerhttp://bovinabloviator.blogspot.com/2011/03/manhattan-college-gets-religionsort-of.htmlMONDAY, MARCH 07, 2011 Manhattan College Gets Religion…Sort Of *** begin quote *** Now, according to the Riverdale Review, a local newspaper (no link available), it appears the administration of Manhattan College has acknowledged religion does indeed play a part in this putatively Catholic institution and to that end has announced the appointment of a new director of the college’s Holocaust Study Center, Dr. Mehnaz M. Afrididi, a Muslim woman, whose appointment the college justifies on the basis of her “enormous amount of interfaith experience.” Just what is in the collective bong these days at Manhattan College? Even if a small Catholic college in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in a predominantly Jewish city, where there already exists a widely acclaimed Holocaust museum and memorial less than a hour’s ride from the campus on the IRT Broadway Local, can somehow justify allocating scarce resources to a small-time version of same in the Bronx, wouldn’t it make a certain degree of sense to appoint a Jew to head it? At least one scholar thinks so. From the Riverdale Review: *** and *** Yes indeed, and to the multiculturalist administrators of Manhattan College, for whom religions are fungible (religion-schmigion!), the opportunity to earn double PC points by appointing a Muslim woman to head an institution for the study of an event uniquely identified with Jewish history must have proved to be irresistible. *** end quote *** [JR: Ouch, that's harsh. Mar 10, 2011 MNEWS: Rohrssen fired; MC acts like its competitionhttp://www.gojaspers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=12500&ATCLID=205112857Manhattan Announces Change in Men’s Basketball Program Release: 03/09/2011 Barry Rohrssen Released as Jaspers’ Head Coach after Five Seasons at the Helm RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Barry Rohrssen has been relieved of his duties as head men’s basketball coach at Manhattan as announced by Director of Athletics Robert Byrnes. A search for a successor will begin immediately. “Barry is a true gentleman who has represented Manhattan College very well,” explained Byrnes. “As we make a difficult decision to move the program forward, we remain committed to the academic and personal, as well as the athletic development of our student athletes. We wish Barry well and thank him for his service.” # – # – # [JR: I had a spirited discussion about this topic with fellow alums on FACEBOOK. In part, I questioned what MC's objectives should be when playing College Basketball. Permit me to give you the gist of it here. In a spirit defense of "principles".] “58-95 while at MC” But, is the objective to “win” games? Or, to learn a larger lesson? Or, is the real objective to live out out version of morality. To serve public witness that we are following a different vision of what its right and proper and invite other to travel that path with us? Face it MC is never going to be a bball powerhouse. Nor should it be given the current rules of engagement. Coach Rohrssen should be measured on: graduation rate, grades, sportsmanship, teamwork, how they represent MC to the world … the important stuff. Or do alums want fellow Jaspers who can’t read and can only dribble a bball? Argh! (I ranted about Bobby G and his antics despite his winning and results.) This fat old white guy injineer wants to be thin, young, and handsome. But like MC winning the NCAA, it ain’t gonna happen. It’s unrealistic to expect that MC can compete against the semi-pro illiterates who are virtual slaves to the NCAA and its coaching coconspirators. It’s like putting in a high school football team into play against any NFL team. Coaching has very little to do with anything. Any “success” by an MC bball team will be luck and sneaking up on some one overlooking them. I have blogged about I think it was Arkansas winning the NCAA but their graduation rate was under 10% and they were sued by one of their “graduates” sued for being an illiterate. The NCAA basketball offering is about money. Pure and simple. “Schools”, or organizations purporting to be schools, suck in young poor black men, with the illusion that they can make it to the NBA, supposedly compensate them for their effort with an “education”, create all sorts of “rules” to supposedly keep the game amateur, collect millions operating a meat grinder, all to support the illusion of amateur “Student Athletes”. The only part that’s “amateur” is that the players don’t get paid. And, they said Lincoln freed the slaves. That was an illusion too. (Doesn’t anyone find it funny peculiar that you can watch all white student body cheering for their “team” that is all black?) The fact that most of the top sports programs are State funded schools further illustrates the arena that MC is completing against. The deck is stack in sports, and in the economics of free public education. MC will succeed only be being unique and offering that something that I think makes my fellow Jasper “good people”. Sorry, but I think MC is missing a chance to be outstanding and reform the NCAA by embarrassing the NCAA into reform. Firing a Coach, for not winning, is imho morally wrong. When the NCAA sanctions Schools for “student athletes” being illiterate, then maybe it’s be OK. Till then, have no doubt, it’s about money. Nothing else. To play their game is a mistake. Maybe the NLRB is correct. [JR: Sorry to rant in a news item, but an ENDNOTE would be too late and too little. And, I apologize to my fellow Jaspers here and on FACEBOOK if this comes off "holier than thou". Here's my minority opinion. Like that movie line, "We're better than that". I think MC is better than that.] # # # # # posted 2011-03-10 04:58 |

Mar 12, 2011 ENDNOTE: Stop the cycle of prostitutionhttp://goo.gl/TKwj6Filipino sisters seek to rescue women from sex trade By Christine Bordelon *** begin quote *** New Orleans, La., Feb 20, 2011 / 01:00 pm (CNA).- Imagine a nun going undercover, walking the streets at night rescuing women and children caught in the world of human trafficking. That’s what the Immaculate Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries do every day in the Philippines, said Sister Irene Baquiran, a founding member who was in the Archdiocese of New Orleans last week drumming up support for her order. *** and *** Sister Irene said the Philippines ranks fourth of the top 10 countries with prostituted children, so the need to rescue victims is great. The prostitutes range in age from 15-20, but some are as young as 8 years old. They are forced into five to 10 sexual encounters nightly (at a wage of 100 pesos or $2 for each encounter). Most are drugged by their pimps to endure the horror and so are also hooked on narcotics. “We found out that evil in society is so cunning,” she said. *** and *** To counter poverty at its roots, the sisters also go into the same remote mountain villages where pimps recruit females, promising good paying city jobs. Instead of prostitution, the sisters offer food, education, medical assistance and job skills. They have been doing this since 2007 in a pilot program, Feeding of the Good Shepherd Foundation. “We are trying to educate them to stop the cycle of prostitution from proliferating,” she said. “After three years, we found that there was zero prostitution in the area.” *** end quote *** [JR: OK, maybe I'm a sucker for efforts that seek to drain any moral swamp. I'm reminded of Father Ritter saying to a class of injineers to stop spouting philosophy and come help him do something about the problem. He eventually was consumed with the sleaze. But he started the fight. Maybe if my fellow Jaspers have a few dollars to spare we can help these good Nuns fight this fight. http://goo.gl/FTQN6 When I see women oppressed by the hajib and the attitudes of men. When I see women and children exploited for sex. When I see good people not enraged by this injustice. I just shake my head and wonder. Then, I try to get back in the fight. All I have is a few modest weapons. Perhaps those that profit from misery need a little "civil action" applied to them. Shunning by their neighbors might be a good start? Peaceful non-violence goes without saying. But action is required. imho. Hopefully this note will induce you to read about these Nuns. Perhaps if it wasn't illegal, then we could get it out of the back alleys and actually stop it. Making it illegal clearly hasn't worked! Argh! Frustration.] # # # # # |
