POSITRACTION: “For the real battle is not with … …”

Catholic police officer remembered for living out faith
By John Shaughnessy

*** begin quote ***

Scifres read Moore’s quote from the 1999 football yearbook. He then shared the remarkable prayer that Moore wrote and delivered at Roncalli’s all-sports banquet in the spring of 2000.

The prayer of a champion

“Dear Lord,

“We are gathered here tonight in your name to honor those athletes who have not only taken the field for Roncalli, but who have taken to the battlefield for you.

“It is not always on the sports field that we do our battle, but on the field of everyday life. We do not battle for the goals nor the touchdowns, or the blue rings, but for the cross that we will carry to you.

“Allow not our memories to be filled by the highlight tapes or the dazzling plays, but instead by the prayers that began our games and the huddles we made to praise you after our victories and even our defeats.

“Let us not only think it was the weight of the iron in the weight room or the long hours at practice that made us victorious, but the weight of the cross and the hours on our knees that made us great.

“As for the seniors who have taken off their Roncalli jersey for the last time, help us remember that the competition has just begun. For the real battle is not with the pigskin or the round ball, but with the crosses that you have laid upon us.

“Allow us to be coached by your love, and let all of us give you, our true coach, 110 percent. That is where we will find the true meaning of a champion.

“In the name of your Son, Christ Jesus, we ask this blessing. Amen.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: Wow, having just been given one of those things “that you have laid upon us”, it’s a heavy burden. Some are called to carry much bigger ones than I have been given. Guess we are truly only given what we can carry. I just know that my fellow alums are carrying greater burdens than I am. Maybe if they need some help, they’ll let me. My burden is much lighter, reflecting my weaker character and capacity. I’ve been developing.]

I’m a Jasper Class of 1968 Electrical & Electronic Engineering. I’d suggest Manhattan, but that’s not really important.

You have to realize that this is probably the single most important decision that you will make.

So, you should not be asking for input from random strangers.

“It’s not the depth of the well that determines how much water you’ll carry away; it’s the size of the bucket you bring.”

You need to do MORE research into your decision.

May I suggest that you call and make an appointment with Robert Mauro, the department head? And, have him explain why Manhattan is best for you.

Drop me a message if you need further contact info at jasper at reinke dot cc and I’ll get it right back to you.

Good luck,

Bolz, Charles R. [MC1976]

[Dear fellow alum Charles76: You're most welcome. This is my modest effort to pass along new, even sad news, to our fellow alums in a more timely method than the College's print publication. It may, in fact, give old classmates a chance to "action" the obit. I know I've heard that some have made the wake or funeral of a dear old "lost" friend, sent a card, written an entry in the Legacy Guest Book, or even just said a timely prayer. I've even had family members ask me to put them in contact with old chums, or just use me as "listener" to their grief. Having just lost a loved one, (several ones, in fact three, in row -- tough year), I can appreciate the value of having folks around. If I may be of any service, please just ask and I'll do my best. I am a NJ Notary; that might be useful? I can only offer you the words I've heard a lot lately: "I am truly sorry for OUR loss." I'd have liked to have captured your Dad's song more completely than an obit for our fellow alums. (I am a fan of Steven Covey's formulation that "The Universe means One Song", and we each have a role singing in the chorus.) Feel free to share your Dad's story and yours in Jasper Jottings. I've had feedback from readers that that type of message is most valuable. Although I find it hard to believe that anything could be more valuable than my 'Endnote' of ranting and raving at the end of each week's ezine. Hope this made you laugh. Donna Nobis Pacem, fjohn68]

[JR: In all the time I've been doing this, this is one of those times when I've gotten a personal response. Not that a response is needed; it's just nice to know that some one reads my scrawl. I'm humbled to be considered to posting "on behalf of the MC community". I'll be more careful, after today, with my spelling. I am, after all, only a fat old white guy injineer, who barely passed. For me to be writing anything, let alone "in behalf of", seems to be the height of hubris, arrogance, and stupidity. But since no one volunteers to take it over, I guess we're all stuck with me and my insomnia. It doesn't seem so lonely in the wee hours (0230) when I'm sitting at the Jasper Jottings Over-night News Desk in the Virtual Jasper Jottings Newsroom. Let us remember we are in ... ... JHQ: “Strengthening Haiti ~ After the Earthquake” 3/29@1600

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/031411_1.shtml

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES SPEAKER TO DISCUSS HAITI RECOVERY ON MARCH 29

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Jude Marie Banatte, M.D., head of programming for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), is coming to Manhattan College on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 4:00 p.m. to share his personal story of helping to rebuild Haiti. Strengthening Haiti ~ After the Earthquake is open to the public and will be held in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library.

Immediately after last year’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, Banatte and a CRS team from the Les Cayes office in the southern part of Haiti filled their trucks with emergency supplies and navigated the dangerous rubble-strewn roads to Port-au-Prince. As soon as Banatte and his team arrived in Port-au-Prince, they went to Hospital St. Francois de Sales, the city’s main medical facility, to recover medical supplies and pushed to get the hospital up and running as soon as possible.

“It’s easy to lose sight of our neighbors’ struggles when the story is gone from the front page, and Dr. Banatte’s visit to Manhattan helps keep the continuing struggle in Haiti at the forefront of our minds,” said Lois Harr, director of campus ministry and social action at Manhattan College.

Banatte’s history with CRS, the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community, spans 11 years in Haiti. As the head of programming for CRS, he has managed a variety of large-scale agricultural and health development projects.

For more information on the event, please contact Lois Harr by phone at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu.

JHQ: Students Travel to Ecuador To Give Back

http://www.manhattan.edu/news_and_events/featured/03_14_11_1.shtml

Students Travel to Ecuador To Give Back

In January, 11 students and two staff members from Manhattan College’s Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L. O. V. E.) program spent eight days in Ecuador volunteering in partnership with Rostro de Cristo, a Catholic volunteer and retreat program based in Durán, Ecuador. The program strives to provide a life-changing experience for young people from the United States to connect with the people of Ecuador through their common faith and collaborate on long-term solutions to end poverty and to improve the lives of the people.

Once the Manhattan volunteers arrived at their residence in Ecuador, they organized an intentional Christian community with shared meals and nightly reflection. They lived very simply throughout the eight days taking military-style showers and eating on less than $2 per day in order to be in solidarity with the people of Ecuador, for whom these are daily realities.

During their trip, the Manhattan group visited and spent time with children at three after-school programs run by Rostro de Cristo including Valdevia, Semillas de Mostaza and Manos Abiertas. In addition, the group met with patients at Damien House, a hospital for people affected by Hansen’s Disease, and also went to Nuevo Mundo, a prestigious private school in Ecuador that uses tuition money from affluent students to fund an afternoon school for poor students.

To learn more about their experience in Ecuador, check out the video. http://goo.gl/oxHnF

But then everything I was seeing and reading seemed to slow to a stop as one Facebook post made this cataclysmic event suddenly very personal. It was my cousin Peggy’s status about her son Sean’s wife Ai, who is from Japan. You see, her family lives in Sendai, the capital of the Miyagi prefecture. While she had heard briefly from her father, there were many others from whom she still has not heard.

Sendai should sound familiar. According to news reports, the tsunami which hit the city’s port was 10 meters high. That’s over 30 feet. Many of the worst images we’ve seen have come from this region – the airport underwater, houses and cars washed out to sea, some of them in flames.

All I can think of is Ai seeing those same pictures, waiting to hear about her family. My whole family shares her pain as we send our thoughts and prayers to her and all those affected by this catastrophic event.

The season will be completed, one way or the other, either tonight or tomorrow for the Middlebury (VT) College men’s basketball team—and quite a season it has been under veteran coach Jeff Brown.

*** and ***

“The last four (seasons) have been our best years ever up here, or any team I’ve been involved with as a coach,” Brown said. “Three years ago we won 19, then 24, and last year 25. This year we had 28; it clearly was our best season.”

A Manhattan College graduate where he was an assistant to Gordon Chiesa, the former coach at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Brown has had several mentors on the trail to success. “I was very young and inexperienced at Manhattan” Brown remembers. “I learned a ton of basketball from Gordon those first three years.” Brown’s next job was as the University of Vermont, spending eight years with the celebrated Tom Brennan. “Tom was a terrific motivator, had a great way, personable in his coaching,” Brown noted. “He gave his assistants a lot of responsibility.” Brown also fondly recalls the Houstons of Pearl River, Kevin and Jerry, and Joe McGuinness, the athletic director at Albertus Magnus who was Brown’s classmate and friend at Clarkstown South.

In past years Tom Collins would either be marching in, or attending the state’s second-largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Pearl River.

He has done so ever since he was a student at Manhattan College in the 1960’s.

This Sunday, however, Collins has a prior engagement in upstate Glens Falls that prevents him from continuing the enviable streak.

Collins will be one of eleven individuals, including nine coaches, will be inducted into the NYS Basketball Hall of Fame, which is conducted by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.

Mike Deeson

The toll taker tells Chandler this is what happens when they get large bills. She says this is what they have to do. Chandler says to the toll taker, “So I’m being detained?” She says yes sir.

[JR: The story is a great expose of Gooferment gone wild. It has all the elements of a good conspiracy. And, some bureaucrats should be in jail for the cover up.]
