I was on holiday in Cornwall in August when, while walking in a car park with a friend, I felt really weird. I was having a cardiac arrest.
I literally collapsed and died, there and then on the tarmac, age 47.
As my friend was trying to figure out what was happening, a stranger driving out of the car park stopped, having seen me lying on the ground, and asked my friend if I was OK. The stranger and his passenger got out of the car and came over to where I was lying. They immediately realised what had happened and took over.
They were both consultants from Plymouth’s A&E Department at Derriford Hospital. The driver happened to have the only piece of equipment that could bring me back to life – a portable defibrillator – in his car. After three-and-a-half minutes of being dead, he had me conscious and I was immediately airlifted to Treliske hospital.

LENOX – Phillip A. Formel, the patriarch of the Formel family in Berkshire County, and a well-known general contractor, passed away at his home in Lenox on Thursday, March 17th, 2011.
Phillip Adrian Formel was born January 28th, 1923, in Pittsfield, son of Fernando Augustus Formel and Lillian Smithson Formel. His father died when Phillip was just 4 years old, and he was raised by his mother, Lillian. He was a devout Roman Catholic and worshipped at St Mark’s church where he was an altar boy for many years. He attended Pittsfield Public Elementary schools, and St. Joseph High School, where he was quarterback on the football team and graduated in 1941. Despite a burning desire to better himself, he had little hope of attending college because of financial reasons, and began working at the GE immediately after graduating. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Horse Cavalry, which still existed at the start of the War. As a boy, he had worked on horse farms and as a goalie judge for the local Pittsfield Horse Polo team, which explained his interest in the Horse Cavalry. Shortly after he joined the Calvary, it was disbanded and he was reassigned to the Army Postal Service in Alaska. His duties there kept him on the road for many days at a time as a liaison to the outlying post offices, and he was full of stories about traveling through what at that time was really a frontier. He was accepted into the Army Engineering school and attended Texas A&M, Manhattan College and Siena College, until the engineering program was abandoned and he was assigned to the 69th Infantry and was shipped to England in 1944. From England he was sent to France during the Battle of the Bulge, and from there pushed continuously through France, Belgium and Germany, participating, in amongst others, the Battle for Liepzig. He was proud of his service, and thankful for and took advantage of the opportunity to go to college after the War.
Upon returning to the states, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Haskins, beginning a lifelong love affair, and they moved to Lansing, MI, where he graduated from Michigan State as a Mechanical Engineer, in 1950. The young couple moved back to the Berkshires and had a house built on Barker Road in Pittsfield, where they began their family, which produced 15 children.
After a short stint with National Radiator, and several years with Pittsfield General Electric, he began, with his cousin, a General Construction firm, based in Pittsfield. His projects were generally highly technical industrial jobs. In 1959, the company moved to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, where he built a nuclear test reactor at the University of Mayaguez, and a salt water reactor for the government in Rincon. He returned to the United States in 1960, bought out his cousin, and built a construction and metal fabrication yard in Housatonic in 1962. During this time, he took on the civic duty of being the Building Inspector in Lenox, and put the town’s building code in place.
He kept close ties with Puerto Rico, and in 1974, again moved to Puerto Rico and continued his construction business there, performing primarily industrial and commercial construction. In 1981, together with some of his children, he began an interisland Maritime Shipping firm, owning and operating his own cargo ships. He left Puerto Rico in 1995 and returned to Lenox where he built two houses for himself and a number of condominiums in Lenox, as light work during his “retirement” years. He also had a house built in Homestead, Fla. where he and Norma resided.
He was a devout communicant at St Ann’s Church in Lenox.
He was a brilliant, loving and serious man, and left a large footprint on our Earth. He will be missed by all who had the chance to know him.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Haskins Formel of Lenox, his 15 children, Michael Albert of Columbus, MS, Stephen Fernando of Claverack, NY, Phillip A. Jr. of Homestead, FL, Eugenie Formel of Becket, Shaun Joseph of Searcy, AR, Ann Frances Formel of North Chatham, NY, Mark Anselm of Great Barrington, Norma Frances Formel of York, PA, Kristina Marie Burkhart of Averill Park, NY, Brian Damian of Great Barrington, Richard Murray of Gainesville, FL, Paul Gilbert of Geneva, FL, Mary Formel Woodger of Stockbridge, Fernanda Meagher of Piedmont, CA, and Matthew James Joseph of New Orleans, LA.; 60 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and his four siblings, Eugenie Phillips of Pittsfield, Dr. Paul Formel of Albany, NY, John Formel of Chicago, Il, and Robert Formel of Peachtree, GA.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Monday morning at 10 am from the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 1-4.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Formel’s memory may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society in care of the funeral home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.

Bishop Ahern died Saturday at the Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan at the age of 92 — the 41st anniversary of his ordination.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – In honor of James Luther Adams, a theologian and social ethicist, Manhattan College will host the 15th annual James Luther Adams Forum on religion and society on Thursday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall. John Wilcox, Ph.D., director for the Center of Lasallian Studies at Manhattan College and professor emeritus of religious studies, will speak on the topic, Together and by Association: The Legacy of James Luther Adams and the Future of Religious Colleges and Universities.
Wilcox will discuss the challenges facing colleges and universities sponsored by religious congregations and dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as by those educational institutions sponsored by mainline Christian denominations. As members of the congregations and clergy continue to decline in numbers on the Catholic campuses, these colleges and universities are in danger of losing their Catholic culture and the religious heritage of the founding congregation.
By connecting James Luther Adams’ theory of voluntary associations, religious congregations and the institutional future of all religious colleges and universities, Wilcox will propose a new living endowment, the mission community — a contemporary voluntary association. Wilcox, a former Marist brother, is the author of one of the two monographs on Adams titled Taking Time Seriously: James Luther Adams (1978), and is an author and co-author of several books about religious higher education.
Gary Dorrien, Ph.D., Reinhold Niebuhr professor of social ethics at Union Theological Seminary and professor of religion at Columbia University, will also serve as the respondent of the forum. He has written about Adams particularly in his book The Making of American Liberal Theology: Crisis, Irony, & Postmodernity 1950-2005.

Dear John,The Winter/Spring Edition of The Mount Letter, the Alumni News Letter for Mount Saint Michael Academy, has the following article on the late Warren Donohue, Esq.’42:
Last spring the Mount received an extraordinary bequest of $142,712 from the estate of Warren Donohue from the Class of 1938. These funds will be used to support students at the Mount who otherwise would forfeit a Mount education due to financial hardship.
Such support for today’s students reflects the kindness that the Mount offered Warren when he was a student. Warren followed his older brother Vincent ’37 into the Mount (Vincent’s tuition was paid by two generous aunts). As noted by his brother Tom (Class of 1944, a scholarship student), “Warren was dependent on the good will of the then Principal to forgive or reduce his tuition and my mother made annual or semi-annual pilgrimages to the Mount to plead her case and, grace of that Brother’s kindness, she somehow got together enough tuition to get Warren through.”
In addition to Warren’s gift to the Mount, he made a similar gift to Manhattan College where he was awarded a scholarship and graduated. It should be noted that he graduated in three and a half years, after which he joined the Navy’s war effort, serving as an officer on a sub-chaser in the Atlantic. He was promoted to Executive Officer, serving through 11 invasion landings. After the war, he attended NYU Law School, from which he earned a J.D. in 1950; wrote for the NY Daily News as a freelancer, and launched an advertising career as the founder and principal of Warren Donohue Associates.
As he racked up accomplishments, he never forgot the Mount or Manhattan College. So when he began planning his estate, he decided to give other young men a leg up in the exact way he was helped: through financial aid. He established funding to specifically provide support to young men who graduate from Mt. St. Michael Academy and attend Manhattan College. Thus current Mount Students might enjoy a great educational experience over eight years. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving!
I thought that this was a piece that was worth reproducing as an example of how some people do not forget kindnesses!
In the same issue is an article by and other Jasper, Joseph Cammalleri, ’56 (Mount St Michael 1952) about his years as a boarder at the Mount.
Of course I must disclose that I am a proud 1949 graduate of the Mount.

[JR: Thanks, Mike. Much appreciated. Clearly humbling. While people throw around "the greatest generation" loosely, and I definitely quibble with their politics, what is amazing is their character. Holy Mother Church has made many mistakes in my lifetime, but the biggest, or maybe second biggest, was to permit the destruction of the Catholic School system. These were the "foundries" that created great people. Discipline, Honor, Humility, I see all those virtues in the above story. I wonder what will become of future generations when these great people pass away. We go from Titans to midgets. From literate, to illiterate. From "we give Thee thanks for all we have been given" to "what's in it for me", "I'm entitled", and the ever present cultural epithet. Or course, I'm please to push this story out on the wire. Humbled and saddened. But pleased.]

Manhattan College is pleased to present The First Annual Tournées French Film Festival. The theme of the 2011 French film festival is Crossing Borders. We open the festival with the film, Two Days in Paris by Julie Delpy, and then Welcome by Philippe Lioret, 35 Rhums by Claire Denis, Bamako by Abderrahmane Sissako and we end the festival with Entre les murs by Laurent Cantet. Faculty on the organizing committee will introduce the films and conduct a discussion after each showing.
The organizing committee consists of faculty from a variety of disciplines at Manhattan College: Samira Hassa (French), Evelyn Scaramella (Spanish), Meg Toth (English) and Nonie Wanger (French).

Dear Jasper John,You left out some important facts when you condemned “gooferment” for the toll booth “detainment”. This includes the fact that Chandler was baiting the toll takers and was the initiator of talk about detainment.
I’ll bet if you tested private stores and restaurants and tried to pay a 50 cent charge with a 100 dollar bill you might find far worse consequences. Chandler was looking for trouble and eventually found it. That proves nothing. Chandler says it is a serious crime to detain someone without proper legal authority. It is interesting to note that under this interpretation of the law, a store owner or employee has no legal right to detain a shoplifter leaving his store and would have to watch the perpetrator go or face serious criminal charges.

[JR: Well, in fair use of the story, I only quoted the first paragraph to "tease" people into reading it. I'd don't think "left out" is a fair criticism. Don't you see a difference between a private business, a corporation, a Gooferment agency, and the Gooferment itself? Especially in the areas of size of bill and detaining a suspect. I sure do. But then, Law "degree" from watching Judge Judy. As far as "baiting", I guess then MLK was "baiting" the owners of segregated lunch counters. And, Parks should have just quietly sat at the back of the bus. Some movie or other had the line, "The objective of civil disobedience is to provoke a response." And, I take rhetorical note that you didn't talk about the cover up and lies in the Gooferment's response. We just view the world differently: you see the Gooferment as your friend; I see it as a brutal killer. Even when we're lucky and it doesn't kill us outright, it kills us by deception. Kills our progeny's minds with its brainwashing, our initiative with a grazillion diktats, and our eventually our dreams of better with its oppressive taxes. Welcome to the "oppressed" side of Johari's window. The Keystone Kops cover up was pretty funny though.]

Eliza (Cavanagh) Praetorius, 65, died Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Benedictine Hospital. Born May 8, 1945 in Boston, MA, she was a daughter of the late George and Margery Smith Cavanagh. She grew up in Scituate, graduated from Thayer Academy and Manhattan College. She was a published author of poetry and novels. She composed music and played the piano. She co-wrote a musical “Minka Ray”, which was performed in Florida and later became a book. Surviving are her daughter, Summer Praetorius of Oregon, son Jebsen Praetorius of Saugerties; five brothers, George, William, Charles, Nick and Tom Cavanagh, a sister Diedre Cavanagh; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, Rte. 212, Woodstock, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of Lasher Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Tinker St., Woodstock, NY.

Whiz Kid Accomplishment: After applying for the Modern Foreign Language Scholarship offered by Manhattan College, Maria Aveiga was one of fifteen winners chosen from a pool of 90 applicants. She was awarded a four-year scholarship that includes tuition, room and board, to attend the Roman Catholic, liberal arts college located in Riverdale, NY.

“I did not expect this. I was so surprised to learn that I actually won this scholarship,” she says. “My mother was crying when we found out.”

“I am so excited to go to Manhattan College and I am prepared to study and learn a lot,” she says. Plans for the immediate future, this Whiz Kid says, include a major in International Relations and minor in Italian. “I would like to have a career as a diplomat and work to address issues of poverty in Ecuador and other places around the world.”

RIFM announced the appointment of Christina Hickey to its postdoctoral scientist position. Hickey will be the fourth scientist to hold the training position, which has been customized specifically for the fragrance industry. In May, she will receive her doctorate in environmental medicine health sciences with a concentration in inhalation toxicology from New York University. She received her BS in biology, with minors in chemistry and psychology, from Manhattan College. Hickey also was an adjunct professor at Manhattan College and previously served as a research assistant at there, assisting with developmental genetics research, and at the Bronx Zoo Animal Health Center, Bronx, NY.

PITTSFIELD —- John A. Mullin, Sr., passed away peacefully at his home early Thursday morning, March 24, 2011 with his children attending.
John was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. After serving with the Army’s occupation forces, he graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. Immediately thereafter, John went to work for General Electric beginning as a field engineer and ending his career as a contracts administrator when he retired.
John was a long time member of Berkshire Hills Country Club and Sacred Heart Parish. An avid golfer and racing handicapper, John was well-known for his smile and storytelling. His family is very proud to remember his grace, good humor and courage in the face of numerous challenges especially after disability took him off the links and out of active circulation.
John is survived by his children, their partners and families: John and Tanya Mullin, and their two sons Eddie and Tommy, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; Michael Mullin and Jonathan Plotzker of San Francisco, California, and Maggie Weems and her children Sarah (Cairo, Egypt), Daniel (Breckenridge, Colorado), Hannah (Stockbridge, Massachusetts) and Mason (Fairfax, California), and her grandchildren Hossam and Omar (Cairo, Egypt).
FUNERAL SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 28, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 191 Elm Street, Pittsfield, with Rev. James K. Joyce officiating. Visiting hours for John will be Sunday March 27th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Devanny-Condron Funeral Home, 40 Maplewood Avenue, Pittsfield. Burial will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made, in John’s name, directly to: Elder Services of Berkshire County Inc., 66 Wendell Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Our civilization and every institution in it is permeated with lies. The lies are so thick that they pass for truths. The notion that America is a free country is one. Another is that it is a Christian country, by and large. If it were, could torture become institutionalized? Would so-called good people stand by and evilly imprison hundreds of thousands of Americans because of drugs? Is that the kind of mercy or pity or compassion that Christ promoted? Would Christians who were true to Christ be supportive of a murderous State? Of course not.

The truth emerges. It of course emerged in this land long before this in its treatment of the black race, among others. The lie was perpetrated that they were inferior as human beings rather than God’s children and brothers under the skin as all of us are. What lie and excuse now covers the mistreatment of white Americans, sending them off to die and be maimed in fruitless wars? Or groping them at every airport in the land? There is no end to the lies. This is a land of lies, and in this it is not exceptional.

And, it roots in the mistaken idea that the Gooferment is our friend and protector. We've strayed so far from the ideals of the Dead Old White Guys that their American Experiment is unrecognizable. Sure looks like we're trying to run the world while trying to run everyone's lives. And, it just gets worse. Messing in Libya, implementing Hillary care when a judge says stop, stopping drilling in the Gulf when a judge says permit, and printing 'money' like it's going out of style. Hard to say where this will all wind up. But it's going to be ugly. Where's Zorro, Robin Hood, or Superman when you need them.]
