Injury Turns into Inspiration for One High School Girl

After this girl hit her first ever home run, she tore her ACL running to first base. Just when tragedy was inevitable, something amazing happened. Watch this very touching video.

[JR: When you doing the right thing, you have no idea how far the "ripples" travel. And, even if no one is watching, you know. Compare this to the many "athletes" we see on TV. What is our "competitive" model? I hope mine is more like these young women and less like the fools who pound their own chests. I'm sure my fellow alums are even better than I hope to be someday.]

April 2: Shining a Light for Autism Awareness Day

April is Autism Awareness Month and today, April 2 is its main day. Awareness is key and that’s because experts believe that the earlier intervention begins, the better the results for children on the autistic spectrum are.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Looking for a blue light to put in my window. I can’t imagine the load you’re carrying. I can’t imagine the number of children afflicted. I can’t do much to change the world. Here’s a quick prayer to support you. Having know how sickness can impact families, I just wish you the strength and stamina to “run your race”. Good thing that women are much stronger than men. Like the old joke, “if men had to have babies, the human race would have died out eons ago”, here’s one fat old white guy injineer’s applause for your “heavy lift”.]

[JR: Suggest leaving a comment on the Yorktown Patch site to support our fellow Jasper. It cost nothing other than some time, attention, effort, and love.]

NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Boycott
April 3, 2011

*** begin quote ***

The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade has a long history of denying gay groups the ability to march. Since the Boston parade won a Supreme Court Case in 1995, gay groups have not been allowed to march openly.

The parade organizers are so homophobic that their top organizer Dennis McKeon tried to forcefully restrict someone for marching in the parade for wearing a rainbow ribbon. Even the “real” Irish are against this clearly homophobic policy with the Irish President turning down an invitation to march in the parade due to this policy.

For these well documented homophobic policies The Boycotters will be boycotting the NYC St Patrick’s Day Parade and the following companies which sponsored this years parade. If their sponsors refused to fund the parade over this issue, the parade would certainly be forced to change it’s position.

JEMAIL: Moore, Kevin (MC1980) applauds McEneney, Michael F. [MC1980]

RE: JNEWS McEneney, Michael F. [MC1980] Deputy General Counsel MasterCard

Dear CIC,

Congratulations to classmate Micheal F. McEneney on his new position. I am sure he will be a great asset to MasterCard Worldwide. Besides being an outstanding student while at Manhattan, he was also a member of the near legendary “Filthy Pigs” intramural basketball team, of which I was also a member. We never won the championship, but came close, and had a great time doing so. Seven of us reunited (unfortunatley without Mike) and won the alumni intramural championship in 1983 and were given a party by the Pinewood complete with champagne.

Kevin Moore

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) reports on several Jaspers

Dear John,

On Friday night, Cathie and I attended the Induction Ceremony for the Saint Barnabas High School Hall of Fame. One inductee was Marianne Reilly, Class of 1982 at Manhattan and a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame. Her Husband Tom Delaney,’71 was there as was Colette Geary,’82 . Marianne was recognized not only for her basketball prowess, but also for being a role model for young women, and also for her accomplishment in being appointed Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Senior Women’s Administrator for the Athletic Department at Fordham.

Another inductee with a Manhattan connection was Catherine Guldner Baker, the wife of Dick Baker,’52 and mother of Stephen Baker,’88. (Her other Manhattan connection is that she was my first date!). Catherine was recognized for her dedication to Birthright where she has been a volunteer for 37 years. She was the co-founder of Birthright in Rockland County in 1974. She currently serves as a Regional Consultant to Birthright International and as President of New York State Birthright. Catherine also co-founded the Cardinal Cooke Home in Spring Valley, a residence for pregnant women in need of assistance.

Catherine was also active as a Charter Member of the Catholic Schools Parents Federation during the 1970′s. Her husband Dick has been very supportive of her activities and has been very helpful to her in carrying out her responsibilities for Birthright. Together they raised six children and are the proud grandparents of 10.

The third inductee was Sister Mary Robert (Clare) Reilly, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. Sister graduated from Good Counsel College in 1959 and entered the Order shortly there after. As a Teacher in a number of Schools in the Westchester area she has had a lasting impact on countless number of students who still seek her out.

It was a very nice and inspiring evening for Cathie and me. Cathie and two of her sisters graduated from St. Barnabas as did our 3 Daughters. It was so nice to see that the School is still inspiring young women to lead exemplary lives.

JNEWS: Brennan, Sean [MC1997] in NYDN reports “no Ferry to MC”

Short Ferry ride at Manhattan
BY SEAN BRENNAN

*** begin quote ***

First he was coming, then he wasn’t, and now Jim Ferry has decided LIU is where his heart is.

Ferry, who several sources told The News was to be named the new Manhattan head coach by the end of this week, replacing the departed barry Rohrssen, pulled himself out of the Jaspers coaching gig Friday after talking it over with his family.

“Bob Byrnes and Manhattan were great to me,” Ferry said. “They made me a great offer the other day and I went home and talked about it with my wife and after a while we decided that it just wasn’t the right time to make a move. The Manhattan job is a great job and the people at Manhattan were terrific, but in the end I just felt loyalty to LIU, to the program and to my kids. It was a very tough decision, like I said, Manhattan is a great job, but I just decided it wasn’t the right time to make the move and so I’m staying at LIU.”

Carousel Still Spinning at Manhattan, Miami, UNLV
BY ADAM ZAGORIA ON APRIL 08, 2011, 11:02PM

*** begin quote ***

As the Coaching Carousel spins on, Manhattan, Miami and UNLV are still seeking coaches. Here’s a brief rundown on where each school is at:

MANHATTAN: The school offered the job to LIU coach Jim Ferry, but the two sides could not agree on the financials. Sources said Ferry was seeking in the neighborhood of seven years at $350,000 per, and the school is willing to pay more like $175,000, plus about $200,000 for the staff.

The administration is now split between Rhode Island College coach Bob Walsh and Louisville assistant Steve Masiello, sources said.

Walsh is by all accounts a good man and a good coach, having come from Timmy Welsh’s coaching tree at Providence. In five years prior to this one, he went 114-35 at the Division III school. He has been in the mix for the head job at Marist, Iona and St. Francis and has the backing of Associate AD Shawn Brennan, who knows him from their time together at Iona, where Walsh was an assistant. Yet because he’s coming from a D-3 program, he faces a perception problem.

Masiello, who was born in New York, grew up in Westchester and coaches under Rick Pitino, has the backing of athletic director Bob Byrnes, as well some of the top AAU guys in New York.

ENDNOTE: Are ‘domestic-partner’ benefits coming to all “Catholic” institutions?

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=9746

Marquette University will offer ‘domestic-partner’ benefits
March 25, 2011

*** begin quote ***

Marquette University, a Jesuit-run institution in Wisconsin, will offer “domestic-partner” benefits to employees beginning next year.

Marquette’s president, Robert Wild, said that offering benefits to homosexual employees was in accordance with “the Jesuit principle of cura personalis: care for the whole person. He said that he had asked himself how he could “reconcile that with denying health benefits to a couple who have legally registered their commitment to each other.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: This puts a knot in my shorts for a few reasons. (1) Is Marquette Catholic? What happened to the principle of "Hate the sin; love the sinner"? (2) Why should Marquette, or any corporation "offer" benefits? It perpetuates the economic disaster of tying benefits to employment. Shouldn't we be seeking to reverse the mistake permitted in the WW2 Wage and Price Controls that winked at the practice? How long to we keep making the same mistake? (3) Why does Marquette seek to make its people indentured servants. Locked to MU by "benefits". (4) Wouldn't it be more "honest", more in line with "social justice", more in line with Catholic teaching, to pay the laborers their true worth and let them buy their own benefits? (5) Doesn't this just infantilize people saying "we know what's best for you"? Argh!]
