Responding to the ruling, Brennan O’Donnell, president of the College, said “the analysis clearly and unfortunately demonstrates the NLRB’s lack of understanding of the identity of Manhattan College as a 21st-century Catholic college whose mission requires engagement with the broader culture of American society and higher education. Apparently the union and the government mistake our intellectual openness and welcoming spiritual environment, which we consider to be strengths of the Catholic intellectual tradition, as weaknesses. The ruling suggests that the Regional NLRB believes that the primary hallmarks of an authentic Catholic college or university are exclusionary hiring, a proselytizing atmosphere, and dogmatic inflexibility in the curriculum.” You may disagree with Manhattan College’s level of conformity with how you see it. But you fail to understand the threat to everyone that the out-of-control Gooferment represents. The “failure of Catholic Education” is rooted on the “free education” competition by the Gooferment. I’d assert that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a “product”, and education is a product, to be sold to parents when they can choose an alternative that has zero pocketbook cost. When we “allowed” Gooferment to run education, we “permitted” it to brainwash the future voters. I think, that the NLRB on MC’s “Catholic-ity”, is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Paul Richard Wolkenberg, age 66, passed away at home on Wednesday April 14, 2011. Paul was born November 11, 1944 in Long Beach, California, while his father was fighting in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Paul and his sister, Kathy, were raised by their parents, Herman and Theresa in Middletown, New York.
Always a high achiever, he excelled as a pitcher in baseball and in his school work. His high scores on the New York State regent’s exams earned him a full scholarship to Manhattan College where he earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, graduating at the top of his class and earning entry into the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. During this period he was part of the Air Force ROTC, having marched twice in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Paul was a devout Catholic.
Traveling to California for an internship with David Packard (Hewlett-Packard) in the burgeoning tech industry in Silicon Valley; his grandfather, promoting Paul’s devotion to high performance automobiles, bought him a 1964½ gold Mustang convertible. Following his undergraduate work, Paul attended graduate school at Carnegie Tech (GSIA -Carnegie-Mellon University) where he received his Master’s in Industrial Administration. While he was in Pittsburgh during his studies, he fell for a beautiful red-headed, Irish, student nurse. Patti and Paul were married on June 10, 1967 and have shared 43 amazing years together.
Paul and Pat spent the next several years in New Jersey and Northern Virginia where Paul worked for Enjay Chemical, Research Analysis Corporation, and the Federal Home Loan Bank. In the early 1970’s, they moved back to Pittsburgh with their young daughter, Beth, and soon after, their son Matt was born. Paul worked in several leadership roles at Mellon Bank, and in 1988, made the bold move to head south to Texas with his family for an opportunity that led to senior leadership positions at American Capital, Van Kampen, Morgan Stanley, and Dean Witter.
Paul embraced every aspect of his life. He was never at a loss for words, nor the energy to try all things new and exciting. This son of New York City turned into a Texas rancher, a redfish angler, and an enthusiast of the Texas country roads. He traveled to Sebring for the races with his son, attended Longhorn football games with his daughter, and spent countless hours exploring the world with his wife, Pat. He was an active board member with Sheltering Arms and Stand Up for Kids.
Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughter Beth and her husband, Alex Delledera, son Matthew and his wife, Brandy, most dear grand-daughter, Isabelle, and grandson on-the-way, his sister, Kathy Harmeling and her sons, DJ and Paul and their families. He is preceded in death by his father and his mother.
The true joy in Paul’s life was his family. The happiness he felt when he was with his extended family, the Wolkenberg’s, Horgan’s, Brisky’s, Delledera’s, and Schadt’s was immeasurable. His life was a gift to all who knew him.
A visitation will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 from 6:00p.m. until 9:00p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 10:30a.m. at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community Church, 1530 Norwalk Drive Katy, Texas 77450.

John graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1943. He was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday April, 20, 2011 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. Reception will follow the service at the Church. Interment will be private. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue Stamford, CT 06902 is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Stephen M. Porcelli, to the Leukemia Society of America, Inc., 372 Danbury Road, Suite 22, Wilton, CT 06897.

Why are you running? “When we moved into town, I ran for the board looking for something worthwhile to volunteer for. This is really a great calling for service to the community and our kids. I really don’t know a better way to give back than serving on the school board. I’ve been in business for a long time and have been the board’s finance chair for the last three years. Since I’ve been a member, we have had three great budgets we’ve put together for the town with minimal tax increases.”
What do you think is the most important issue facing the district today? “Probably all the regulations coming from the state. Our tax base is limited, so all the reforms that are coming down related to funding are hard. We’re also in the middle of our teacher negotiations. It is very important that we complete that. Lastly, improving educational achievement for the kids. We are doing good with the math area, now we’re working to improve the language arts.”

Dear Donor Partners of Addis Hope,As you can see this is a form letter done for the most part alphabetically, but you are in good company because, except for a few ringers, everyone listed is a donor partner of Addis Hope. Because I wanted to wish you and yours a Happy Easter on time, there is no way I could do so individually. As you have done so often in the past, I hope you will pardon this lack of personalization.
Recently, Addis Ababa has seen extraordinary infrastructure improvement in the construction of new roads and buildings, particularly condominiums. To construct these condominiums many of the crumbling houses in which our families live have been torn down. Some have managed to find temporary shelter with relatives while many others, as much as fifty percent, are now living in appalling conditions on the streets under plastic sheeting. Many of the tuition charging small schools in the area have closed because the families have been forced to leave but our displaced families now travel longer distances to keep their children in Addis Hope.
When the local authorities investigated this particular center they found a building in great disrepair, actually beyond decrepit, because it was all the rent we could afford. It would have suffered a similar fate as the others except that the students’ families staged their own little revolution. I mention this to show that the Addis Hope program is a lifeline for our children and their families, something the local authorities realized when they questioned the families and also saw the excellent school scholastic results. The center remains, This is a temporary relief to my colleague Ruth Girmay, myself and, of course, the extremely poor families.
The cost of running the Addis Hope program has now increased by 53% and when some long standing donor partners can no longer assist at the same funding level, I am extremely worried about the future of this much needed program. Your desperately needed financial support obviously continues to be our vital life line. The 150 Ethiopian dollars – the equivalent today of USA $9.00 we have been asking for the last ten years of the program to sponsor a child for a year makes it very difficult to keep the program operational in light of the huge increase in the cost of living.
As many of you have responded very generously to our Christmas appeal, I’m now asking if it would be possible for even more of you to do the same this Easter season by going to our web site (http://www.addis-hope.com/) to locate any additional “disposable income” for the program.
For the children of Addis Hope the program is intended to grow their minds to feed their future in a country where malnourishment of both the intellect and body is very evident.

Francis William Wessbecher died April 5 at St. Lucie Medical Center in Florida. He was 84.
Born on Dec. 30, 1926, in the Bronx, N.Y., he lived in Valley Stream, N.Y., before moving to Parsippany in 1969. He wintered in Florida.
Wessbecher was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a graduate of Manhattan College and New York University. He was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Society. Wessbecher worked on the lunar module for the moon space program. Later, he worked on the missile defense gyro system. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
He was a former past grand knight and longtime financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus Parsippany Council 3680.
Wessbecher is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen; his seven children, Robert, Rose Ellen, Francis, Mary Ann, Dorothy, Kathryn and Grace; and his 13 grandchildren, Glenna, Alanna, and Fiona, Maura, Bobby, and Aileen, Frank and Laura, Boone and Skye, and Charles, Becky and Marie.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Par-Troy Funeral Home. Liturgy was offered at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church in Parsippany.

James Abulencia (photo) assistant professor of chemical engineering at Manhattan College, is testing a sustainable technology to bring clean water to rural communities in his native Philippines.
Last week, with the help of a research team from De La Salle University in Manila and Shannon O’Brien, a chemical engineering graduate student at Manhattan College, Abulencia presented his findings at the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington.
Abulencia and his team received a year of funding last August from the EPA to begin designing the biodegradable water purification solution for the town of Nagcarian, Philippines.”

First, “manhattan college” is a little confusing. There are several institutions that are sometimes mis-identified as “manhattan college”. I’m going to assume that you mean “my” Manhattan College (i.e., manhattan.edu), the one in the Bronx. (Yeah, it’s funny. It moved to the country back in the 1800′s. But it’s history and it just is.)
Should you go there? Sure. (That’s my opinion.) US News and World Reports, Bloomberg, and others have all rated it high on ROI. That should be important because you’re going to spend a lot of time, money, and effort to get an education. “It’s not the depth of the well that determines how much water you’ll carry away; it’s the size of the bucket you bring.” You have to make sure that you take away something that will serve you for your whole life. I know I did. You have to grill the Admissions folk about “why MC is good for you”. Call William J. Bisset, Jr. and have him direct you to the right people.
And, when you want to learn about your future fellow alums, drop over to my website. It’s free. And, I have a lot of stories about my fellow alums and what they have done. That’s important because they are your potential networking resources. You can tap their expertise, knowledge, and that of their contacts. That’s job leads, and important information.

Philly FF’s Burned: UPDATE (The Secret List)
Hey, As you know, several Philadelphia Firefighters were caught in a flashover last night. The fire, with victims trapped and rescues made, resulted in a civilian fatality as well. The fire was …a 2 story end of row basement fire with people trapped on 2nd floor. PFD members rescued 1 adult male from 2nd floor. While attempting to rescue a 2nd adult male (70 retired and wheel chair bound police officer), the fire flashed trapping the Firefighters. Firefighter Seeger came out of a 2nd floor window. Lieutenant Vozzeli and Firefighter Lardon were able to escape thru the stairs. Firefighters did find working smoke detectors inside the home. CONDITIONS OF THE FIREFIGHTERS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Lt Ray Vozzeli from L15C working L2B 27 yrs on the job Stable now released. Rather than stand up for the abused, Donohue has decided his real job is to prevent the Church from suffering any further embarrassment. But he’s too late. When the Church decided, time and time again, to cover up what happened they lost the moral authority and the right to accuse anyone of anything, frankly.

This issue isn’t going away. Like an undrained abscess, it is going to continue to fester until sterilized.
The true victims, in a specific sense, here are the abused children. In a more general sense, it’s the entire human community. For whom, the Church could have been a voice of humanity for those in need of her protection.
Maybe I’m too much of a movie buff, but it was Holy Mother Church, not the Three musketeers or Zorro, that protected the peasants from the excesses of the various French Kings, Cardinals, or Royal Governors.
Right now, we could use strong moral authority speaking out on the “Culture of Death” (i.e., abortion, sex selection, capital punishment, starvation, jihad, and the oppression of women in the name of religion). Where we could use the Church’s strong voice in over-taxation (i.e., the Bible says tithe; the state takes it all — virtually). And, the Gooferment’s incursion into “charity” which is the domain of human caring (i.e., the Gooferment wants to be the “Queen Bee” enslaving us from cradle to grave).
But, the pedophile priests, the homosexual agenda within the Church, has removed or diminished it’s voice. And the Gooferment likes that just fine. A weakened Church can’t oppose it. A Church distracted by lawsuits and bankruptcy, can’t discipline CINO politicians, it’s own priests and religious, or call its wayward flock back from “Secular Progressivism”.
And, the country, the World, is worse off for it.
Until the Church administers the 20th Century version of the “Spanish Inquisition”, throws open all the files, and airs out its “dirty laundry”, it will continue to be a “wounded combatant” in the arena of ideas.
To all our detriment.
