POSITRACTION: What’s your passion?

http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Living-the-professional-Irish-dancing-dream-120537039.html

Living the professional Irish dancing dream

*** begin quote ***

Most dancers might dream of earning a living from their passion, but for one lucky girl it’s already a day job.

Meet Kellyanne Farrell from Yonkers, a 24-year-old who is a full-time member of the renowned dance show ‘The Magic of Ireland.’ While her competitors juggle their training with college studies or full-time jobs, Kellyanne has spent the last three months touring with the show all over the USA and Canada.

Kellyanne told the Irish Voice: “I was a school teacher but I left the job to join the show. I figure I can be a school teacher when I’m 80, but I can only dance for a few years!”

A change of scenery beckoned this week when she returned to the competitive stage to take part in the Ladies Over 21 category at the World Irish Dancing Championships. However, her trip to Ireland wasn’t without immense drama as Kellyanne had to travel without the new costume she had ordered for the event.

*** and ***

A total of 242 dancers took part in today’s competition for Ladies Over 21. Yet the participation of Brandi Braun from Colorado was truly remarkable given that she only started dancing at the age of 14. The 24-year-old from Denver trains with the Wick school of dance, and admitted: ”I was a late starter!”

Brandi spent her first 14 years working on similarly taxing pursuits, explaining: “I was a first degree black belt at Taekwondo.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: There's something almost viral that comes through this story. How does that old self-help canard go? "Find your passion and you'll never work a day in your life." These "Ladies Over 21" can teach us all something about "going for the gusto". Wonder if there's a "fat old white guy injineer over 65" competition? For beer drinking and being a "grump". I'm sure I could place in the money. But what are my fellow alums doing to follow their passion?]

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) doesn’t approve assassinations

http://www.worldsstrangest.com/mental-floss/can-boat-captains-really-marry-people/

Dear Jasper John,

Just for your and Jerry Breen’s information it is not a myth that sea captains can marry people; it depends on the country and varies widely around the world. Bermuda now makes available weddings conducted by sea captains aboard ship, for example.

I do not approve assassinations in any case; that is a power I would deny any and all governments.

But governments are required to sustain our rights and these rights include the right to a decent living. Greed is one of the deadly sins, not a building block for a decent society. One need not practice love but justice is required.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

[JR: (1) Re; sea captains ... I'm sure Jerry will be "edified" by this link. I never cared one way or another about who marries or who married whom. Like Ron Paul said the other night, marriage SHOULD BE a private matter with no Gooferment involvement. (2) Re: You're not approving of assassinations ... I am sure that you've put the "Impeach BHO44" on your car, like I have. What else can you call "BHO44 got OBL"? (3) Gooferments are NOT required for "rights". According to the Dead Old White Guys and the "Classical Liberals" that protection is the ONLY reason to have them. There is NO right to "a decent living". That's a positive right and, as I "learnt a MC in eckynomics klass", that even a fat old white guy injineer could understand, that means some one has to pay for that right. So who are you enslaving today? (4) Not recognizing greed is like not recognizing gravity. But, it can be used to induce humans to cooperate with each other peacefully. Greed IS good. And efficient. Do you think we get food because farmers love to sweat their butts off? Remember the Pilgrims starved until they tried Capitalism. Greed doesn't get bad until Gooferment Force gets involved. (5) I'll pass on your Gooferment "justice". They just don't seem to get it right. Project Innocence, ¼ of the federal prison population is for "drug offenses", Gitmo, Bernard "Nut House" -- the liberty Dollar "counterfeiter", and on and on. If they don't kill you, if it suits the politicians and bureaucrats. Nah, you keep your Gooferment. Just leave me and everyone in peace. (6) ATDA. Donna Nobis Pacem.]

Why is Manhattan College in the Bronx?
Historian Pat McNamara takes a fascinating and amusing look at the Christian Brothers and their founding of a “veritable college of cardinals.”
By Pat McNamara, May 09, 2011

*** begin quote ***

A religious Brother’s vocation is unique. Free of the priest’s obligation to celebrate the Sacraments, his calling is exclusively apostolic. Within this context, the Brothers of the Christian Schools, started by St. John Baptist De La Salle in 1600′s France, have made a distinctive contribution. The first Brothers founded exclusively for teaching, they contributed greatly toward the development of education as profession. Much of what we take for granted today was started by them.

*** and ***

The site was purchased with help from Hughes. On May 5, 1853, the Academy of the Holy Infancy opened at 131st Street and Grand Boulevard (now Broadway) with twenty-five students. One Brother commented: “everything was in an appropriate state of unreadiness.” For the next seventy years, nearby Annunciation Church doubled as the college chapel.

*** and ***

But property had been purchased for a new campus near Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and ground was broken in 1921. On May 15, 1924, the new campus was dedicated by New York’s Archbishop, Patrick Hayes, Class of 1888. He and George Mundelein, Class of 1889, had just been named Cardinals, on the same day. Manhattan was now known as a “veritable college of cardinals.”

And that’s why Manhattan College is in the Bronx!

Success

“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.” Dr. George Sheehan

*** begin quote ***

Dr. George Sheehan was a powerful advocate for running from its boom in the late 1970′s until his death in 1993. He was a regular contributor to Runner’s World magazine and wrote a weekly column in the Red Bank Register, our local paper in the 80′s. He became famous for breaking through age barriers, including running the first sub-5 minute mile by a person over 50. He published several books and wrote essays that he classified as either “right brain” (those about philosophy and his experiences), or “left brain” (practical advice). At age 60, he ran the Marine Corps Marathon with a time of 3:01.

The local 365

*** begin quote ***

Work hard, live simply, and have a great respect for the Earth.

I have decided today to make a change. This change is going to be drastic. No more mass-produced anything. Yes, that means no new clothing, no mass-produced or name brands. This is going to be applied to my entire life.

Thinking about clothing, I have decided that this means that I will not buy any new clothing. All second hand for me. I want to prove that it is possible to take yourself out of the capitalistic fashion world and still feel confident about how you look. This does not mean that things are necessarily going to be cheaper, but it will mean that I will not be contributing to the success of ‘new fall lines’.

For food, I will try my darnedest to eat locally. As a student at Manhattan College, and obligated to eat in the cafeterias until summer, this may have to wait until May 18th to take effect.

Everything else will be locally made, as long as it is something that it is literally irreplaceable, such as medication.

This is the blog of my story, my try to take myself out of this system that I am starting to find repulsive.

[JR: Well, hopefully before you completely condemn "capitalism", you might want to consider that life was -- how does that phrase -- "hard, brutish, and short". Perhaps it might be better if we lived a subsistence life style. But better for whom? "Eckynomics" teaches us that the scarcity is a fact of life. Perhaps, instead of "opting out", it might be better to "opt in". Figure out how to both transcend societies current limits and maximizing human potentials. As a fat old white guy injineer, all I can think of when you say "second hand clothing" is "used undies". Will you really buy and wear a "used bathing suit". Yuck. But then, I'm a barbarian from down the hill who thinks "beer and pizza" is fine dining and all you need in life is clean undies.]

Catholic leaders are using this as a teachable moment for Boehner. This week a delegation of Catholic University faculty are delivering to Boehner’s office a letter signed by more than 70 Catholic scholars, clergy and leaders – including 30 Catholic University faculty – about how the Republican budget plan recently passed by the House violates Catholic doctrine about treatment of the most vulnerable members of society. They’re also giving the Speaker a helpful resource to inform his policy positions – a copy of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, a Vatican publication that highlights centuries of Church teaching on social justice issues.

[JR: Sigh. Fortunately, this is NOT a Catholic Theocracy. And, I hope it never is. Even those who are Catholics, are NOT obligated to have their wealth stolen by the Gooferment to support what a bunch of “Catholic leaders” think is his duty to force upon others. It’s hard to imagine a more un-Christian application. Catholics have a self-imposed obligation to be charitable; citizens have NO such obligation. American’s are a very charitable people by their very nature. But let’s not confuse “charity” and “obligation”. Socialism, Marxism, and Communism have all been tried and failed. Unfortunately, it appears that “Catholic leaders” would like to try again. I’ve seen Gooferment welfare and how it entraps and demeans. Private charity is infinitely more effective and efficient. It’s interesting how the “Catholic leaders” are often AWOL on the Gooferment anti-life activities. But that doesn’t match their political agenda. ATDA!]

Andrew Paretti Jr. is an 86-year-old World War II veteran, and he doesn’t think he’s a hero. Nor did he want to go on an Honor Flight when his friend, John Young, a retired Navy captain he met in the Navy League, first suggested it.

“Those are for the heroes,” he said. Still, Reid persisted for three years, and finally accompanied Paretti as a guardian on a Stars and Stripes Honor Flight two weeks ago to see the National World War II memorial.

Paretti was only 20 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was in Manhattan College in New York City, his hometown, and could have finished his degree in another semester if he chose. COLONIE — A scooter never slowed him down.

Brother Aloysius Myers, an educator at the Christian Brothers Academy for 52 years, died Thursday at 80. “Brother Al” was more than a teacher, principal and guidance counselor; he was the living embodiment of the school.

Brother Al parked his scooter at the entrance to the school every morning to give high-fives and hugs to the students entering. He parked it on the basketball court, at the end of the bench, and popped Jolly Ranchers into his mouth as he watched the court. He was also there to give varsity basketball coach David Domel a little poke every time he heard a curse word.

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) “Poor Adolf”

John: Here’s my latest cartoon. I thought a little comparison between Bin Laden and Hitler might be illuminating. {Privacy Invoked} Thanks again, Jerry Breen

[JR: Well, as usual, you are most entertaining, but like guys from up the hill, you ignore certain facts. (1) We ain't them bad old Ruskies, son, (2) WW2 was the LAST war Congress bothered to declare. (3) What happens when old BHO44 takes a particular dislike to a certain impertinent cartoonist and fat old white guy injineer with desire to see real birth certificates? (4) We have so much wrong with our country we need to go back to basic principles. Shooting unarmed sick old men in their undies still seems wrong to me. (5) And donning my tin foil hat, why did we try Saddam and so many others and yet not do the same to old OBL? Could he have secrets about the CIA that no one wanted coming to light? Did BHO44 need to distract "We, The Sheeple" from low unemployment, zero inflation, and inexpensive gas? (6) Maybe another cartoon is in order. LOL!]

Breaking News: New Twists and Turns in Rocky Election Road
By Chuck Daly Editor-in-Chief

*** begin quote ***

In another shocking development in the ongoing student government election controversy, new information has come to light revealing that Joseph Driscoll was ineligible to run for president in the first place.

Both the Manhattan College Student Government Constitution and the Student Handbook say, “elected and appointed representatives of Student Government must have and maintain a minimum overall Grade Point Average of 2.3, while being full-time, undergraduate and matriculating students.”

Driscoll has confirmed to The Quadrangle that he has not met these requirements.

ENDNOTE: Why Gooferment hates Catholic Education

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/nj-students-step-forward-to-join-catholic-church

NJ students step forward to join Catholic Church
By Charles W. Nutt

*** begin quote ***

Camden, N.J., Apr 23, 2011 / 01:14 pm (CNA).- St. Mary Magdalen Regional School in Millville, N.J. will finish this academic year with more than a dozen additional Catholic students – but not because of a surge in enrollment.

The increase is due to 13 of the school’s 29 non-Catholic students joining the Catholic Church.

“It is very unusual,” said Sister Rosa Maria Ojeda, the principal. “Usually we have two or three, or at most four.”

*** end quote ***

Here’s the reason that “We, The People” have to “die” fighting on the “Gooferment Skrules” “hill”.

Gooferment Skrules propagandize “the young minds full of mush” to believe that the Gooferment actually exists. We all know it’s just a puppet show where the elite control the gang.

Gooferment must KILL “the Church”, any church, as an alternative for the people to go to seek protection from the “King’s” tyranny.

If religious schools are allowed to exist they will undermine the control of the Gooferment and the “Secular Progressives”.

We should have fought this battle years ago. Now we have no choice. We’re in a hopeless situation imho but we have to go down “guns a blazing”.

“…if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” -Churchill, The Second World War, vol. 1, The Gathering Storm (London: Cassell, 1948, 272, on the British guarantee to Poland in Spring 1939.

We well may be at that moment or a little past it.
