For ASU’s One-Legged Wrestler Anthony Robles, It’s Been A Devil Of A Career
By Jose Romero – Field Reporter

The native of Mesa, who was born without a right leg, is competing in the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Mar 19, 2011 – He’s beaten the odds time after time, so a few more victories to close out a stellar career don’t seem out of the question for Sun Devil senior Anthony Robles.

[JR: Amazing. I complain of things that "prevent" me from doing "stuff". How lame is that? Then, I read about truly heroic individuals, who overcome fantastic hurdles. When it would be real easy to say "can't, won't, or they'll think I'm nuts". I guess the essence of this is "yet another" demonstration by the Universe that all our limitations are in our own mind. It's not in the human hardware; it's the human "wetware" that needs a software update. Like old willy shakespeare said: "not the stars". Amazing stuff! I'm sure my fellow alums don't have such "limiting beliefs", but maybe this fellow might inspire anyone.]

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973] sympathizes Gooferment “Peace”

Hi John! :) Hope you’re surviving all your Easter chocolate! :>

I have to admit that, particularly as the first Peace Studies graduate, I sympathize with your feelings when you say, “Shooting unarmed sick old men in their undies still seems wrong to me.” However, I also sympathize with the decision to do so.

Why? For several reasons:

1) While it’s always possible to be wrong, I believe there exists vanishingly little doubt that Osama was guilty of murdering a good many people. If the death penalty is acceptable for murder he would certainly have been a prime candidate despite his “political,” “religious” or even “idealistic” motivations.

2) If he had NOT been quickly and thoroughly disabled there was certainly a good chance that he would have had something set up to wipe his computers etc with that wiping resulting in our not being able to stop possibly horrendous acts of mass destruction and loss of life in the future.

3) Given his history and fanaticism it was also quite likely that he would have had a “kill switch” set up that would have allowed him to push a button and blow his entire compound sky-high in the event of an action such as occurred. That would have killed all the innocents in there as well as our own troops. I do not believe that asking the troops to risk their lives on a bet that he did NOT have such an arrangement would have been fair.

A somewhat “pragmatic” view for an old Peace Studies major and activist, but if at any point a person or a nation feels the need to avoid Ghandian nonviolence they need to not only try to find sufficient justification for such abandonment but also meet an obligation to try to ensure that it results in as little collateral suffering and loss of life as possible. I think the way it was handled met those conditions pretty well.

Michael J. McFadden

@Michael73

Amazing how little children won’t share chocolate bunnies with anyone.

(1) As a pro-lifer, I don’t ever accept the “death penalty”. Seems “cruel and unusual”. As well as “irreversible”. And, while OBL MAY have been the worst human to walk the earth, I’m a fat old white guy injineer who kinda likes objective “evidence”. I have no idea WHAT if anything he was “guilty” of. I know what everyone “says”, but that ain’t “evidence”. You might wish to consider that politicians and bureaucrats say a lot of stuff to move the mob, to scare the mob, or to “lead” the mob. (Sounds like a quiz show and lifelines.) Didn’t he make a public statement way back when saying he didn’t have anything to do with 9-11?

(2) As Perry Mason would say: “Assumes facts not in evidence”. Unless he had super powers of static electricity, that doesn’t seem plausible. And, “we” had him. Why kill him before you spent a few years squeezing intelligence out of him.

(3) Again assumes, I haven’t heard any such reports. And, given the current occupants desire to preen for the cameras, I’m sure that capability would have been mentioned. And, as far as “asking troops”, why are “we” still in 170 countries around the world? I think we “ask” them to be in danger way to much.

(4) I think that the old “peace activists”, not you of course, but those anti-Viet Name War activists, have been shown to be quite war-like when the right brand of socialist is in the White House. Now I never studied “peace”, but I don’t remember my reading of Gandhi as every having a lot of nuances. It was just “non-violent non-cooperation”. Your admirable concern for “collateral suffering” seems to overlook the toll “WE” are inflicting on a daily basis with “our” Gooferment.

(5) I still maintain that “BHO44 getting OBL” was an immoral, ineffective, and inefficient “distraction”. I won’t repeat myself. But what happens when some President decides that an “old Peace studies major and activist” is a national threat? Sorry, but your Gooferment scares me. First they came for OBL and no one spoke for him because I was one of him. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak for me. Yeah, fat old white guy injineers know Pastor Martin Niemöller.

JEMAIL: Fagan, Gene (MC1950) confirms a nickname

RE: Manhattan – The College of Cardinals

John,

In my day we recognized three cardinals of that era when we referred to Manhattan as the College of Cardinals. There was Hays of New York, Mundelein of Chicago and a third who’s name and See I forget. It may have been the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Gene Fagan – 1950

[JR: I remember hearing that back at the Prep, but never in College. Seems like MC hasn't produced any lately. Hence the nickname is as historical as the Seventh Inning Stretch. Interesting. Sad. But, imho, not unexpected. When "Catholics" lost the battle for the education of their children, the "war" was lost. Digging in a little deeper, when we lost the battle for the hearts and minds of young Catholic women, the "war" was really over. (Have you heard them talk? Longshoremen and sailors would blush!) The pedophilia was corrosive. And, the Gooferment, politicians, and bureaucrats just stepped aside and let the "religion" self-destruct for their benefit. Looks irreversible fmpov. Sigh!]

ESSAY
Forty Years After a Dream Mile, a Harsh Reality for Track
By TOM CONNELLY
Published: May 15, 2011

*** begin quote ***

The news that the Millrose Games are leaving Madison Square Garden after 97 years to relocate uptown to the 168th Street armory reminds us of how indifferent we are to track and field. And yet, in a coincidence of timing, we remember, too, that we were not always this way. Friday’s announcement came almost exactly 40 years after an event that placed the sport, however briefly, front and center in the consciousness of the American public.

On May 16, 1971, Marty Liquori and Jim Ryun went head to head at Franklin Field in Philadelphia in what was billed as the Dream Mile. Maybe it did not generate the overheated water-cooler conversation that anticipated Ali-Frazier two months earlier, but in an era of unusually outsize sports personalities, when malevolence of thought and deed were imputed on the slimmest evidence, the Dream Mile fueled a rousing simmer. Like Ali-Frazier, Liquori-Ryun lived up to its hype.

*** and ***

In the race itself, neither runner initially played to type. Liquori allowed Joe Savage, a future relay world-record holder but then a precocious Manhattan College freshman, to set a lackluster early pace, perhaps as a gesture to Fred Dwyer, Savage’s coach and a former world-class miler who had been Liquori’s mentor at Essex Catholic in Newark. At 700 yards, an uncharacteristically impatient Ryun, who could lurk breathtakingly deep in the pack, and sometimes out of the pack, before reeling in runners like so many singlets on a clothesline, glided past Liquori and toward the front.

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) thinks paywall is just a tollbooth

MNEWS: MC and the union issue

Dear fJohn,

In your haste to label Commonweal as part of the dread “Secular Progressive” media, I think you are missing a point for you beloved free market. You seem to imply that by putting some of their content behind a paywall, that Commonweal hasn’t “learned how to deal with the inet.” Does this mean that the only way for them to properly deal with the inet is to give away all of their content for free to all comers? I would think that you would understand that their business model might include asking people to pay for content for which Commonweal surely had to pay their writers, editors, internet providers etc. Isn’t this the way free markets work?

Dear Mike:

Two different things. (1) Almost ALL the media is either “Secular Progressive” or enthralled with that pov. (2) A “paywall” is evidence of “old meme” thinking.

Transition from selling a magazine is more than just going to sell a file of electrons. It’s the new media in more ways than one. So let’s look at it, why put out a teaser rather than content? It doesn’t even get website visitors that translates to ad dollars. All that it does is to solidify the “old” image. The inet, as well as all “sales” and marketing, is about a conversation. This tease isn’t about conversation.

No, “free” is not the only business model. But, it is the most powerful way to attract eyeballs. There’s “freemimum” as well as “SaaS”, the service model, the free with paid support, tied in products, tied in services, and platform based. Those are just the ones that I pay money for.

We have no “free markets”, except for the local flea market, the underground economy, and the illicit “trades”. Everything is distorted by Gooferment intervention. Free markets are demonstrated by willing buyers and sellers. Preventing force and fraud is the proper role of government.

The cited “tease” is a waste. With the paywall, they stop others from reading that story, commenting on it, referring others, and creating a buzz. They lost an opportunity to get subscribers by failing to create “conversation” that would lead to “conversions”.

JEMAIL: Mangone, Mark (MC1977) disagrees on “greed”

Hello John,

Greed is Evil.

When one person robs another, that is greed. When one person murders another to rob them, that is greed. When a company cheats their customers or employees, that is greed.

Greed is sinful and evil.

I and many others can earn a living without being obsessed with needing more and more money, even after I have 3 square meals a day, and a nice house and car. Being obsessed with having billions to the point where you must out compete or cheat others to get it is greed.

There is a distinction between earning a living and being greedy. One is good and the other is evil.

Regards,
Mark A. Mangone
Senior Environmental Engineer
Buckman International

[JR: "Greed", as in  wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony, is "bad". (Eye of the needle and all that.) But, how else do we get a farmer to work his butt off sweating to grow us food? A plumber to unstop my toilet. Etc, etc, etc. I'd say that with great wealth comes great responsibility. And, we know money can't buy happiness. (Trading it all for another day of life.) But, the division of labor that permits capitalism that permits investment in the "fishing nets" that in turn gives us all a better standard of living. That ALL depends upon "cooperation". So, if not some form of "greed", then what? What will motivate people? Money and the benefits of it. It's funny that you do see the taxes of Gooferment or the flaws of its "corporations" of not "robbing" society collectively of more wealth than any one robber could do in a lifetime. Does the farmer farm because of a diktat? Didn't work for the Soviets in the Ukraine. Or because he's motivated for the things that money can buy?]

JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) makes more points

On 5/16/2011 6:19 PM, Don & Diane wrote:

Dear Jasper John,

I am happy to see that you agree that marriage is between two human beings and should be regarded by the government as such. However marriage is also a legal contract having effects on property rights and the treatment of children resulting from the marriage, whether by birth or adoption- the state has to be involved.

Among the worst states for enforcement of anti-marijuana laws are Oklahoma (10 years for two ounces), Texas (77,000 arrests per annum), Louisiana( 20 years after 3 arrests), Arizona (18 months and 150K fine for first offense), and Florida (5 years for 20 grams). All these states, including Ron Paul’s home Texas are governed by Tea Party libertarians who enforce these laws with a vengeance, again proving my point  that libertarians are more interested in a free ride than they are in freedom. They vote themselves lower taxes at the expense of poor people and then toss the poor into jail for trying to survive by using or selling drugs. Their pals in the prison industrial complex also make out like bandits.

If you really think that people were better off with the small governments of the 18th and nineteenth centuries I suggest you read “On the Grid” by Scott Huler. He describes how things were fine then if you believe that the best waste management systems involve letting pigs run loose through the streets. Hogs even ate dead horses left to rot in street. (A common practice). He was talking about cities, not rural areas.

My first reaction to your claim that capitalism saved the Pilgrims was that capitalism was non-existent at the time; what we call capitalism did not come into being until much later. This is discussed on a Snopes evaluation of Limbaugh’s claim about the Pilgrims

{Extraneous Deleted; google snopes and pilgrims to read their opinions. They assert a copyright, and have layers on their pages. The Jasper Jottings legal staff always reminds me about “fair use”.}

Greed was condemned by Jesus Christ time and time again and is never good for anything. The greedy consume with abandon while others starve!! What if were you starving and a man went by and sneered at you and gave you nothing? Would you approve? of greed then?

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins

(1) What I think is that Gooferment should have NO role in “marriage”, the definition there of, or the “rules”! As far as the “legalities”, we see just how well those work. If it wasn’t a human tragedy, we could point out how well the “child welfare system” works. I’m sure that reasonable people can work out much better arrangements if Gooferment “force” (i.e., reign of terror) was reserved for preventing the use of force or fraud upon “We, The People”.

(2) As far as I know, “Tea Party Libertarians”, or any other form of “libertarian”, are not in control of any state. Although you could make an argument that Somalia under the tribal war loads is a form of “libertarianism”. By you’re own admissions, us little L libertarians don’t control anything. So how can we be part of any “complex”?

(3) I believe that folks were a lot “free-er”. Now, those cities, you cite with the dead horses, probably were controlled by a Gooferment. No? My assertions are that Gooferment is out of control. Have you seen some of the inner cities lately? Streets look pretty bad. But, no politicians and bureaucrats live there.

(4) I believe that it wasn’t until the Pilgrims “discovered” private property that they stopped starving. I’ll defer to the historians. But I have read the Guv’s journal. The english was like reading Shakespeare. Snopes lost all credibility to me when they became political.

(5) Greed makes the world go round. The desire for a better life is a human emotion. It is “greed” that makes humans cooperate. The greedy “consumption” often pioneers general improvement. Like cars, air conditioning, or even “sanitation”, all were first obtained by the “rich”. And, then “trickled down” to everyone. Most “rich” people are very charitable. And, don’t forget that the Gooferment steals an incalculable percentage of everyone’s wealth and yet still Americans support charities. If I was starving, my plight should be addressed by my friends and family. I hope my fellow Jaspers would even feed me. (But, some may say it’s time for a diet.) But, just as if I pulled out a gun on that guy who passed me by, it’s the same if I invoke the Gooferment to rob him for my benefit.

As far as WWJD, I think we were given free will. Surrendering to Caesar, doesn’t absolve us of moral duties. Charity is best, as measured by effectiveness and efficiency, done by individuals; NOT Gooferment.

ATDA,
fjohn68

NBA Playoffs: Why the Playoff Field Should Be Cut Down to 12 Teams
By Jesse Kramer (Correspondent) on April 25, 2011

*** begin quote ***

This year, my liking for the NBA has grown much more. Most likely, it is because my hometown team, the New York Knicks, have become something worthy of positive recognition, or it could just be that I needed to watch some professionals play the game right after spending a few months watching the Manhattan College Jaspers go 6-25.

[JR: So young. Spouse with children. On a personal note, I too have just lost a spouse. I can only imagine what the children, husband, and family are going through. I know that platitudes, mumbled condolences, and well-meaning phrases are little comfort. Wish I had the “silver bullet” to offer, I don’t. I’m told that “time heals all wounds”, but at the 82 day mark, the loss is as it was yesterday. I recently heard a C&W song that seemed to sum it up: “the living goes on after the thrill is gone”. My prayers and good thoughts are with them. I have nothing to offer. But, it stunning to be “called home” so very young. Guess the message is Carpe Diem and “you really don’t know the day”. Basketball: Livingston Named New Coach For Wilson Boys’

*** begin quote ***

The Moore League’s second-oldest school has made yet another move to fill a coaching hole left by the hundreds of LBUSD layoffs handed down last week.

*** and ***

And now we’ve learned that head boys’ basketball coach, Matt Michelson, will be replaced by his former assistant, Niles Livingston, who takes over after three years as an assistant.

Livingston prepped in New York, where he was rated one of the top 50 players coming out of HS as a senior. He played at Manhattan College, then professionally with the Knicks’ farm team for a season, and for several years overseas in Europe and South America.

In addition to his work with Wilson the last three years, he’s been active in the club/AAU world.

Summary:

I have been entrepreneurial since the age of ten. I would do all types of jobs for our neighbors to make money during each of the seasons in Connecticut. This would include cutting grass, raking leaves, and shoveling snow out of driveways……..by hand. The summer before I entered college, I had an ice cream truck where I would spend every day driving to office parks, ball fields and the beaches to satisfy the thirst and sweet tooth of folks during the hot and humid summers on Long Island Sound. Being as competitive as I am led me to be disappointed in finishing second out of forty-five trucks in sales for the season.

Competition. I am driven to finish as the best and I usually do, when I am am called on to help create the path to success and have the opportunity to manage what matters.

Activator. I can take ideas and put them into action for results. Energizing actions is an area of mastery for me.

Futuristic. I have the ability to see where the goals will take me and my team. Coaching and guiding others to reach their potential is one of my skills that appearred early in my career..

Responsibility. My motto is “Do it once and do it right”. I always do what is best for my client, even if it means that we don’t do business together.

Self-Assurance. My confidence from many years of great success has allowed me to set ambitious goals and to meet or exceed them. I am known for getting things done.

These skills, coupled with my business acumen have guided me through my whole life. This is woven into the fabric of who I am.

May 21, 2011 update: Staten Island prophet of doom says he expects to be in heaven for tomorrow’s ‘end of the world’
Published: Friday, May 20, 2011, 8:04 AM Updated: Friday, May 20, 2011, 8:05 AM
By Maura Grunlund

*** begin quote ***

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Staten Islander who predicts that the world as we know it will end tomorrow at 5:59 p.m. has high hopes for his own salvation.

“I believe that I will be raptured [instantly transported to heaven]; I hope so, I don’t want to be here for the earthquake,” Robert Fitzpatrick told the Advance yesterday.

*** and ***

Fitzpatrick allows that his only encounter with the discipline of theology was during his time at Manhattan College in the Bronx, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering. The Bronx native, who moved with his family to Staten Island in 1963, stopped practicing his Catholic faith years ago, when he “realized how far away from the Bible the Roman Catholic Church got.”

He said he discovered Family Radio in about 2004 and began studying the Bible intensely following his retirement in 2006, after 26 years with the MTA. He spent about three years doing research for his book and in the process read over 1,000 pages’ worth of Camping’s writings. “The Doomsday Code” is his distillation of Camping’s recent books.

What was your first job as an adult? My first job as an adult was as a corporate accountant.

“For every charter school recently opened in Harlem, two Catholic schools have had to close because of financial trouble,” writes Stern. “The same holds for New York City as a whole.
