Harlin Still Going Strong
Pearl River resident Tony Harlin, a Nanuet HIgh School graduate, continues to excel in the shot put even at age 53.
By Marc Maturo | Email the author | 6:00am

*** begin quote ***

Tony Harlin, a lifelong Pearl River resident, puts the shot better than most, even as he ages.

The 53-year-old— who starred at Nanuet High in the mid-1970’s and still holds the Rockland County record at 661⁄2 feet (fourth-best in the state) — continued his comeback on Friday with a toss of 56 feet, 101⁄2 inches in a USATF Masters and Junior Olympics qualifier at Monsignor Farrell HS in the Oakwood section of Staten Island.

Harlin, a member of the state and Rockland County Halls of Fame—as well as the county’s Track and Field Hall of Fame — surpassed the men’s 50-to-54- year-old shot-put distance of 56 feet 1⁄2 inch, held by John Nespoli of Tennessee.

“This one was for dad,” said the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Harlin, who scaled the Toledo at 300-plus in his heyday at the University of New Mexico, and then Manhattan College, where he was a six-time IC4A champion.

{Extraneous Deleted}

“A month back or so, when I threw against some college kids, I actually won. My son went, ‘Dad, that’s great, you beat these younger kids.’ I said to him, yes, but you know what’s the difference? The next day they went out to practice, and I was in a tub of Bengay, and took aspirin for 10 days! But I still have another year left (in the 50-54 division), so I’ll keep having fun.”

Having fun—and maybe breaking records.

Catholic groups were outraged by the decisions. Patrick J. Reilly, president of the Cardinal Newman Society, an organization which seeks to “renew and strengthen Catholic identity in Catholic higher education,” slammed the Board’s decision in a Washington Times op-ed as “harassing Catholic colleges and universities,” and noted that the U.S. Court of District Appeals overturned similar NLRB decisions in 2002 and 2008.

Elizabeth Meers, a lawyer working on Manhattan College’s appeal, stated that “It’s a matter of principle for some Catholic institutions whether it is they or the government that determines whether they are Catholic.”

Kathleen Stanton Named ACI Director, Technical & Regulatory Affairs

June 15, 2011 02:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time

WASHINGTON–(EON: Enhanced Online News)–The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI, formerly The Soap and Detergent Association) has promoted Kathleen Stanton to Director, Technical & Regulatory Affairs. She previously served as Associate Director of Scientific Affairs at ACI (www.cleaninginstitute.org), the trade association for the U.S. cleaning products industry.

“Kathy Stanton is a valuable member of ACI’s scientific team, especially when it comes to her analysis of legislation, government regulations, and criteria on green chemistry and cleaning,” said Richard Sedlak, ACI’s Senior Vice President of Technical & International Affairs.

“It is more important than ever to bring a science-based focus to public policy and rule making, particularly in the area of so-called ‘green’ products, which nowadays is fraught with arbitrary and non-scientific criteria. Kathy’s work helps ensure that the cleaning products industry can continue to innovate and bring beneficial products to market.”

Stanton joined ACI (then SDA) in 2002. Her duties include research and analysis to support ACI’s technical, scientific, and oleochemical programs. Besides her work on green chemistry, she manages global consortia on high production volume chemicals, manages research on the environmental effects of major cleaning product ingredients, and works closely with the oleochemical industry to promote innovation in new uses of oleochemicals.

“Kathy Stanton is a valuable member of ACI’s scientific team, especially when it comes to her analysis of legislation, government regulations, and criteria on green chemistry and cleaning”

She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Religious Studies from Manhattan College (NY) and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Applied Ecology/Conservation, with honors from Frostburg State University (MD). Her research thesis was on combined effects of environmental temperatures and (dietary) fatty acid chain length on growth of fish. Prior to joining ACI, she worked four and a half years at the United States Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences for the Department of Surgery, where she was a Research Associate.

The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI – formerly The Soap and Detergent Association) is the Home of the U.S. Cleaning Products Industry® and represents the $30 billion U.S. cleaning products market. ACI members include the formulators of soaps, detergents, and general cleaning products used in household, commercial, industrial and institutional settings; companies that supply ingredients and finished packaging for these products; and oleochemical producers. ACI (www.cleaninginstitute.org) and its members are dedicated to improving health and the quality of life through sustainable cleaning products and practices.

ENDNOTE: Is this the way to save Catholicism?

Father John Haney receives pastor award from NCEA

Father Haney’s significant contribution to Catholic education in the diocese is maintaining St. Gabriel School as tuition-free for the more than 400 students in preschool through eighth grade. He does this by promoting stewardship in the parish and encouraging parishioners to share a portion of their time, talent and treasure in support of all parish ministries, including the school.

“When I came here 28 years ago, I didn’t know how I was going to have enough money to keep the school tuition-free,” he said. “About 20 years ago, I was going to start charging tuition. But I had obtained a copy of ‘Sharing Treasure, Time and Talent: A Parish Manual for Sacrificial Giving or Tithing’ (1982) by Msgr. Joseph Champlin, and I wondered if it would work.

“Fran Devlin, who was the chief financial officer for the diocese, told me that if I could get 15 percent of the parish to tithe, I would be successful. I said, ‘Don’t you mean 85 percent?’ He said, ‘No, just 15 percent.’ I said to myself, ‘If I can’t get 15 percent, then I ought to get out of this business.’

“Francis Nowalk, a parishioner on our financial board and parish council, really helped me put it over the top. He said, ‘Father, just give it a try.’ So we did, and we’re still going today.”

Maybe that’s the key to success … …

… … but to get parish tithing there has to be a real community.

From what I’ve seen that was never the driving principle of the “Catholic Church”. Maybe I was just corrupted and broken. “Community” was not what was being sought by the leadership.

Interestingly enough, I’ve seen spin offs of “Catholics” who formed their own “Communities” when they could find them at a local parish. Maybe that something organic that folks need.

Even today, I have seen folks, mostly old, drive a self-organizing effort without priestly involvement, or with minimal involvement, to satisfy that urge.

Todays “Big Catholic Church” is all about money. And, that’s why it’s dying. Sure, the Gooferment is putting the sword to it since it wants no rival for the loyalty of the people. But, the “Catholic Church” sealed its fate when it gave up the battle for the hearts and minds of its children. By allowing the “Secular Progressives” to take over education, the war was lost.

Now a fraction of its former size, scope, and influence, with its “brand” shattered by CINO politicians, as well as renegade supposedly “Catholic” organizations — colleges and universities, religious orders, and “committees”, the future path is easily seen.

Could it be that this priest has the key to reversing the downward spiral?

It’s not just “free” school; it’s the vibrant parish to support all Catholicism.

Only time will tell and us fat old white guy injineers are natural born “the glass is half empty” kinda guys.
