POSITRACTION: Swans form monogamous pair bonds; some for life

http://www.divinecaroline.com/22368/94736-eight-animals-mate

Eight Animals That Mate for Life
By: Care2

*** begin quote ***

Humans in many cultures like to think of themselves as a faithful species, but when it comes to true fidelity, many other animals offer better examples of how to keep a relationship together. Although monogamy and lifelong pair bonds are generally rare in the animal kingdom, eight animals pull it off.

1. Swans

Swans form monogamous pair bonds that last for many years, and in some cases, these can last for life. Their loyalty to their mates is so storied that the image of two swans swimming with their necks entwined in the shape of a heart has become a nearly universal symbol of true love.

*** end quote ***

[JR: There’s almost something naive about the meme that Frau Reinke, I, and others were taught as children — i.e., no sex before marriage. And, find your soul mate and stick like glue. Bruce Springsteen lamented: “Catholic girls start much too late”. What does he know? In doing the Jasper obits, I’m continually amazed at the “scores” of my fellow alumni. Decades of marriage — not the other kind. Four, five, and even six. That’s amazing today in our “divorce at the drop of a hat” “Secular Progressive” culture. With a ton of excuses — money, sex, itch, excitement, found better, younger, thinner, smarter, or just bored. Personally, I’ve lived through and seen the damage of divorce on children. When I read this — and like most stuff on the inet, I have no idea if it’s true — I just smiled and thought. Yup, it’s the “plan”. And, what bliss. Hope everyone finds their “soul mate”. It’s beautiful when you do. And, it has little to do with sex. Guess those old Nuns and Brothers were onto something?]

JBLOGGER: Petrone, Louis S. [MC1957] mentions Reinke’s blood drive

http://www.keywestlou.com/2011/06/sunday-yesterday-i-was-up-early.html

My Life in Key West
MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2011

*** begin quote ***

I am a Manhattan College graduate. Manhattan men are known as Jaspers. After the founder of the College, Brother Jasper.

Jasper John R. is a loyal blog reader. He too is a Manhattan grad. Ergo, the Jasper name. He comments frequently to this blog.

Jasper lives some where in New Jersey. He is a bit younger than me, but not my much I suspect.

Jasper’s wife, Evelyn Reinke, died of cancer. Evelyn’s birthday is July 1. Her neice thought it would be nice to celebrate Evelyn’s memory and birthday by doing something more than just sitting around and talking of her. She came up with the idea of a blood drive. Apparently Evelyn had roughly 125 pints of blood and 75 of platlets in her attempts to survive.

So a blood drive in Evelyn’s honor has been planned for July 1. It will be at the Micro Waste facility , 5 Industrial Drive, New Brunswick, NJ. From noon to six in the evening.

Go! Give! Help replenish the gift of life!

Telephone 732-565-5880 to sign up. If you give elsewhere, remember to say it is honor of Evelyn Reinke.

Let me know how it goes, Jasper.

*** end quote ***

[JR: It's nice that "Key West Lew" used his global blog to mention Frau Reinke. She'd be so embarrassed by any "fuss". In the grand scale of things, all we can do is try. Just put one foot in front of the other. That she'd insist on. Thanks to my fellow Jasper, Key West Lou.]

Peter E. Joseph (1931 – 2011)

Joseph, Peter E.

Peter Ephraim Joseph passed away Saturday, June 25th 2011 after a brief battle with pneumonia and cancer, with his wife of 53 years Bernice, daughter Nancy, son Michael, and their families by his side.

Peter was born at St Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers on March 20, 1931, and grew to attend St. Mary’s School and Saunders High School. Upon graduation, Peter attended Westchester Community College, prior to his military service. In 1952, Peter completed basic training, leadership school and electronics training, and was sent to Okinawa, where he was stationed with the Army’s 87th Ordinance Battalion, 16th Ordinance Company. Peter spent his tour as one of only five specialists repairing and maintaining the Army’s largest anti-aircraft equipment, destined for duty in the Korean conflict, was promoted to Private First Class, and was honorably discharged from the military in 1954.

On May 3rd 1958, Peter married Bernice Sheedy, also of Yonkers. Peter’s career path took him to Consolidated Edison, where he used his engineering skills over 4 decades at multiple power generation and transmission facilities, including “Big Alice” on the East River and Indian Point. Throughout his life, Peter was devoted to his wife, his family, and fellow veterans. Peter and Bernice became the proud parents of two children, Michael William and Nancy Marie. Peter returned to school and graduated in 1976 from Manhattan College, which subsequently was also his daughter’s alma mater.

He actively participated in the sports and activities of his children often from behind the scenes. Peter spent over 40 years supporting those who served in the military by investing his time and energy in the Catholic War Veterans (CWV), the Yonkers Central Committee of Veterans Organizations (CCVO), and the American Legion. Peter was the chairman of the Annual Oratorical Competition of the Yonkers Memorial Day Committee for the past 28 years; a Dept. of NYS Vice Commander for the CWV, past Chairman of the CCVO, and volunteer for many veteran-focused event committees in Yonkers. Peter was also a planning board member of the “Color It Proud” program for the past 32 years, Chairman of the Americanism Award Committee for 2 score and 7 years, past Post Commander and Executive Committee member and Adjutant of the Bajart Post 1122, and member of the Executive Board of the Westchester American Legion. As recognition of his significant service and accomplishments within the community of war veterans, Peter was selected as a 2008 inductee into New York State’s Veterans Hall of Fame, and honored by the Proclamation of a Peter Ephraim Joseph Day on June 29th, 2008.

Peter is survived by his wife of 53 years Bernice (Sheedy) Joseph; daughter Nancy Parker and her family: Dean and daughters Olivia Skye and Sophia Noelle; son Michael and his family, Janet and son William Peter; sister-in-law Arleen (Sheedy) McLaughlin and her family: Roy and children Mitchell, Andrew John, Meredith, and Roy Douglas, and their spouses and 10 children; and brother-in-law Ronald Sheedy. Peter was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law John (Jack) Sheedy, sister Doris (Joseph) Reno, sister Agnes (Joseph) Parsons, and nephew Mark Parsons.

Calling hours will be at Whalen and Ball funeral home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers, on Tuesday from 2-4pm and from 7-9 pm . The funeral mass will be at 10 am at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church at 103 South Broadway in Yonkers, and will be immediately followed by the burial service at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Cemetery Rd in Yonkers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks any contributions be provided to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund in his name, at http://www.legion.org/donate/legacy_scholarship or (317) 630-1203.

The former Piscataway High School star, who won an NBA Championship ring with the 2000 Los Angeles Lakers and is making a name for himself as a college hoops television analyst, is holding the inaugural All-State Basketball Clinic at New Brunswick High School next month.

Celestand is teaming with Mars Mellish, a former hardwood rival at St. Peter-New Brunswick who later played at Manhattan College and has been a personal instructor for the past four years. JEMAIL: Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961) gov responsibility — wide view

Dear Jasper John,

Is Gerard Nadal of Lifenews.com kidding when he says the it “one of the greatest lies and slurs” regarding pro-lifers is that they only care about the baby until it is born, The recent budgets proposed by supposedly pro-life Republicans and Tea Partiers demonstrate how little they care about children after they are born. The moral blindness of these men and women can not be exaggerated – under their policies our national treasure was given to the greediest people in the country, who then proceeded to gamble it away with stupid investments, start unwarranted wars and employ unwise social policies. Now they have the colossal gall to refuse to raise taxes on the wealthy and drastically cut the income and benefits of families trying to raise children in a very difficult economy.

He claims that “responsibility for raising the child resides with the parents, not society”. If this is true it is certainly also true that the parents should decide whether they should have the child or not. If parents know in advance they can not afford a child why should a government with no responsibility for the child have any say in the matter?

I do not accept this narrow view of governmental responsibility and I am willing to pay taxes to support any needy child via governmental programs. Every effort should be made to reduce the number of abortions by supplying medical care, nutrition and a decent place to live, Making life as miserable as possible for women and then using draconian laws to force them to carry babies to term seems a senseless policy.

Sincerely yours,
Donald M Stebbins
BS 1961

[JR: (1) Well I doubt any one involved in this discussion is kidding. I think that glumping all the things into the pot confuses the issue. Both the D's and the R's have really screwed up. Wars -- undeclared and unpaid for -- are a giant mistake. Spending is out of control. And, imho, "tax the rich" is immoral, ineffective, and inefficient. Rich people are people; not targets of plunder. They aren't going to stand around and be robbed; they have options. (2) We have four generations of "welfare farmers". We have 52% takers with 48% earners. We have Gooferment taking over "charity" which should be the province of voluntary organizations. They will do it better, and at a lower overall cost. (3) Well, it's not about anyone's "acceptance". There is not enough wealth to pour into the Gooferment ratholes to sustain it. It's generally guesstimated that sending a dollar to the Gooferment results in less than 50¢ to a service. Direct charity to, for example, the Salvation Army, only has a dime of overhead. And, they are much more effective. A little L libertarian doesn't want to force anyone to do anything. We've demonstrated that Gooferment "charity" doesn't work. Just out of curiosity, so why can't we try something different?]

[JR: Pretty interesting that we can get the scoop straight from the Old Man with near zero delay. Jasper news is thin during the summer. So, tell us your story. Rant. Or lament. My personal objective is two stories per day. Just wanted you to know there's still life on this end of the wire. How intelligent is left up to you. Today would have been Frau Reinke's 64th birthday. We're celebrating with a blood drive. Her neice in law had a great idea. Can't help Frau Reinke, so we'll help others. Hope you'll join us. If not in New Brunswick New Jersey, then where ever you are. Summer time holiday weekends are the worst for donations. And, if you need it, you're depending upon the kindness of strangers. As she did 175 times. It's truly the gift of life. Donna Nobis Pacem.]

ENDNOTE: Governor Andrew Cuomo still identifies himself as a Catholic

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=10844

Journalists reflect on Church role in New York’s vote for same-sex marriage
June 29, 2011

*** begin quote ***

Three different journalists offer interesting perspectives on the role that Catholicism played in the political battle over same-sex marriage in New York:

Columnist Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, rejoicing at the legislative victory for gay rights, focuses on the role played by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who still identifies himself as a Catholic despite flouting Church teaching on a number of issues, both personal and political. The governor’s own remarks on that subject are revealing:

“It’s troubling for me as a Catholic to be at odds with the church,” he began, before dissolving into a wry laugh. “Having said that, it seems that my entire political life, the tension with the church has come up again and again.”

Cuomo’s perception is accurate. He has always been at odds with the Church: on his support for legal abortion and same-sex marriage, on his open relationship with a woman who is not his wife. He claims to be troubled by this conflict, but he is evidently not too troubled to find it humorous—let alone to change his policies and amend his life. After all, the governor’s very odd version of Catholicism may earn occasional rebukes from bishops, but it wins kudos from Maureen Dowd and the New York Times.

*** end quote ***

[JR: It would seem time for the Church to take a stand on CINO politicians. Now, I don't hold myself out as an exemplar. "Let he who is without sin". But, Jesus did drive the money changers from the Temple. How can allowing these CINOs give public scandal helping the bishops shepherd their flocks in these troubled times? Sorry, but if an organization can't control it's own trademark, what can it do? Argh]
