POSITRACTION: Hidden Act of Charity

One of Mel Gibson’s Hidden Acts of Charity Revealed
via LewRockwell.com Blog by Lew Rockwell on 10/16/11

*** begin quote ***

“[Robert Downey, Jr.], who had well-publicized bouts with drinking and drug abuse, said that by sticking up for Gibson, he was simply returning the favor. After his imprisonment and arrests on drug charges made him uninsurable and thus prevented him from being hired in Hollywood, it was Gibson who stepped up and paid his insurance bond on the 2003 film ‘The Singing Detective.’

“‘He kept a roof over my head and put food on my table,’ Downey remembered.

“He said that all Gibson asked in return was that Downey do the same for another person who was struggling.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: Here's a lesson in the old "judge not; lest you be judged" and "do your charitable works privately". I'm very careful of forming opinions of folks especially were substances are involved. Everyone has flaws. Have to reserve criticism for those that hold themselves out as an exemplar or a leader and then are found to have very clay feet. Gibson has some strange beliefs but obviously has charity in his heart. I hope that all those with substance problems find their way to peace. Donna Nobis Pacem]

JNEWS: Wanner, Thomas [MC????] runs for mayor in Westwood NJ

Birkner faces pair of rivals in Westwood
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2011 LAST UPDATED: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5, 2011, 11:09 AM
BY CHRIS HARRIS STAFF WRITER THE RECORD

*** begin quote ***

WESTWOOD — The council president and a former mayor are hoping to unseat the current mayor in a battle to run the borough.

Democratic incumbent John Birkner faces challenges from Republican Council President Robert Miller, as well as Thomas Wanner, an independent who was Westwood’s mayor from 2004 to 2007.

Candidates

Mayor (four-year term)

John Birkner Jr.*, Democrat, associate’s degree from Bergen Community College, attended Ramapo College and Rutgers University.
Robert Miller, Republican, council president, bachelor of science from Rider University.
Thomas Wanner, independent, former mayor, attended Manhattan College.

*** and ***

Wanner said he will keep a careful eye on spending, noting that when he left office in 2007, the borough had a $2.4 million surplus “which they have been utilizing the last four years to maintain the taxes within a 2 percent cap without making any tough decisions.”

Wanner was critical of the current administration for “debt spending without any consideration on how those expenses will affect taxpayers down the road.” He said he will try to ensure taxes don’t go up.

As for flooding, the former mayor said he tried to acquire a permit in 2007 “to dredge a portion of the Pascack Brook and start the process of cleaning out the brook in sections.” He was unclear as to the status of the permit. He would continue those efforts.

“I tend to be a very passionate person,” said Wanner, a business consultant who helps restore troubled companies.

He, too, will work to get the hospital opened again. “There needs to be more aggressive action in bringing this hospital back,” he said.

Industry Updates: Nov 8, 2011
Dendreon Announces Election of Dennis M. Fenton to Board of Directors

Dendreon Corporation (Nasdaq: DNDN) today announced that Dennis M. Fenton has been elected to the Company’s Board of Directors, effective November 8, 2011. Dr. Fenton has 30 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, including over two decades at Amgen, Inc., where he played an instrumental role in the development of the company into a global, fully integrated, multi-billion dollar organization. Dr. Fenton’s broad background includes executive leadership roles in manufacturing, process development, sales and marketing, and operations and quality control.

“Dennis brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from the 25 years he spent at Amgen, transforming the company from a small biotech to one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, and we welcome him to Dendreon’s Board of Directors,” said Richard B. Brewer, chairman of the Dendreon Board of Directors.

As one of the longest-tenured staff members at Amgen, Inc., Dr. Fenton worked in and led virtually every function over the years, including research, process development, sales and marketing, and engineering and manufacturing. Most recently, Dr. Fenton served as executive vice president for operations and compliance officer of Amgen, Inc., until 2008. Dr. Fenton played a key role in its growth from a start-up to a leading global biotechnology company with one of the most reliable, efficient and skilled manufacturing operations in the world. He coordinated the design, construction and expansion of manufacturing facilities for Epogen® (epoetin alfa) and Neupogen® (filgrastim), considered two of the premier products in the biotechnology industry. Prior to joining Amgen, Inc., Dr. Fenton served as senior research scientist at Pfizer, Inc., and previously was a research associate and graduate student at Rutgers University. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Genelux Corporation, Napo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., and XenoPort, Inc.

“Dennis is one of the true pioneers of biotechnology, playing a key role in the development and manufacturing of truly innovative therapies, which is relevant to the work we’re doing at Dendreon, particularly as we leverage our fixed commercial infrastructure to efficiently meet a large unmet medical need for patients through the commercialization of PROVENGE,” said Mitchell H. Gold, MD, president and chief executive officer.

Dr. Fenton received his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College of New York and his doctorate of philosophy from Rutgers University of New Jersey.

JNEWS: Boss, Bill [MC1967?] Distinguished School Board Service

BOSS NAMED 2011
OUTSTANDING SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER

On Board Online • November 7, 2011
By Brian Butry Staff writer

Bill Boss, a member of the Orange-Ulster BOCES school board, is the 2011 winner of the NYSSBA’s Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service.

Boss, who has served as a school board member for nearly 30 years, received the award from NYSSBA President Florence Johnson Thursday, Oct. 27, in Buffalo, at the NYSSBA’s Annual Convention.

“Bill is a familiar and respected fixture in school board circles around the state,” said Johnson. “His colleagues said he embodies everything this award is about: energy, passion, devotion and leadership. For three decades, Bill has made public education and the children of New York State his main focus.”

Boss began his school board service on the Greenwood Lake School Board in 1982. He spent twelve years on the board and served as both president and vice president during his tenure. He joined the Orange-Ulster BOCES school board in 1989 and has held a number of leadership roles, including vice president.

Boss is also involved with the Orange County School Boards Association where he serves as legislative co-chair. He was president of the organization from 1990 to 1993.

A longtime resident of Greenwood Lake, Boss is involved in several community organizations. He is a long standing member of the Gaelic Cultural Society of Greenwood Lake and Project Children – a cultural exchange program with students from Northern Ireland.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented each year to one current or former school board member among the thousands in the state who has done the most for public education and the children of his or her community. It is the highest tribute NYSSBA bestows upon a school board member.

JNEWS: Hanna, Robert [MC1980] nominated for NJ BPU

NORTHJERSEY.COM : NEWS : STATE
New head nominated for NJ Board of Public Utilities
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 10, 2011, 4:16 PM
BY KATHLEEN LYNN STAFF WRITER THE RECORD

*** begin quote ***

Robert Hanna of Madison, a director with the state Department of Law and Public Safety, was nominated Thursday by Governor Christie as the new president of the state Board of Public Utilities.

Hanna would replace Lee Solomon, who has held the post since early 2010. Christie plans to nominate Solomon to a Superior Court judgeship, a position he held before coming to the BPU.

Both Solomon and Hanna worked for Christie when the governor was U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Hanna, a graduate of Manhattan College and the Fordham University School of Law, is currently the director of the Division of Law in the state Division of Law and Public Safety. As an assistant U.S. attorney, he worked on cases involving securities and health care fraud. Hanna also worked in a Newark law firm. Christie called Hanna “an extraordinarily qualified and talented individual.”

Hanna said he plans to look into “the responses by all of the utility companies to the snowstorm and Hurricane Irene, and assessing them, and seeing what steps should be taken going forward.”

Christie praised Solomon’s work on “expanding clean, renewable energy production like solar and offshore wind and putting forward a responsible, aggressive and achievable energy master plan for New Jersey’s energy future.”

The BPU regulates utilities, including electricity, water, natural gas and cable television. Hanna’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

NEW YORK, NY — (Marketwire) — 11/10/11 — Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) announced today that Brian Roberts will become WMG’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, by January 1, 2012. Roberts, who will report to WMG CEO Stephen Cooper, will succeed Steven Macri. Macri, who has been WMG’s Executive Vice President and CFO since 2008, has decided to leave WMG, but will remain in his position until up to the end of this year to ensure a smooth transition. Roberts currently serves as Senior Vice President and CFO of Warner/Chappell Music, WMG’s music publishing business, a position he’s held since 2007.

WMG’s Chairman of the Board, Edgar Bronfman, Jr. said, “Steve Macri has done an outstanding job, overseeing our global financial operations with skill and vision, and putting in place a team of top-flight financial executives, including Brian Roberts. Brian’s financial acumen and deep understanding of the music industry and the company make him the ideal candidate to fill this vital role.”

Prior to joining Warner/Chappell in 2007, Roberts served for five years as BMG Music Publishing’s Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration of North and South America. In that role, he managed all finance and administrative operations in that company’s Core, Contemporary Christian and Production Music divisions.

Roberts received his B.S. degree in Accounting from Manhattan College and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

MFOUND: MC Student petition

http://www.change.org/petitions/manhattan-college-athletics-department-stop-denying-access-to-gym-to-non-athlete-students

Would you let yourself be prevented from using something that you paid for?!

You pay tuition, a lot of tuition. The fact is that when you pay to go to Manhattan College, you pay for things like renovations to the school, activities that are set up for the students, and the use of facilities like the gym. The MC Athletics Department is attempting to block any non-athlete student from using the free-weight room for multiple hours! This prevents us students, who usually only have small windows of free time during the day, from working out and enjoying the facilities that we pay for!

How is your money different than an athlete students money?! The fact is that a noticeable amount of athletes (not all) do not pay to go to MC since they receive scholarship money, and the average student that pays their full tuition is being restricted from something that they pay for so that students that don’t pay can use it!

Tell the Manhattan College Athletics Department that Draddy Gym is our gym and we will use it when we want!

# – # – #

[JR: I found this "interesting" in that it's "reserved", yet at least one report that it's "unused". Hmm. Lot of money for something not to be used.]

Sometimes I wonder

Sometimes I wonder if things should have been better left unsaid,
or if I hold them inside forever and pretend,
I wonder if things would have been different
If I wouldnt have have gotten myself into the mess I created,
Now, I feel like I am hated,
This isnt just one situation its many,
But no matter what happens, I’ve had enough already
Now I have to move on and carry this pitty
That all of this has made me feel so shitty
If things are never right and I am always wrong,
Then more the reason I need to move on,
Just like my sister and my relatives,
Theres no reason that things should be as is,
Now I can only remember the past,
and how long these memories will last…

JHQ: Veteran Program Expands

http://www.manhattan.edu/news_and_events/featured/11_10_11_1.shtml

Manhattan College’s Veteran Program Expands

For nearly a century, Manhattan College has invested in the education of veterans, spanning from World War I to the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars. Most recently, the College is helping to support the education of 45 veterans as a partner in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program. Since the bill was passed, Manhattan has doubled the number of enrolled veterans.

An ever-growing number of young men and women in the United States joined the military to fight for their country in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, and to help others around the world receive the same freedoms that U.S. citizens have. According to the 2010 U.S. Census’ American Community Survey, nearly 1,408,612 veterans in the United States are between the ages of 18 and 34. But thanks to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, most veterans now will have a better chance of receiving education benefits that in most cases pay for 100 percent of their college degrees.

“Manhattan College is proud to welcome our veteran students to campus and honor these men and women for their service,” says Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of the College. “They not only bring skills, experience and values to add to our community but also contribute to the Lasallian education of placing service at the core.”

The Post-9/11 GI Bill was passed on Aug. 1, 2009, and allows veterans who served in active duty on or after Sept. 11 to receive educational benefits from a college or university approved for GI Bill benefits, such as Manhattan College, and pays up to $17,500 of the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition. In addition to veterans, the bill allows active duty service members to transfer education benefits to a dependant or spouse.

President Obama made an amendment to the Post-9/11 GI Bill on Aug. 3, 2011, when the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 was signed into law. The act sanctions the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to pay more than $17,500 in tuition and fees in seven states, including Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. In order to qualify, students must have been enrolled at the same college or university since Jan. 4. 2011, and be enrolled in a program for which the tuition and fees for full-time attendance during the 2010-2011 academic year exceeds $17,500.

As a partner in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program, Manhattan College veteran students are now eligible (based on length of service) for tuition and fees paid by the VA up to $17,500 with Manhattan College matching up to $15,000 under the Yellow Ribbon program for the fall and spring semesters during the academic year. Veteran students will also receive a housing allowance (based on enrollment and eligibility tier). The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits, and benefits are generally payable for up to 15 years following release from active duty.

“We at Manhattan College are very proud of the increasing number of veterans who are pursuing their education as part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program,” says Richard Satterlee, Ph.D., vice president for student life. “In my experience, these men and women are often some of our most serious students and recognize in a unique way what a true privilege it is to be on a college campus.”

From the first day that veteran students express an interest in attending Manhattan College, the College strives to make the process as smooth as possible with assistance in admission, financial aid and residence life. Students work directly with Agnes Flynn, the College’s certifying officer for the veterans, who administers all of the paperwork for admission and registration, as well as answers questions. In addition, student financial services meets with veteran students, when they start, to explain the reimbursement process.

The College’s student development and residence life team are also dedicated to helping students become acclimated to campus life and the overall transition process. In fact, Sonny Ago, Ed.D., assistant vice president for student life, was also recently hired to help enhance and develop programming for veterans at the College.

“Whether a veteran student chooses to live on or off campus, student development is available to assist and support students with any questions,” says Michael Carey, Psy.D., dean of students. “From the start of the semester, we encourage students to join clubs and activities and immerse themselves in campus life.” Carey also added that as a way to welcome veteran students, student development would host a dinner on Nov. 15.

As an active supporter of the tremendous benefits available from the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program, the College’s admissions office is available Monday-Friday by appointment to answer questions and also hosts regular Saturday information sessions (including Nov. 12 and 19, and Dec. 3 and 10). To learn more, visit http://manhattan.edu/admissions/visits.shtml.

“We at Manhattan College are grateful for our veterans’ gift of service, and we are happy to do our part to help these students to make the transition to the next stage of their lives,” O’Donnell says.

What the Joe Paterno Scandal and the Penn State Riots Say About America
by Wayne Allyn Root

*** begin quote ***

How could this happen in my America? Is everyone truly mad? Is winning football games more important than a 10-year old boy’s safety? How about dozens of innocent little boys? Is protecting a respected institution more important than stopping a child rapist? Why would educated responsible administrators with 6-figure and 7-figure salaries make the same decision to cover-up a heinous crime as priests and bishops and cardinals for the Catholic Church?

*** end quote ***

I can’t imagine any of the thinking that allowed this to go on. “Papa Joe”? Mike McQueary? Any of the executives of Penn State? Anybody?

I can’t understand Penn State any more than I can understand the Catholic Church.

I can’t understand the Parents and Guardians of these abused children.

I can understand that “We, The Sheeple” are tolerant of celebrities, star athletes, and “winning” coaches.

I’m speechless, but I’d love to be on that jury.

I’m ashamed of Penn State and the Catholic Church.
