2012-Jan-15JEMAIL: Apoldo, Lou (MC1963) finds evidence of hypercritical "Secular Progressives"John,Don't you find it hypercritical that the same secular progressives who support a "woman's right to chose" because it is her body to control, would impose their overreaching government control on you via this "presumed consent" legal tactic when they want to steal a kidney from your corpse? Lou Apoldo BCE '63 # - # - # [JR: No, I'd call it more "disingenuousness". See it's all about using the guns of Gooferment to tell people what to do. 2012-Jan-15JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973] prefers donation to worm foodJohn,I would fully agree that the Church should be in the forefront of encouraging its members to donate their organs after death. After all, isn't it a central tenet of Catholicism that the body is just a "vessel" and that the "real person" has gone to elsewhere after death? (As I've pointed out to fellow somewhat-agnostic friends, the alternative of hanging around for the worms or the flames isn't a real cheerful thought...) On the other hand, I'd have to agree with the archbishop that "our organs should be donated as a gift to others and not as a duty," : I.E., the state should NOT have the right to DEMAND organ donation from those whose religious beliefs are against it. As a default option however, if nothing is indicated one way or the other, far better for the State to give someone a heart and a life than to give the worms a tasty dessert. McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973] # - # - # - # - # [JR: I think we should have a "free market" in organs. After all the "witch doctors" get paid to transplant them. Bureaucrats get paid to administrate the "organ donation program". What's wrong with getting paid for your spare parts after you no longer need them. Poor people are being defrauded to supply rich folks with those parts. Let them pay for them. Then, there would be no need for "organ waiting lists"! I can see it know a poor minority father gets to put his kid through college when he dies. Yeah, he could have had life insurance, but he was poor. 2012-Jan-16JNEWS: Webb, Joe [MC1978] published "Does a Plumber Need a Web Site?"http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/549458Unconventional New Book Offers Lighthearted, Hands-On Approach to Small-Business Marketing and Promotion "Does a Plumber Need a Web Site?" provides guidance to businesses to increase the effectiveness of their communications and their brand among their customers and prospects in today's fast-changing media environment. HARRISVILLE, RI, January 16, 2012 -- During a marketing presentation in early 2011, an attendee asked Dr. Joe Webb, "Does a plumber need a Web site?" This question inspired an unconventional new business book, written with "co-conspirator" Richard Romano, about a handful of interesting and motivated characters facing small-business sales and marketing challenges. A year and a half's worth of conversations with graphic communications professionals and small business owners across the country and around the world answered the question, and led to the book's title "Does a Plumber Need a Web Site?: Mad Dentists, Harried Haircutters, and Other Edgy Entrepreneurs Offer Promotion Strategies for Small and Mid-Size Businesses." The book is available in paperback and Amazon Kindle editions, and discusses today's and tomorrow's practical strategies for marketing. The book explains why small business has to be more aggressive with its promotions because of the proliferation of new digital communications formats. "It's not as simple as the Yellow Pages and a church bulletin ad," the authors explain. "Does a Plumber Need a Web Site?" has concrete examples of how multiple media channels work together to reinforce brands and enhance the visibility of a business, especially a small business. The book carefully explains the steps that companies can take to implement these new marketing services, allowing businesses of all sizes to maximize their marketing and promotion efforts while minimizing their costs. The centerpiece of the book is eight detailed and entertaining "case studies," a cross-section of hypothetical small and mid-size businesses and all the marketing strategies -- print, non-print, old media, new media, social media, and even some cutting-edge media -- they can employ to build their own businesses. These sample businesses run the gamut from a business-to-business manufacturing company, a business-to-business service provider, a small retail business like a hair salon, two types of restaurants (sports bar/pub and an upscale bistro), a professional services provider like a plumber, a medical services provider like a dentist, and a fitness center. The book looks at how all these companies would have marketed themselves 30 years ago, how they market themselves today, and how they likely will do so in 2015. None of the case studies are real, but the business situations and challenges they illustrate are faced by entrepreneurs every day. "Does a Plumber Need a Web Site?", an entertaining and often funny walk through business media, is designed to stimulate ideas and provoke thoughts about how to engage customers and prospects. Whatever business you are in, this book will get you chuckling -- and seriously thinking about the new ways of promoting a business today, and in the future.Visit the book's Web site, doesaplumberneedawebsite.com, to meet the book's cast of characters, read a free chapter, and download the book's handy "media chart" that identifies the full range of communications media available to businesses today. 2012-Jan-20JNEWS: Jackette, Justin [MC2003] remembers his basketball timehttp://www.lohud.com/article/20060321/SPORTS01/603210306/Justin-Jackette-Manhattan-grad-can-hear-hoops-callJustin Jackette: Manhattan grad can hear hoops' call Mar. 21, 2006 *** begin quote *** Justin Jackette will never forget how the last day of his college basketball career started. The former Iona Prep star was asked by Manhattan College teammate Jared Johnson to be quiet — before Jackette had awakened. It was shortly after 6 a.m. on March 21, 2003 — the day after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq — and Johnson mumbled something in their Boston hotel room that woke up Jackette. "Shut up, man," Jackette remembers Johnson telling him. "You've been saying something about the war. What are you talking about? I'm trying to get some sleep." Actually, Johnson had heard Jackette's voice on the TV that was left on overnight. Jackette was speaking during the Jaspers' press conference at the FleetCenter after their practice the day before 14th-seeded Manhattan fell to No. 3 seed and eventual champion Syracuse 76-65 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. "A reporter asked what it was like playing an NCAA tournament game with the war going on," Jackette said. "They led off the 2 a.m. (ESPN) 'SportsCenter' with my answer. I was talking about the analogy coaches make when they say, 'It's going to be a war.' They first showed a video of a fighter plane with my voice talking over that, and then switched to me on the podium at the press conference." It was Jackette's only NCAA tournament appearance in his three years at Manhattan. (He joined the Jaspers after transferring from William & Mary.) *** and *** "But it's been a couple years since I've been out of it, so I got the 'Get away from it for a while' out of my system," Jackette said. "Now that the tournament has come around, I miss it. I never thought I'd say I want to go to practice again — that was my least favorite part of playing. But now I wish I could go out and practice one more time." *** end quote *** Jackette, Justin [MC2003] # - # - # - # - # 2012-Jan-20 @ 08:18 |

2012-Jan-17Comment on JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973] prefers donationby McFadden, Michael J. [MC1973]John, as you know, I’ve been writing about and battling the “slippery slope” in the area of smoking bans and social engineering (kinda like civil engineering except the nuts have mouths… ;> ) for quite a while, so I tend to look toward “evil futures.” I don’t want to spoil anyone’s reading pleasure by giving away crucial plot points, but there’s a story in Harlen Ellison’s collection, “Dangerous Visions,” that looks toward a future of mandated organ donation and at least one aspect of it is decidedly “non-purty.” What happens when the State decides that the need for organ donation to save lives justifies “harvesting” the organs from, for instance, condemned child murderers, so that “good and productive” members of society can continue to live and do good works? Sounds like a better idea than paying for those miscreants to live in five-star prison-hotels for the rest of their lives, eh? But think about the incentive for the rich and powerful to lower the bar on just which crimes eventually become deserving of such punishment. To some extent I see the paid organ donation business in the same light. If I can sell a kidney for $10,000 to feed my starveling children, who draws the line to say I can’t sell a leg or a lung to buy a condo or a few kilos of crack cocaine? Or, as a voter, to overlook the need for child welfare since the lazy parents can always just feed their kids by first being required to donate some blood? Basically, on a gut level, I kind of agree with the organ selling philosophy as you outline the argument. But I’ve learned to be leery of slippery slopes and the “Good Germans” who look at their neighbors and say “Well, it’s really not THAT much of an imposition to take this particular little step.” Michael J. McFadden Peace Studies, 1973 # - # - # - # - # [JR: Us, "good germans", think if you're that desparate for crack, a condo, or to feed your family, it's still YOUR body to do as you see fit.] # - # - # - # - # |
2012-Jan-22ENDNOTE: Politicians' “smart investments.”http://biggovernment.com/mikeflynn/2011/12/30/exclusive-photo-nancy-pelosi-livin-la-vida-1/EXCLUSIVE PHOTO: Nancy Pelosi: Livin’ La Vida 1% by Mike Flynn *** begin quote *** I believe Leader Pelosi on this. I think she really has dedicated her life to the 99% and 1%. Its just that her focus has been on using advocacy for the 99% to get into the 1%. And it seems to be working. In 2010, her last year as Speaker, her net worth exploded by 62%: Pelosi’s drastic growth, from an initial $21.7 million in 2009, is attributed to recent stock gains and smart investments. Her husband reported raking in $1 million to $5 million last year from a sale of Apple stocks. Funny how so many of these politicians make so many “smart investments.” *** end quote *** Now, as a little L libertarian, I am all for EVERYONE working hard, doing good, and making millions. I'm for the freedom and liberty that "millions" can be denominated in whatever the individual deems important: Federal Reserve Note's certificates of appreciation; units of recognition -- Q rating like Donal Trump, the adulation of fame like Taylor Swift's adoring teens tweens and fat old white guy injineers, or the teacher receiving the hugs of grateful students. Whatever floats your boat. The politicians and bureaucrats, as well as all those who extract wealth corruptly from the process of Gooferment, seem to take advantage of their position. Add that in to the Regulatory Capture of Wall Street. And, the Crony Capitalism and Corporate Welfare and you have the reason that those "smart investments" always seem to pay off. Then, for the Speaker to "vacation" at a 10k$/day hotel while "supporting" "Occupy Wall Street" just puts a knot in my tummy. It's OK for you to defraud us. Just don't rub our noses in it. # - # - # - # - # |
