Commuter marriages on the rise
in: Analysis, Culture, Latest Trend

*** begin quote ***

Today’s technology is partly the reason. Unlimited cellphone minutes and video chats via FaceTime or Skype mean being apart doesn’t have to feel so isolating. “It can keep you together while you’re apart,” Stafford said. “It keeps you connected.”

But even the best technology is a poor substitute for being together.

Linda Young is a Texas psychologist that does relationship coaching, has lived apart from her husband for several years. She recommends that couples:

– Resist the urge to shelve unpleasant feelings out of fear of ruining the time you do spend together.

– Keep in touch in old-fashioned ways like writing notes and letters.

– Get creative, like watching the same movie so you can talk about it.

Living apart is not all chocolate and flowers and I-miss-yous. Having separate homes often means lonely weekends and having to show up solo at get-togethers with friends and family. And that can wear on a relationship.

*** end quote ***

Luckily, I never had much of that. I did have to go to the USAF survival schools after marriage. Frau Reinke and I hated that. We were never apart for more than a week after that. People used to tease us that we were joined at the hip. We were. I miss her.

This story surprised me, because I didn't think folks got married much any more.

Except for those folks trying to force a cultural issue.

Seems that the girls and boys don't see the wisdom of the old ways.

In my case, I was expected to live at home until I went in the service. In Frau Reinke's case, she was expected to live at home until she wed. That's just the way life was. There was no discussion. No moving in together.

Common wisdom: It's not fair to the girl. Why buy the cow, when the boy can get the milk for free.

Less common wisdom: It's not fair to the boy. Why not get started on your real life? You don't want an "easy" woman for your wife. It'll nag you.

So, it's good to see folks still getting married. Even at a distance.

And, there's a move afoot to have the Gooferment get out of the "marriage business" and call everything a "domestic partnership".

Seems like marriage will be left to The People. Sounds a little like the Tenth Amendment.

Hope all my fellow alums find these trends as inspiring as I do.

How can Alma Mater survive the coming "downsizing" (i.e., the estimates I've read is that only 100 Colleges and Universities are needed and will survive to thrive) if the students and alums don't support Her efforts to generate "buzz"?]

Hi John!

Hope you survived our rather mild winter if flying colors!

Re the safe: If indeed it was an honest tale, I'd agree with you.  The seller weighed the option of having the safe cut open to see what was in it, decided it was a better deal on the odds to just sell it, unopened, on EBay.  The buyer obviously bought it to make the gamble that there MIGHT be something inside of it worth more than the price he paid for it: therefore he brought it to a welder to be opened (i.e. destroyed) and be left with a worthless object -- or, possibly, whatever was inside.   I don't think I'd see a moral problem there at all unless you want to discuss the morality of gambling!

I once had a similar opportunity at a storage locker auction.  One of the dozen or so units opened and auctioned that day simply had a large safe inside it, locked.  The thing was about three feet tall and probably weighed at least several hundred pounds.  Someone eventually bid it up to $500 or so and probably either had a skilled safecracker open it or had a welder attack it.  Heh, of course if it was filled with cocaine or rigged to explode, THEN problems might crop up -- moral or otherwise.

:)

[JR: Or even worse, IMAGINE if it was filled with CIGARETTES? Everybody would be in jail. ROFL. This reminds me when I'm trying to persuade someone to convert to "GOLD-BUG-ary" (i.e., Gold is the only true "money") — yeah, I know tin foil hat — I say: "When you open the mythical pirates chest, what do you want to see? A pile of US "Dollars", Confederate money, <Insert favorite defunct country's currency>, or gold coins?" In this case, the buyer got dollars. I'd want those gold coins. But then I'm just a fat old white guy injineer and don't understand "ecky nom ICKs". Thanks for reading, but late on Saturday night, you should be out and about. Not reading my cranky stuff. Introducing Manhattan College’s Muslim director of Holocaust studies
A former official at the US Holocaust Museum describes Mehnaz Afridi as ‘almost a dream come true’
By Nathan Burstein
March 5, 2012, 12:38 pm

*** begin quote ***

Whatever springs to mind when you hear the term “Holocaust educator,” Mehnaz Afridi probably isn’t it.

A Pakistani-born Muslim, Afridi spent her early childhood in cities not exactly known for their Jewish sensivitivies. For several years of adolescence, she attended a Lebanese-run school where crossing the word “Israel” out of textbooks was an annual tradition. It’s a running joke that her father’s side of the family, from near the border with Afghanistan, “is sort of related to the Taliban.”

But appearances can be deceiving, a major theme of Afridi’s new job. Since the start of the academic year, the 40-something Islam scholar has served as the director of Holocaust studies at New York’s Manhattan College, a position that “felt like it was God-sent,” she says. On the side, Afridi writes articles about the need for Muslim-Jewish co-existence, and has outlined a book called “Shoah Through Muslim Eyes,” which she hopes to complete next year. Her mother, who once visited her in Israel, now serves as an informal “spokesperson” against anti-Semitism in Pakistan, she says.
“I want to be a Muslim who’s writing and speaking out,” says Afridi, who prays five times daily and fasts during the month of Ramadan. “We need to have dialogue on the hard issues.”

JOBIT: Hanlon, Philip Peter [MC???? RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/orangecounty/obituary.aspx?n=PHILIP-HANLON&pid=156344636

PHILIP HANLON

Hanlon, Philip Peter, born January 23, 1924, beloved husband of Joan K. Hanlon, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2012 in the presence of his loving family in San Diego, CA after a brief hospital stay resulting from a fall.

Phil was born in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from the Manual Training High School in Bronx, NY, after which Phil enlisted in the US Navy and trained to become a radioman on the Destroyer Escort USS Underhill DE-682. He was later reassigned to the Fuel Tanker USS Klaskanine AOG-63. Phil was promoted to radioman 2nd class by the end of the war.

After WWII, Phil attended Manhattan College in Bronx, NY and received a BA in History. Despite having received a scholarship to George Town University Law School, Phil applied for and was accepted to the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. He completed his training and received his FBI Credentials in 1951 and was promptly assigned to the west coast office in Fresno, CA.

He was introduced to his future wife, Joan K. Greene, through her brother Arthur who was also an FBI Agent. Phil and Joan married at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Fresno, CA in 1954, then took up residence in southern CA, where they raised their five children.

In 1978, Phil retired from the FBI and became a manager of security for Occidental Petroleum, and after several years of service was selected to be the personal security manager for the CEO, Dr. Armand Hammer. Phil traveled with Dr. Hammer around the world to countries and continents such as Russia, China, Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. Phil retired from Occidental Petroleum in 1999.

After 9/11, Phil was hired under contract with the FBI to support the Bureau's ongoing government background investigations.

Phil was a devout Roman Catholic and an active member in his parish as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He and Joan built two homes during their life together; their second home was nestled in the hills of east Orange, CA where Phil encouraged his children in various 4H livestock projects. He loved this property, with its river canyon view and view of the orchards below their house.

Phil and Joan lived there for 33 years before moving to Fallbrook, CA in 2006 to be closer to their daughters living in San Diego county. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in April 2010. Joan passed away in December 2010.

Phil is survived by his five loving children, Maureen, Kevin, Elaine, Laura, and Denise. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The visitation will be held at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary, Fallbrook, CA, on Thursday, March 8, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside, CA, Friday March 9, 2012 at 12:30 p.m.

President To Speak at The Society of Friendly Sons of St. Patrick’s Anniversary Dinner in New York City on March 16
Posted on March 06, 2012

Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College, who was recently recognized as one of the top figures in education with an Irish heritage by the Irish Voice newspaper, will speak at The Society of Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in the City of New York’s Anniversary Dinner on March 16.

“We are delighted that President O’Donnell will be able to speak at our 228th Anniversary Dinner this year,” said Mark B. Codd ’71, president of The Society. “Education has always been the gateway to advancement for the Irish coming to America, and we are looking forward to President O’Donnell’s perspective on this topic.”

Following The Society of Friendly Sons of St. Patrick’s tradition, the Anniversary Dinner will include three speeches and toasts presented by Codd; Harry Smith, correspondent for NBC News; and O’Donnell. O’Donnell will deliver his speech in response to “The United States” toast at the event, which will be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers. Codd will offer “The President of the United States” toast, and Smith will reply to “The Day We Celebrate.”

The Society was formed in late 1783 by Daniel McCormick to aid impoverished and displaced Irish people living in New York City. The Society is progressing into its fourth century of dedication to charity with a common heritage and faith connecting members.

“Manhattan College has played a vital role in the history of the Irish in New York City for more than 150 years, and I am honored to represent that rich tradition at this year’s Friendly Sons dinner,” said O’Donnell. O’Donnell will also march alongside Manhattan College’s Gaelic Society, Pipes and Drums, and College community on March 17 at the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

He became Manhattan College’s 19th president on July 1, 2009. Prior to working at Manhattan College, O’Donnell served as dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University’s oldest and largest school. He also spent 17 years at Loyola University Maryland, where he was a professor of English, and from 1999-2004, director of the university-wide honors program.

Cokey Robertson coached many, many players during his 34 years as boys basketball coach at St. Maria Goretti. When asked about the all-time greats he had, Rodney Monroe obviously heads the list. But it doesn’t take long for him to mention Phil Lane, a three-year starter at point guard. The 5-foot-11 Lane was the glue that kept everything together during his time, which ended with graduation in 1996. He was the catalyst behind three seasons of 20-plus wins, averaging 18 points a game in his junior year and 24 points and eight assists as a senior.

Lane’s career wasn’t forgotten by the Baltimore Catholic League, which recently selected him to the BCL Hall of Fame. “I’m really kind of surprised, but it really is special,” Lane said.  He will be honored at the league’s induction ceremony May 3 in Baltimore. “He was silky smooth and radiant, the best passer of the basketball I ever had,” said Robertson. “He had court vision, quickness and speed ... the classic point guard.”

*** and ***

Lane played Division I basketball at Manhattan College. He was recruited by Fran Fraschilla, who left the school after Lane’s freshman season.

*** and ***

“Cokey gave me the groundwork to move on and be successful with life skills, learning teamwork, responsibility,” said Lane. “Without him in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Lane lives in Boston, where he works in the insurance business. He has been married for six years and has a 14-month-old child. He also spends time working with kids in after-school programs. “Basketball is behind me. I’m just in a regular man’s life,” Lane said.

Dear CIC,

I read with sadness this morning of the death of William E. Ennis, Sr. In Jasper Jottings this morning.  Bill was employed by the New York City Housing Development Corporation for the last several years of his working life, where I am currently employed.  NYCHDC was a very small outfit when I arrived here in 1982 and Bill was one of the 60 or so employees at the time.  When he found out that I had graduated from Manhattan College, he was happy to meet me and kind of took me under his wing.  He was a fount a very good advice and I very much enjoyed his company at social events.  I particularly remember his retirement party on Governuer’s Island when he and his friends performed their barbershop quartet melodies.  We all had a wonderful time.   Bill was a great man and a proud Jasper.  May he rest in peace.

This month, you can find Concado at the Repertorio Español Theatre, where he is starring in the off-Broadway play, Mariela en el Desierto, directed by Jerry Ruiz. Written by Karen Zacarías, a celebrated Mexican-American playwright, the play portrays a painter from a family of artists who returns home to the Mexican desert to reconcile with her father.

*** and ***

While he has come a long way, Concado still gives credit to his roots at Manhattan, explaining that his professors shaped many of the decisions he’s made in his life.

“I am so thankful for Dr. Rodney Rodriquez from the modern languages department, who really took me under his wing at Manhattan and convinced me to study abroad and appreciate the Spanish culture by reconnecting with my roots,” he notes.
Remembering his years at Manhattan, Concado only had positive memories to share from his time at the College, both as a student and as an adjunct professor.

“I had a great time at Manhattan College. It felt like such an extended family there. I had really great professors who were really invaluable to me as mentors that helped shape me as the person that I am in the way I act and carry myself. I’m very grateful for them.”

JFOUND: Dunne, Matthew [MC????] NASA's cheerleader at MC

http://intern.nasa.gov/content/ambassador-listing/school_id=183.html

Ambassador Listing
Name  State  Institution  Project

Matthew Dunne  New York  Manhattan College  Undergraduate Student Research Program

http://intern.nasa.gov/content/ambassador-listing/ambassador-profile/ambassador_id=374.html

State: New York
Institution: Manhattan College
Cohort: IV
Academic Discipline: Mechanical Engineering

Project Name: Undergraduate Student Research Program
Program Participation: Research Interest: In the spring of 2011, I was lucky enough to fulfill my dream of working for NASA via an internship through the Undergraduate Student Research Program at Johnson Space Center. As a NASA employee, I am particularly interested in research pertaining to Mission Control Center operations. This is important because real-time engineering decisions must be made constantly by all those involved at Mission Control in order to ensure mission success. My main project was the design of a software tool which Mission Control personnel use to generate a graphic of an approaching ISS visiting vehicle which can calculate angular offsets and save data for trend monitoring.

Biography: As a young child I saw math, science and engineering as an exciting way to understand the world in which we live. I realized that all man-made improvements were a direct result of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Today, as a young adult, my feelings toward STEM and the importance of same has not changed. As a NASA intern I used STEM to perform all of my duties. When a particular task was completed using science, technology, engineering or mathematics, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. It felt amazing using the skills I learned throughout my educational career and apply them to real world problems.

I feel that many young people have some natural interest in STEM fields. Whenever I am in a conversation with a younger person, I usually ask them about their interests. I then find a way to apply their interests to STEM using specific examples of how math and engineering played pivotal roles in how the particular things they are interested in came to be.

When talking with my peers I site specific interesting facts pertaining to STEM and the space industry. I find that people my age are more inclined to use sources such as the internet to further their understanding of STEM, should they desire to do so.

There are many reasons why I would like to be a NASA Student Ambassador. I feel confident I can do an excellent job in communicating to young people, as well as my fellow peers, about the Space Agency and what it does. I consider myself an above average communicator, whether it be in person, on the phone, or via the internet. Humbly, I also feel I am a likeable person and someone who will well represent NASA.

I always strive to be respectful, trustworthy and hard-working. These are the characteristics I value and what I believe are the reasons I have come this far in my life.

I feel that a large majority of people in this country have little knowledge about current NASA activities and missions. This is a shame, because the American Space Program needs the nation’s full support in order to continue their legacy of being leaders in space exploration.

Therefore, I want to be a NASA Student Ambassador so I can use my communication skills in order to help generate public interest in all NASA activities.

I am ready, willing and able to perform all the duties associated with being a NASA Student Ambassador, such as interacting with NASA affiliates, blogging, polling and attending various events. After college, I hope to start a career at NASA. I am completely devoted to this organization and everything for which it stands. I plan on using the NASA Student Ambassador program to further my passion and understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Agency.

Manhattan College To Host Civility Event on March 22
Posted on March 09, 2012

As part of Manhattan College’s commitment to increasing civility on campus and throughout the community, the College will host a faculty teach-in on Thursday, March 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Dante’s Den. A panel of nine professors will briefly discuss the concept of civility pertaining to their areas of expertise, and the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in an open dialogue.

“Civility is an important topic on college campuses,” said John Bennett, assistant director of student activities at Manhattan College. “It’s about how we treat each other, and making sure we’re respectful to one another in this small-knit community.”

After receiving the Good Neighbor Award from the Methodist Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation in October 2011, Manhattan College continues to set an example of civility in the Bronx community. Most recently, the College has also adopted a good neighbor policy in the student handbook, which aims to uphold the standards of respectful conduct for students both on and off campus. The goal of the good neighbor policy is to ensure Manhattan students show civility at all times and accept the responsibilities of good citizenship, which benefits the students and the community at large.

The Dean of Students Civility Campaign is sponsoring the event, and the public is invited to attend the event located on the third floor of Thomas Hall.

*** begin quote ***

Regular readers of the blog almost certainly have noticed that it’s been a little slow around here lately. That’s because since Danielle left to take a new job, I’ve been slowly transitioning from being the Wilton reporter to being the new education reporter. Now that I have a little less on my plate and since this is my first “official” day as the education reporter, I feel like now would be a great time for an introduction.

So here it goes:

My name is Matt Coyne. I was hired back in August as the Wilton reporter where I covered cops, courts and town government for both The Hour and the Wilton Villager. Before that I was a student at Manhattan College where I majored in communication with a concentration in journalism with minors in history and economics. During college, I interned at The New York Observer, the Pennsylvania Independent and the New Haven Register and held many editorial board positions on the campus newspaper, The Quadrangle. I’m originally from Monroe, Conn. If you’re so inclined, you can follow me on Twitter at @matt_coyne. If you’d like, you can email me at mcoyne at thehour dot com (obviously, replace the “at” with an “@” and the “dot” with a “.”).

Well, that is going to end.

Why? Because for years the USCCB has coddled the Democrats who are now our most hostile enemies in this war. Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and company will not care a whit that we cheered them on with partisan pastorals on racism, economic justice, and amnesty, while we pulled our punches on homosexuality, reception of the Eucharist, and ObamaCare. Laymen understand what bishops apparently don’t: politicians have allowed us to play in their taxpayer-funded trough because we have played by their rules. To put it bluntly, politics is tit for tat. Our former pals are not going to continue scratching our back if we punch them in the nose.

[JR: I don't think that the R's are any better than the D's. But it seems that there are a lot of CINOs with a D label. "Secular Progressives" preaching "Social Justice"! Think that the Church Leadership is ready to say "no" to the Gooferment? It's going to be messy. Will a Catholic Hospital just shut its doors? Not sell out. Not allow the Gooferment to take it over. Just close. Make a fight! First Amendment, Fifth Amendment, Fourth, Tenth. Any? What "hill" will Holy Mother Church "die on". And, how many of us will be there with her? May be surprising. Have we reached the breaking point?]
