Dowler's talk explores the everyday lives of a few groups of women who represent the many unsung actors who have not only served their nation but have also transgressed the boundaries of appropriate female behavior in order to do so. Although there are countless numbers of women who by their respective occupations have served the nation, I draw attention to three groups: women who trained to be astronauts at the height of the Cold War, contemporary women urban firefighters and U.S. servicewomen returning from the frontlines of Afghanistan and Iraq. Although each group’s experiences is unique, all share the experience of being discounted as women and of having to fight against normative codes that excluded their full counting as heroic actors. These shared experiences of exclusion and resistance are the focus here as I examine the overlapping strategies from federal to state to municipal governments for discounting their contributions. Dowler received her B.S. in Business Administration from Manhattan College and a Masters of Landscape Architecture from SUNY-ESF, Syracuse University, where she also received her PhD in Geography. He was a Marine Sergeant veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific. Kevin earned his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Manhattan College in 1951, benefiting from the GI bill. Upon graduation, he worked for Sperry Corporation for three years. He worked the Strategic Air Command in developing electronics designs for military aircraft. He considered this one of the most interesting experiences of his career. In 1954 he began a lengthy career in industrial sales of electronics for GTE in Cincinnati and Chicago and later for Sarkes Tarzian of Bloomington, Indiana. In 1979, at the age of 51, he began a second career in the financial services industry. He worked as a financial planner for Merrill Lynch in Indianapolis. He later opened a Merrill Lynch office in Bloomington, Indiana until he retired as Vice President Senior Financial Planner at the age of 75. Kevin was a 48 year member of the Bloomington Country Club where he was an avid golfer. He was also a long time member of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club. More than anything else, Kevin was an ardent outdoorsman enjoying hunting and training bird dogs. He was a strong supporter of wildlife habitat restoration and a member of Pheasants Forever and Quails Forever. In addition to his parents, Kevin was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Griffin Joyce in 1964, his Third wife, Susan Winslow Joyce in 2011 and his sister, Justine Joyce McVicker in 1995. Oakley, 90, of Southbury, died peacefully February 25, surrounded by his children. He was born November 15, 1922, in the Bronx, N.Y. Mr Oakley is a veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the US Navy and served with Seabees in the South Pacific. Through the GI Bill, he graduated from Manhattan College as a civil engineer in 1949. His children Eileen Brooks and Cecilia Marino of Newtown, Virginia Kemper of St Louis, Mo., Patty Oakley of Lakeville, Mass., Ed Oakley of Yardley, Penn., Grace Dennison of Redding, and Charlotte Slater of Corcoran, Minn.; their spouses Kevin Brooks, Jim Kemper, Jory Dennison, Susan Weidle, and Forrest Slater; 14 grandchildren; and his sister Mary Kane of Dayton, Ohio survive Mr Oakley. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn (Worgull), whom he married in 1953. After leaving New York City, the Oakleys lived in Brewster, N.Y., South Salem, N.Y., and then retired to St Petersburg, Fla., before moving to Southbury. As a devout Catholic he was very active in St Lawrence O’Toole in Brewster, and St Mary’s Parish in Ridgefield. A civil engineer, Mr Oakley operated his own construction company. A fierce Pinochle player and avid outdoorsman, he remained active throughout his whole life, whether it be jogging, Aikido, cycling, swimming, or taking the grandchildren for a hike in the woods. Of all his interests, his family was always the most important. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, especially the staff at River Glen in Southbury, where he has received loving care the last few years. Landgrebe of New Milford, CT, died at his home Monday February 25, 2013 at the age of 78. Known to his loving family and friends as Dick or Rich, he was born on June 28, 1934 in New Rochelle, NY, a son of the late Albert and Frances (Sexton) Landgrebe. He was raised in Pelham N.Y. and graduated from Manhattan College in 1957 with a BBA. Mr. Landgrebe, a respected finance official, was the Chief Financial Officer at several hospitals including Clifton Springs Hospital, Kings Highway Hospital and New Milford Hospital. He retired from Eastern Long Island Hospital, in Greenport N.Y. A resident of New Milford for 34 years, he was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford, and served on many committees. For many years Mr. Landgrebe was active in the Republican Party. He was dedicated to contributing to his community and faithfully served as a member of the New Milford Financial Planning Committee, an alternate on the Board of Finance and the Zoning Board of Appeals. An enthusiastic member of the Senior Center in New Milford, he shared his love of woodworking by starting a wood carving group for seniors. He dearly loved spending time with family and friends, his dogs Bailey and Scotty, rooting for his favorite team The NY Jets, playing Mah Jong, and touring New Milford on the Senior Bus. He is survived by his loving wife Sheila (Cassidy) of over 50 years, his devoted children, son Martin, daughters Virginia Landgrebe and Rachel Tuleja, her husband Michael, all of New Milford, and a brother Albert Landgrebe of Sarasota, Florida. Mr. Landgrebe was known for his sharp intellect, his conservative fiscal views, his love of a good story, and a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by the family he cherished and remembered with fondness by friends and the countless members of the community whose lives he touched. Lisa is 25 years old and a Pharmacist at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. This past Wednesday, while attending a Staff meeting at the Hospital, Lisa collapsed and went into Cardiac Arrest. It was a miracle that Lisa was where she was. They performed CPR on her and got her into ICU immediately where they restored her heart beat. Owen tells us that Lisa is getting better each day but Lisa needs our prayers. The MDs have not found the cause of the Cardiac Arrest.
