I agree. "who cares!" about any of these sports millionaires?

We have War, Abortion, Debt, Deficit, and Crony Capitalism galore.

I care far more about the young women and men killed, maimed, and scared with PTSD for life. Suicides off the charts.

Who cares about a little cheating or immorality?

Actually, I care because this is symptom of the larger problems.

And, when do we address ANY problems?

Everything gets "kicked down the road".

Where does it end?

Here and now!

Lecture to explore role of women as heroic actors
Thursday, February 21, 2013

As part of Women's History Month, Penn State Altoona will present a lecture by Lorraine Dowler, associate professor of geography and women’s studies at Penn State University Park, titled “Militarized Bodies: Understanding Women as Heroic Actors.” The lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20 in the Fireside Lounge of the Slep Student Center.

Dowler's talk explores the everyday lives of a few groups of women who represent the many unsung actors who have not only served their nation but have also transgressed the boundaries of appropriate female behavior in order to do so. Although there are countless numbers of women who by their respective occupations have served the nation, I draw attention to three groups: women who trained to be astronauts at the height of the Cold War, contemporary women urban firefighters and U.S. servicewomen returning from the frontlines of Afghanistan and Iraq. Although each group’s experiences is unique, all share the experience of being discounted as women and of having to fight against normative codes that excluded their full counting as heroic actors. These shared experiences of exclusion and resistance are the focus here as I examine the overlapping strategies from federal to state to municipal governments for discounting their contributions.

Dowler received her B.S. in Business Administration from Manhattan College and a Masters of Landscape Architecture from SUNY-ESF, Syracuse University, where she also received her PhD in Geography.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Pizza and other refreshments will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Penn State Altoona Women's Studies program. For more information, contact Molly Slep at mys6@psu.edu.

JEMAIL: McEneney, Mike (MC1953) cites "The Future of Catholic Higher Education"

John Richard Wilcox '56:
The Future of Catholic Education

John Richard Wilcox '56 Ph.D.

We congratulate John Richard Wilcox, Ph.D. '56 on the recent publication of The Future of Catholic Higher Education. Dr. Wilcox is the principal author of the book, with Dr. Jennifer Lindholm of UCLA and Dr. Suzanne Dale Wilcox, spiritual director.

The book addresses the challenge currently facing Catholic higher education, that of keeping the mission alive and the essential charism functioning as the number of religious women and men declines.

At the present time, Catholic institutions are staffed by lay people of every conceivable religious denomination. Says Dr. Wilcox, "It is our conviction that a mission group of committed people, living a spiritual life and gathered in community, can provide the necessary continuity."

Dr. Wilcox lays out the richness of the Catholic intellectual tradition and the practicality of relying on the charism of the founding order: Jesuit, Benedictine, Dominican, Mercy, Lasallian, Sacred Heart. Dr. Lindholm surveys the research on student spirituality. Dr. Wilcox explains that in the aforementioned religious orders, lay communities are in fact continuing the mission of the religious order and guarding the religious community's charism through networks made up of different walks and religious backgrounds.

Says Dr. Wilcox, "In Catholic educational institutions if there is something that is appealing to non- Catholics and non-Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists, they understand very well that the school will lose its value-added dimension without the presence of the Catholic charism, which represents a certain way of doing things. It is in the air. It is a culture. Within that culture children do better academically and develop a good self image. " Keep Reading

Dr. Suzanne Wilcox (John's wife), in her chapter "Wayfaring at the University: Adult Spirituality," makes use of a Buddhist tale to trace the spiritual journey.

Dr. Suzanne Wilcox relates, "The tale is used to illustrate that we each travel a unique path to God, and that we make our way to peace within surrounded by community. It is worth reflecting on the essentially non-institutional search which is the spiritual path. Liturgy, church attendance and priestly leadership is important as an aid, but not always essential."

Dr. Wilcox has just retired after thirty-eight years of service at Manhattan College - as professor of Religious Studies, Director of Lasallian Studies, Director of the Center for Business and Professional Ethics and Vice President for Mission - over the years.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) has some requests

Good Evening All,

My apologies to all of you. Tom Delaney had sent me a prayer request that got by me until today and this weekend included a celebration for our Fellow Jasper, Bob Gregory ' 72. We have had Bob in our prayers since last february, 2012, as he battles Terminal Brain Cancer. Bob has been upbeat throughtout his ordeal through a strong and steadfast Faith and Trust in God. He has recently received some bad news. His treatments are no longer working and the Doctors see no alternative at this time. Bob remains as upbeat as possible. He and his family need our continued prayers. This weekend, St. Helena's High School (now Monsignor Scanlon) in the Bronx, is moving up his Hall of Fame recognition. If you know Bob from Manhattan College or St. Helena's and would like to attend, please call Tom Delaney, (917) 716 - 9025. Please keep this good man and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. Thank you. God Bless.

Good Evening All,

We have a special prayer request for Lisa Semancik, Niece of Owen and Marie Mckeon. Lisa is 25 years old and a Pharmacist at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. This past Wednesday, while attending a Staff meeting at the Hospital, Lisa collapsed and went into Cardiac Arrest. It was a miracle that Lisa was where she was. They performed CPR on her and got her into ICU immediately where they restored her heart beat. Owen tells us that Lisa is getting better each day but Lisa needs our prayers. The MDs have not found the cause of the Cardiac Arrest. Please keep the volume up for Lisa, Owen and Marie and their family as we pray that the cause is found and repaired for a complete recovery. Lisa's family thank you for your prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: The answer to "Gun Control", aka “Victim disarmament", peaceful non-violent non-cooperation

http://lewrockwell.com/rogers/rogers255.html

Gun Control and Japan

by Mike (in Tokyo) Rogers

*** begin quote ***

When it comes to gun control in the USA the logic of the progressives works in a very curious way. They often like to cherry pick nations from around the world to compare with the USA. One of their favorite nations to use as a comparison is Japan.

The argument goes like this; "Gun crimes are out of control in the United States! In America, over eleven thousand people are killed with guns every year! Japan has strict gun control laws and only a handful of people are killed with guns annually. Therefore Japan proves that gun control works. The United States should have gun control laws like Japan!"

*** and ***

I think it must be pretty obvious to anyone who thinks about it when talking about gun control and crimes (or even universal health care) comparing the United States to Japan is like comparing a steak barbeque to a slice of fish.

Men may be from Mars, and women are from Venus, but never forget that the Japanese are most definitely from Japan… Americans are from who-knows-where and that's why they are hard to compare.

And that’s just the way it is.

*** end quote ***

As the current Administration prepares to attempt de facto gun confiscation, Patriots, the sheepdogs mixed in with the Sheeple, have to remember the progression -- restrictions, registration, confiscation, genocide!

Sorry, but it happens!

The best think that can happen is that the New Yorkers, like the Canadians did, is just to refuse to cooperate.

That's how we got rid of Prohibition.

So, "no victim; no crime", nullification by non-cooperation.

"Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate." --- movie Gandhi (1983)
